Compare real time processing solutions Introduction/context At DAT.Mobility we’re responsible for processing large amounts of (near)real time data in order to use it in real time dashboards (monitoring) or to use it in creating prognoses. The data is mainly traffic measurements from loop detectors and VRI (junction measuring instruments). This data flow is growing and growing (as well inside the Netherlands as abroad). At this moment we’re using custom made software and some configurable software to process the data, but nowadays there is a lot of (open source) software that can do the same.
The challenge This assignment consists of 3 parts: 1) investigate the possible open source solutions on the internet 2) create a comparison method to select the best solution 3) install & test the top 2 solutions found
Ad 1) open source solutions on the internet In a brief, time boxed period you’ll look for possible solutions and you’ll have to document the major advantages of each solution (according what’s said on the websites)
Ad 2) create comparison method The output of this phase will be a method to compare different solutions and a ranking of the solutions according the comparison method. You’ll have to select a range of dimensions (e.g. scalability, easy to use, performance, etc.) and define the scales of each to make it less subjective. The selection of dimensions must fit with our needs. At last, when the selection of dimensions is agreed, we’ll have a look at the solutions of phase 1. You’ll have to compare these solutions with your method and you’ll create a ranking. So we’ll get a ordered list of the solutions that should fit our needs.
Ad 3) install and test Hands on! Install the top 2 solutions and find out which solutions is the easiest to install, run and maintain.
