HERITAGE STEP BACK IN TIME
MUST DO
DISCOVER FASCINATING STORIES OF OUR ECLECTIC HISTORY THROUGH THE ABUNDANT MUSEUMS, HOMESTEADS AND STUNNING HERITAGE ARCHITECTURE DOTTED AROUND GOULBURN.
The region was traditionally a meeting place for many Aboriginal groups, in 1818 Hume and Meehan first crossed the area where Goulburn was settled. On the 14th of March in 1863, 45 years later, Queen Victoria declared Goulburn as Australia’s first inland city. Goulburn grew strong agricultural roots from the profitable wool industry. The cathedrals, a shortlived gold rush in the region and the development of the rail system further benefited the city’s development. Grand historic buildings and homes that stand today illustrate perfectly how Goulburn was a very wealthy city during the 19th century. Take a bell tower tour at St Saviour’s Cathedral, one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in
• Visit Sts Peter and Paul’s Old Cathedral for one of their many concerts and performances to experience the impressive sounds of the Hill and Son Organ installed in 1890. • Explore more of Goulburn’s heritage by stopping to read the historical signs and plaques throughout the city and villages. They commemorate historically important sites such as the First Motorcycle Grand Prix, Market Street and the Lieder Theatre in Goulburn as well as several in the villages of Marulan and Bungonia.

GOULBURN HISTORIC WATERWORKS Built 1883-1885, this facility and museum demonstrates the culmination of steam power technology in the late 1800s and the importance of public water utilities in that era. The building itself is a fine example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture, and alongside the original machinery, is in excellent condition - illustrating the original steam driven process of water supply. Containing the only steam beam engine in Australia made in 1883 by the Appleby Bros of London - still in its original location and operational. Additionally, the 1866 Hicks Hargreaves Corliss valve engine (though not original to the site) is important in its own right as the oldest engine of its type in the world. The museum is a highly significant collection of engineering artefacts for Australia, enhanced greatly by the bulk of the collection being located in its original site and remaining functional.
These magnificent engines can be viewed “under steam” throughout the year. Home of the annual Steampunk Victoriana Fair. Melding the classical Victorian era with industrial progress and all things powered by steam. The Steampunk and Victoriana Fair will see music, markets, inspired activities, and characters wandering the grounds - complementing the Goulburn Historic Waterworks architecture and aesthetic. Come along to revel in the unique facility and its history, and envisage the old-world technology put to use in the future. OPEN:

ST SAVIOUR’S CATHEDRAL St Saviour’s Anglican Cathedral is not only a magnificent example of Decorated Gothic architecture and a serenely beautiful place of worship - it’s also the reason why Goulburn in 2013 celebrated its 150th birthday as Australia’s first inland city. Royal Letters Patent granted by Queen Victoria on March 14 1863, established the Goulburn Diocese. As it thus became the official seat of the first Bishop, Mesac Thomas, the by then thriving country town gained city status.
completed in 1884 and took 10 years to build around the original (1839) St Saviour’s church, whose bricks form the cathedral floor. St Saviour’s is the most richly decorated of any Australian church. LEGEND CARS Legend Cars are somewhat of a contradiction. Outside, you see a stylish, retro look, making these machines an absolute head-turner for both kids and adults. But under those likeable curves lies quality engineering that packs a punch from the chassis to suspension and of course the engine. Legend Cars look cute. They drive mean. Based on 1930s and 40s US Hot Rods, Legend Cars are racing around the world from the USA to South Africa. Legend Cars are now considered the fastest growing motorsport category in Australia. This is no surprise due to their affordability, versatility and overall appeal.
Racing on both dirt and asphalt, the Legend Car can be adapted to either surface (in just 2 hours), making this category extremely flexible and offering drivers the ‘full’ racing experience. Legend Cars are for everyone, perfect for both a serious racer or anyone who just wants the excitement of racing or to have some fun. There is nowhere else in Australia where you can experience these incredible machines.

BUNGONIA NATIONAL PARK
ADVENTURE
NATURE, SPORT AND LEISURE
MUST DO
EXPLORE UNSPOILT BUSHLAND, TAKE SOME TIME TO TEE OFF OR WET A LINE, GET YOUR HEART PUMPING ALONG A TRACK OR WITH TRAMPOLINES.
Take in the sweeping views of the Shoalhaven River and natural bushland at Morton National Park from Long Point and Badgery’s Lookouts at Tallong, or Bungonia National Park along the network of bushwalks. Closer to the city the historic Goulburn Golf Club (1898) where you can tee off to relax, or take the short walk to any of the parks and recreation spaces within the city. For the kids (and young at heart), burn and bounce off pent up energy at Jump Inn trampoline centre, or practise some kicks and tricks at Goulburn’s Skate and BMX Parks.
• Camp under the vast night sky - unpolluted by big city lights and see the stars like never before. • Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor ‘treasure’ hunting game that uses GPS-enabled devices. It’s a fun, family-friendly activity that is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, learn about your surroundings and revel in the thrill of the hunt. Pick up the Beginners Guide to Geocaching in Goulburn to get started!

MEANDER TOWNS AND VILLAGES
BUNGONIA was settled in the early 1820s, with the
Bungonia caves systems being discovered in 1829. This village is the gateway to the Bungonia National Park, celebrated for its beautiful views with effortlessly accessible lookouts and walking tracks to cater for all fitness levels.
WINDELLAMA is a thriving rural community with an active progress association that hosts monthly markets, and an historical society which operates a small museum housed in a replica building of the 1880s school. The original settlement of TALLONG was renamed in the early twentieth century after an Aboriginal word meaning “spring of water”. Highlights for visitors include the stunning views of Morton National Park especially the Shoalhaven Gorge and River as seen from Long Point
and Badgery’s Lookouts. The district’s early development owes a lot to the hard labour of convicts, with some of their constructions still surviving today.
TOWRANG was a major penal establishment which
drove the construction of the Great South Road by chain-bound convicts. Many of the remarkable constructions can be still accessed today, with a self-guided Towrang Stockade brochure available from the Goulburn Visitor Information Centre.
Situated south of Goulburn, along Tourist Drive 8, LAKE BATHURST is an attractive tree-lined village with significant 19th century buildings that remain in good condition today. Just down the road is TARAGO , home of the Loaded Dog Hotel, established in 1848. It was a meeting place and safe house for many bushrangers and much of its original stone, brick and wood of the era remain. Nearby is the old Woodlawn mine, which is given life to today as a bioreactor. Tours of the Woodlawn Bioreactor, Lake Bathurst, the Village’s Museum and WWII Fuel Stores can be arranged via the Goulburn Visitor Information Centre.
WINDELLAMA SMALL FARMS FIELD DAY Windellama Small Farms Field Day is an opportunity for small farm owners to learn about the practices of rural living. As well as to help people understand what is required to set up and maintain their properties, and where to find the many supplies they will need along the way. Heavy machinery and tools are well represented, covering the spectrum of rural requirements from tractors, trailers and farm machinery, sheds, chainsaws and bikes. Among the market stalls, visitors will have the opportunity to see, taste and purchase a range of local and specialist products. Visit the website to find out more and the date for the Small Farms Field day this year.

MARULAN Marulan is the only town in the world which is situated on the 150th meridian which is used as the basis for Australian Eastern Standard Time; a sculpture depicting this interesting fact is located in the town centre. Marulan features historic buildings dating back to the 19th century with the township steeped in history from stories like that of bushrangers holding up traffic travelling north to Sydney from the southern goldfields. A self-guided tour of historic Marulan is also available.
