Goulburn is perfectly positioned only 2 hours from Sydney, under 1 hour from Canberra and just over 1.5 hours to the coast by car.

Express coaches depart Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra daily. Sydney Trains and NSW Trainlink services both stop at Goulburn, Tarago and Marulan daily.

Heritage Discover the past

Uncover the captivating history of the region, where a wealth of museums, charming homesteads, and exquisite heritage architecture await your exploration. The region has been home to Aboriginal people for at least 21,000 years and has a rich and significant Indigenous heritage. Fast forward to 1818, explorers Hume and Meehan ventured across the land that would later become Goulburn. On 14 March 1863, 45 years later, Goulburn was declared Australia’s first inland city by royal letters patent, issued by Queen Victoria. Goulburn flourished on the grounds of a prosperous wool industry, laying the foundation for robust agricultural roots. The city’s ascent continued with the cathedrals, a fleeting yet impactful gold rush, and the evolution of a rail system, all contributing to Goulburn’s remarkable growth. Today, the majestic historic buildings and residences that grace the cityscape bear testimony to Goulburn’s opulent past, showcasing its affluence during the vibrant 19th century.

Marulan proudly claims the title of the only town in the world situated precisely on the 150th meridian, serving as the basis for Australian Eastern Standard Time.

The vibrant township is steeped in history, boasting charming historic buildings dating back to the 19th century. More recently, Marulan has experienced significant growth with the addition of a range of new amenities.

A visit to Marulan wouldn’t be complete without a self-guided heritage tour. Take the time to explore the boutique shops or enjoy the local hospitality at one of the eateries dotted along the way.

Bungonia

The historic village of Bungonia is the gateway to the breathtaking Bungonia National Park, renowned for some of the deepest cave systems on the Australian mainland, beautiful views from accessible lookouts, and walking tracks suitable for all levels of fitness.

Established in the early 1820s, the village of Bungonia holds a storied past and thrives today with a lively community. Explore its well-maintained historical buildings from the street, now complemented by interpretive signage. Time your visit right to partake in one of the many village events arranged by the active Progress Association and Historical Society.

Situated along the Windellama Creek, this village is home to a thriving rural community. Experience Windellama at its finest with monthly markets organised by the Progress Association or explore history at the museum within a replica 1880s school building, courtesy of the Windellama Historical Society.

Situated at the crossroads of coastal and tablelands biological zones, discover the myriad of unique flora and fauna species thriving in this diverse ecosystem. With its scenic rural setting, Windellama has deep agricultural ties and has recently emerged as a sought-after destination for those seeking a tree change.

Lake Bathurst

The Towrang community is a vibrant mixture of established residents and treechange newcomers who all agree that it is ‘the best place to live’.

Historically, Towrang was a major penal establishment which drove the construction of the Great South Road by chainbound convicts. Many of the remarkable constructions of the Towrang Stockade are still in place today.

Also known for its stunning natural beauty, the Wollondilly River meanders through the Towrang Valley, attracting a variety of bird life.

A tiny but charming tree-lined village, the locality of Lake Bathurst is home to some remarkable 19th century historic buildings. More recently, the village has become home to a small selection of farm stays and self-contained accommodation options.

The lake, now encircled by private property, spans a shallow area fluctuating between two and ten square kilometres. As a cherished wetland sanctuary for wading birds, it offers visitors the chance to witness vast flocks traversing between the coast and inland landscapes at various times of the year.

Tallong – home of the famous Big Apple and the rare Tallong Midge Orchid – is surrounded by breathtaking scenery, offering an array of highlights for visitors. Stunning views of the Shoalhaven Gorge and River can be seen from Long Point and Badgery’s Lookouts on the outskirts of the village.

Tallong Memorial Park, in the village centre, showcases the iconic Big Apple, the scenic Jim Watling Walkway, and an enticing sculpture walk within a serene nature reserve. A skate park, half basketball court and murals have recently been added with further additions to come.

Mark your calendar for the first Sunday in May and join us for the annual Tallong Apple Day Festival – a celebration honouring the village’s rich apple orchard heritage.

Tarago

Towrang Tallong

The rustic farming village of Tarago lies in a valley through which the Mulwaree Chain of Ponds flows towards Goulburn.

The major industry in the area was the Woodlawn Mine which operated for approx. 20 years, producing lead, copper and zinc. It has since been transformed into the Woodlawn Bioreactor which uses the latest technology to treat and dispose of waste material transported via rail from Sydney.

Tarago is home to the Loaded Dog Hotel, founded in 1848 and an important part of Australia’s heritage. It was the meeting place and ‘safe house’ for many bushrangers including the notorious Frank Gardiner and Ben Hall.

The village has recently seen the addition of a new cluster of small shops and upgrades to the community recreation area.
