Lockheed Martin F 35C Reports to the Navy June 24, 2013 FORT WORTH, Texas – The first Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] F 35C Lightning II Navy carrier variant (CV) aircraft, CF 6, arrived at Strike Fighter Squadron 101 located at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., on Saturday. The jet is the Navy’s first 5th generation F 35 production aircraft. Strike Fighter Squadron 101 will serve as the F 35C Fleet Replacement Squadron, training both pilots and maintainers. CF 6 will join a fleet of 12 F 35A conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) jets and 13 F 35B short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) jets already assigned to Eglin. Later this year, four additional CVs will join the fleet. U.S. Navy test pilot Lt. Cmdr. Chris Tabert flew CF 6 on its ferry flight. Last year, he became the first military test pilot to fly all variants of the F 35. “We are committed to the Navy’s vision for the F 35 that will revolutionize forward based combat power in current and future threat environments,” said Lorraine Martin, Lockheed Martin executive vice president and F 35 program general manager. “The F 35 represents the new standard in weapon systems integration, maintainability, combat radius and payload that brings true multi mission capability to the Navy.” The F 35C, the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps' CV, has larger wings and more robust landing gear than the other F 35 variants. The CV has the greatest internal fuel, at 19,624 pounds, making it suitable for catapult launches and fly in arrestments aboard naval aircraft carriers. Its wingtips fold to allow for capacity and, like the F 35B, the C variant uses probe and drogue refueling. The F 35 Lightning II is a 5th generation fighter, combining advanced stealth with fighter speed and agility, fully fused sensor information, network enabled operations and advanced sustainment. Three distinct variants of the F 35 will replace the A 10 and F 16 for the U.S. Air Force, the F/A 18 for the U.S. Navy, the F/A 18 and AV 8B Harrier for the U.S. Marine Corps, and a variety of fighters for at least 10 other countries. The U.S. Navy plans to declare Initial Operational Capability with the CV in 2019.

Navy Mulls Another Hangar Bay At Tinker June 25, 2013 TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. The U.S. Navy is conducting "market research" to identify potential contractors capable of constructing a new maintenance hangar bay for naval aircraft stationed at Tinker. The Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Midwest, issued a "sources sought" document last month to assess interest from companies that might be interested in building another E 6B hangar at the Navy's TACAMO area on the south side of base. NAVFAC is seeking either "individual firms or joint venture firms" capable of constructing the proposed facility, which would cost an estimated $10 million to $15 million. The proposed procurement is being considered as a set aside for a Section 8(a) small business, HUBZone, Service Disabled Veteran Owned or Women Owned small business. A questionnaire that will be the basis for the government's decision whether to green light the project as a small business set aside acquisition was to be submitted to NAVFAC Midwest's Public Works Department in Great Lakes, Ill., by June 17. The bid build project would entail construction of a modified high bay hangar that would house shop space, flight line operations, maintenance functions, and space in support of 60 maintenance personnel of Strategic Communications Wing ONE's E 6B aircraft squadron. Built in equipment would include a nine ton overhead bridge crane and a fold up aircraft hangar door, and supporting facilities would include parking area for aerospace ground equipment. The E 6B is 150 feet long, 42Â˝ feet high, and has a 150 foot wingspan. Construction of a fifth bay has been proposed to "support our depot maintenance efforts for the E 6 aircraft," said Lt. Cdr. Bruce Bronk, SCW 1 deputy for logistics.

Ellsworth Teams Up With Area Agencies to Build UCAS July 3, 2013 ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. The vision of building a realistic training site for aircrews and ground controllers has become a reality after base Airmen teamed up with area Soldiers and agencies to complete construction at a location near Belle Fourche, S.D. Ellsworth partnered with the South Dakota National Guard, South Dakota Ellsworth Development Authority and a handful of other agencies to plan and construct the urban close air support site, with a large portion of the work accomplished June 9 to 20 as part of Golden Coyote activities. "We developed this site because it will provide a valuable service to both of our branches and it will save us money," said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Craig Johnson, SDNG assistant adjutant general and commander of the troops. "It will also provide Airmen and Soldiers the training they need to prepare for real world contingencies." Lt. Col. Brian Farmer, 28th Operations Support Squadron commander who has flown the B 1 bomber since May 2003, said the UCAS will provide a realistic playing field where Ellsworth B 1 aircrews and ground controllers can hone the skills used routinely in areas like Afghanistan training that is crucial to the readiness and proficiency of base Airmen. "This training will enhance the capabilities of B 1 aircrews and ground units as they fine tune their close air support skills in kinetic strike and nontraditional intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance platforms," said Farmer, who has flown more than 100 B 1 combat missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. "The bottom line is it will help us train the way we fight."

Raytheon Awarded $80.5 Million for Joint Standoff Weapon C 1 Variant provides enhanced capability to warfighter July 10, 2013 TUCSON, Ariz., Raytheon Company received an $80.5 million production contract award from the U.S. Navy to procure Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) C 1's. The contract was awarded in Raytheon's second quarter of 2013. "JSOW C 1 enables the warfighter to precisely engage targets well beyond most enemy air defenses, thus limiting the threat of adversarial forces," said Celeste Mohr, JSOW program director for Raytheon Missile Systems. "JSOW is exceptionally dependable and provides immeasurable value to the warfighter." The JSOW C 1 adds a weapon datalink radio and modified seeker software to the existing JSOW C, which increases the anti surface warfare mission capability. The weapon is designed to provide fleet forces with the capability and flexibility to engage moving maritime targets, while retaining its robust capability against stationary land targets. "With more than 400 JSOW A's employed in combat, this weapon has stood the tests of time," said Harry Schulte, vice president of Air Warfare Systems for Raytheon Missile Systems. "Furthermore, the JSOW program has sustained on time deliveries for 11 years while concurrently maintaining costs. The JSOW has a remarkable record of reliability, resourcefulness and accuracy." Work on the contract will be performed in Tucson, Ariz.; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; McAlester, Okla.; and Dallas, Texas. Delivery of the missiles is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2014.

About the Joint Standoff Weapon JSOW is a family of low cost, air to ground weapons that employs an integrated GPS inertial navigation system and terminal imaging infrared seeker. JSOW C 1 adds the two way Strike Common Weapon Datalink to the combat proven weapon, enabling a moving maritime target capability. JSOW C 1 will provide an advanced anti surface warfare solution on the F/A 18 Super Hornet aircraft.

BAE to Develop Naval Canisters for US Navy July 5, 2013 BAE Systems has been awarded a contract by the US Navy to develop canisters capable of storing, transporting and launching a wide range of missiles. Under the $40m firm fixed price contract, BAE will deliver different canisters, including the Mk14 Mod 2 for Tomahawk long range, all weather, subsonic cruise missiles and Mk21 Mod 2 for standard missile 3 (SM 3) missile systems. The company will also provide Mk21 Mod 3 canisters for SM 6 missiles, as well as Mk25 Mod 0 units for the evolved SeaSparrow missile (ESSM), a medium range, high speed, all weather, all aspect, semi active guided missile. In addition, BAE will provide ancillary hardware and associated support equipment, as part of the contract, which also has options for additional annual contract awards. BAE Systems Weapon Systems vice president and general manager Chris Hughes said: "BAE Systems has a long standing canister production franchise built on delivering world class canisters to the US Navy, helping our sailors accomplish their missions more safely and effectively." If all options are exercised, the contract will have a period of performance from 2013 through to 2019 and is expected to be valued at $400m, while Naval Sea Systems Command Washington will serve as the contracting activity. Scheduled to be complete by July 2015, work under the contract will be carried out in South Dakota and Minneapolis, Minnesota. Designed to serve as missile shipping and storage containers, the canisters will be used as a launch platform for specific missiles and provide rocket motor exhaust gas containment and launch rail during missile firing. The canisters are currently used in the US Navy's Mk41 and Mk57 vertical launching systems (VLS), designed to launch missiles at strike multiple naval warfare threats such as anti air, anti submarine, ship self defense, land attack and ballistic missile defense missions.

GPS System Improved as New Boeing Satellite Enters Service GPS IIF delivers better position, navigation and timing data July 9, 2013 EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – The Global Positioning System, which millions of people use every day for precise navigation and timing, recently became more accurate and reliable as the fourth Boeing [NYSE: BA] GPS IIF satellite began operating in the U.S. Air Force network. Launched May 15, that satellite was handed over to the Air Force after 19 days of post launch validation to stabilize the vehicle and activate the navigation payload, and set healthy on June 21. “With each IIF that we add to the network, the Air Force and Boeing give military and civilian users around the world better GPS navigation and timing information,” said Craig Cooning, Boeing vice president and general manager of Space & Intelligence Systems. SVN 66, the official name of the new satellite, is now part of the active 31 satellite network. The next GPS IIF, the fifth of 12 planned, is slated for launch in October. The new satellite replaces an earlier Boeing built model launched in 1996. Air Force Global Hawk Team, Northrop Grumman Led Global Hawk Industry Team Win Roche Sustainment Award July 11, 2013 SAN DIEGO â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The U.S. Air Force RQ 4 Global Hawk unmanned aircraft program was officially awarded the 2012 Dr. James G. Roche Sustainment Excellence Award during a ceremony June 7 at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) is the prime contractor for the high flying fleet of Global Hawks. Presented by Gen. Mark A. Welsh III, Air Force chief of staff, the Global Hawk team received the coveted award for demonstrating superior improved performance in aircraft maintenance and logistics readiness from October 2011 through September 2012. "During this period, the Global Hawk has made significant improvements in aircraft availability, mission capability and total nonmission capability for maintenance and supply in support of worldwide operations," said Welsh. "In addition, the team simultaneously fielded an additional seven Global Hawks and implemented two key reliability and maintainability initiatives that have made significant impacts. This would not have been possible without the hard work, professionalism and commitment of the men and women of the Global Hawk program." The Global Hawk has been in high demand with warfighters, flying more than 13,400 hours last year and approximately 94,000 total flight hours to date. The Global Hawk's mission capable rate rose from approximately 52 percent in fiscal year 2011 to nearly 78 percent in 2012, and has now exceeded the Air Force's goal for 24 consecutive months. Air Force officials determined the award winner by calculating the improvements for a predetermined set of metrics and multiplying each metric by a corresponding weighted value.

Reaper Engine Work Coming To Tinker July 11, 2013 Tinker AFB will have a key role in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of U.S. Air Force MQ 9 Reaper engines. The Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex will service the Reaper's Honeywell TPE331 10GD turboprop engine. Tinker civilian employees perform depot maintenance on B 52 and B 1B bombers, E 3 Sentry AWACS aircraft, KC 135 tankers, and a variety of fighter, bomber, AWACS and tanker jet engines. General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc., of Poway, Calif., has been awarded an $18.25 million firm fixed price contract for MQ 1 and MQ 9 organic depot stand up repair capability, which will be performed at Hill AFB, Utah, and Robins AFB, Ga., as well as Tinker AFB. The contract will be managed by the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center at Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio. A total of 404 Reaper remotely piloted aircraft are expected to be produced/maintained, according to the 88th Air Base Wing Public Affairs Office at Wright Patterson. The MRO engine depot stand up will be accomplished in stages. Initial set up of the workload will be performed by the original equipment manufacturer under a public/private partnership agreement. The workload transfer is scheduled to be completed by 2016. Honeywell will train Tinker mechanics in the proper maintenance of the Reaper engine. Maintenance of the drone's airframe "is not currently projected for Tinker AFB," 88th ABW/PA added. The contract was awarded at a time when the U.S. is drawing down its forces in Afghanistan and reassigning or bringing home hundreds of General Atomics MQ 1B Predator and larger MQ 9 Reaper unmanned aircraft systems.

Lockheed Martin Delivers 100th Targeting System for F 35 July 12, 2013 Orlando, Fla. – Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] recently delivered the 100th Electro Optical Targeting System (EOTS) for the F 35 Lightning II. EOTS provides affordable, high performance multifunction targeting to the F 35’s full spectrum of military operations. EOTS is the first sensor that combines forward looking infrared and infrared search and track functionality to provide F 35 pilots with situational awareness and air to air and air to surface targeting from a safe distance. This technology allows aircrews to identify areas of interest, perform reconnaissance and precisely deliver laser and GPS guided weapons. “F 35 pilots can use the imagery to determine exactly where to strike while staying out of harm’s way,” said Ken Fuhr, director of fixed wing programs at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. “Delivering our 100th F 35 EOTS is one step closer to ensuring all F 35 pilots can perform their missions and return home safely.” Lockheed Martin is currently producing EOTS under the seventh low rate initial production contract. Planned production quantities for the F 35 exceed 3,000 aircraft with deliveries through 2030. Key components of EOTS are manufactured at the company’s Ocala, Fla., and Santa Barbara, Calif., facilities. In addition to EOTS, Lockheed Martin also manufactures the low observable window for the aircraft at the company’s Orlando, Fla., facility. MSAS Air Advisors Take BPC Mission to Guatemala for First Time July 14, 2013 TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. The 571st Mobility Support Advisory Squadron concluded its first building partnership capacity mission in Guatemala, May 5 through June 14, 2013. Fifteen air advisors deployed to La Aurora Air Base, Guatemala City, Guatemala, for 41 consecutive days to exchange ideas with the Guatemalan Air Force in different areas of operational mobility. The MSAS mobile training team exchanged ideas with 81 partner nation personnel in the areas of aircraft maintenance, airbase defense, civil engineering, communications, command and control, fuels, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, logistics and vehicle maintenance using a variety of hands on activities to advance AFSOUTH defined command and control, ISR, operational mobility lines of effort. This was the first MSAS BPC mission in Guatemala in direct support of Southern Command's Counter Transnational Organized Crime mission. The event kicked off with an opening ceremony officiated by Col. Juan Carlos Aleman, La Aurora Air Base Wing vice commander, who welcomed the MSAS team. "We thank the MSAS for their support and partnership in helping us become a better air force," Aleman said. The MSAS team focused its training efforts across nine seminars to improve general safety and training programs to ultimately yield more effective use of the GAF's limited resources. Tech. Sgt. Mateo Escareno, 571th MSAS aircraft maintenance air advisor, worked closely with the GAF aircraft maintenance personnel on their grounded King Air B200. Escareno helped the Guatemalan maintainers resolve an engine control issue for the B200. Additionally, he identified critical parts for the emergency oxygen system and air conditioning system. Once these parts are installed on the King Air B200, it will be ready for an operational test flight in preparation for the SOUTHCOM installation of the Forward Looking Infrared system.

ITT Exelis Receives Contract for the Lockheed Martin Joint Air To Surface Standoff Missile July 15, 2013 SALT LAKE CITY ITT Exelis received a contract in excess of $10 million for Lot 10 production of composite missile bodies and structures for the baseline and extended range versions of Lockheed Martin’s Joint Air to Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM). Exelis will use its composite fabrication expertise in braiding, resin transfer mold and vacuum assisted resin transfer molding to produce the complex structures. The combination of these processes provides automated, low cost and high quality structural parts. Raytheon Company's 3rd Generation Forward Looking Infrared (3rd Gen FLIR) Improved Target Acquisition System (ITAS) and fire control successfully achieved proof of concept in a series of laboratory and field tests. Preliminary evaluation of the impact of firing all versions of the TOW missile was also performed. GE Aviation Selected for Air Force Adaptive Engine Technology Program Negotiations EVENDALE, Ohio The United States Air Force (USAF) has selected GE Aviation for negotiations to mature a suite of technologies to include variable cycle technology for the Adaptive Engine Technology Development (AETD) program. AETD will enable GE to address the USAF’s propulsion needs for improved fuel burn to provide combat aircraft in the beyond 2020 timeframe with significantly enhanced range, performance and thermal management capabilities. Development work will be conducted at GE Aviation’s headquarters in Evendale, Ohio. Once negotiations are complete and the contract is awarded, GE will share the costs of the program with the Air Force. The AETD contract maintains a competitive engine technology environment for future Air Force combat aircraft. During the six week long EUT, soldiers tested JLENS' ability to operate in a number of complex scenarios that replicated an operational environment. The soldiers also tested JLENS' endurance by operating the system continually for 20 days. U.S. Australia System Promotes Logistics Interoperability July 17, 2013 WASHINGTON â&#x20AC;&#x201C; A new logistics tracking system between the United States and Australia will help to ensure faster, more coordinated responses to humanitarian crises and other contingencies while laying the foundation for closer cooperation across the Asia Pacific region, the senior U.S. Pacific Command logistics director reported. Pacom, through its U.S. Army Pacific component, and the Australian defense force launched the Pacific Radio Frequency Identification System in April, Air Force Brig. Gen. Mark M. McLeod reported during a telephone interview from the command headquarters at Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii. The system incorporates technologies commercial retailers have come to rely on to track their goods from the manufacturer to warehouses and into buyersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; hands, McLeod explained. It also leverages capabilities NATO introduced about three years ago with the standup of a network exchange hub that promotes information sharing about supply shipments bound for the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. The NATO system uses radio frequency identification to automatically locate and track shipments through ISAF member supply chains. Nations connected to a routing hub in Luxembourg transmit logistics data to other users, giving the entire supply chain real time visibility on the shipments. The Pacific Radio Frequency Identification system introduces this capability into the Pacom theater to support rotational U.S. Marine Corps forces in Darwin, Australia, and expanded military to military cooperation across the region, McLeod said.

KC 46 Design Review Nearing Completion July 18, 2013 WASHINGTON The Air Force and Boeing successfully conducted the KC 46 Critical Design Review (CDR) from July 8 10 at the Boeing facility in Mukilteo, Wash. The KC 46 Weapon System CDR was the culmination of nine months of component and sub system design reviews, which blended the best practices of both the commercial and Department of Defense frameworks. Currently, the CDR still has a few actions to finish, but the process is scheduled to be complete well in advance of the Sept. 24 contractual date. "The efforts by the combined Boeing and Air Force team to get to this point in the program development have been tremendous", said Maj. Gen. John Thompson, program executive officer for tankers. "For the warfighter, completion of this milestone is a big step forward toward beginning the recapitalization of the Air Force's legacy KC 135 fleet, delivering advanced and improved multi mission capabilities to the fight on day one." Attendees at the meetings included the Government KC 46 Program Office, Boeing, Air Mobility Command, Air Force and Department of Defense test and acquisition leaders, and the Federal Aviation Administration. Thompson said that the overall design maturity of the tanker is at a high level, grounded in the commercial derivative nature of the design approach, which is based on the Boeing 767. Once the CDR is complete, Boeing will proceed into the fabrication, hardware & software integration, and test phase of the KC 46 development program. The Air Force contracted with Boeing in Feb 2011 to acquire 179 KC 46 Tankers to begin recapitalizing the more than 50 year old KC 135 fleet. The initial delivery target is for 18 tankers by 2017. Production will then ramp up to deliver all 179 tankers by 2028. The first fully equipped KC 46 is projected to fly in early 2015 in support of engineering and manufacturing development activities.

Rocketeers Return to the Sky July 18, 2013 SEYMOUR JOHNSON AFB, N.C. After being stood down for more than three months, the 336th Fighter Squadron was finally given the green light to resume flying hours and get back to combat mission ready (CMR) status, July 17. The decision comes from Congressional action on the $1.8 billion overseas contingency operations reprogramming action that made peacetime dollars available. In mid July, the Air Force Council approved the use of $208 million of those dollars to restore flying hours for affected units. Sixteen fighter, bomber and airborne warning and control system squadrons that had stopped or curtailed flying were selected to resume operations. "It was great to get the mighty yellow tails airborne again," said Lt. Col. James Howard, 336th FS commander. "The ground crews and the 75 folks in the squadron have been looking forward to this day since it started 100 days ago." On April 9, Air Combat Command announced that approximately one third of its units, including the 336th FS, would stop flying to ensure mission readiness of the remaining units that were supporting worldwide operations. The decision not only affected the pilots of the F 15E Strike Eagle, but also the maintenance crews assigned to work on the squadron's aircraft. "When we found out we were getting stood down, we kind of just had to roll with the punches," said Staff Sgt. Thomas Flannigan, 4th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron crew chief. "There's not much you can do about it. You've just got to keep a positive attitude and do whatever you can to help the mission." During the sequester mandated stand down, maintenance crews and pilots alike focused on training to help maintain their readiness. Airmen used a variety of resources, such as simulators, textbooks and computer based training to help retain their skill sets. According to Howard though, hands on experience is one of the most valuable tools these Airmen have. Because of the loss of skills from not being able to fly, it will take three to four months for the squadron to get back to full CMR status and be capable to deploy.

The evaluation of the TERREX 8x8, a wheeled armored, amphibious vehicle, designed and manufactured by ST Kinetics included a series of water performance demonstrations in various sea conditions and an evaluation of human factors and stowage capacity. New Civilian Pay System Beginning August July 18, 2013 ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. About 6,000 employees at Robins will migrate to a new time and attendance system Aug. 11. The units affected by the change consist of the 78th Air Base Wing, 461st Air Control Wing, Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, the 638th Supply Chain Management Group, 5th Combat Communications Group and the Air Force Sustainment Center Operating Locations. Air Force leadership committed to implementing the Automated Time, Attendance, and Production System, or ATAAPS, to standardize civilian time and attendance processes in mid 2012. During fiscal 2013, the Air Force began rolling out the system, with many sites adopting it ahead of schedule. According to officials, ATAAPS eliminates the antiquated, manual process, but there are other reasons to adopt it. "It allows folks to focus on the mission, and allows the Secretary of the Air Force and Chief of Staff of the Air Force to make informed decisions about where we need to spend our money," said Doug Bennett, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Financial Operations. Further, the transition helps standardize current processes critical to addressing civilian pay financial reporting risks identified by the Financial Improvement and Audit Readiness Team. Members of the military community affected by traumatic brain injuries and neurological disorders gathered with medical professionals to discuss resources, treatments and general advice in a forum hosted by the Exceptional Family Member Program at the Russell Marine and Family Center aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, July 10. Experts ranged from medical professionals to educators. Families struggling with traumatic brain injuries and neurological disorders provided insight into their experiences and experts shared facts, suggestions and their perspectives. The forum was casual, with participants speaking openly and receiving frank information from other families with similar experiences and from knowledgeable professionals. Neurological conditions and traumatic brain injuries can have mild to devastating effects on a person. Traumatic brain injuries have physical, cognitive and emotional symptoms, such as headaches, fatigue, poor concentration and mood swings, according to the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center. Neurological disorders include migraines, epilepsy and brain tumors among many other conditions. Hundreds of millions are affected by neurological disorders worldwide, according to a publication by the World Health Organization. Sgt. Andrew Fischer, a crew chief with 2nd Marine Divisionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2nd Tank Battalion, and his wife Samantha attended the event to meet other parents like them. Their son nearly drowned about a year ago and suffered severe injuries as a result. With their family far away, they wanted to expand their local support network. During the forum they learned of support groups, camps and organizations that can help provide knowledge and support to them and others in similar situations.

Ingalls Shipbuilding Delivers DDG 1001 Aft PVLS to U.S. Navy July 24, 2013 PASCAGOULA, Mississippi Huntington Ingalls Industries' (NYSE:HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division announced today it has delivered the final aft peripheral vertical launch system (PVLS) assemblies to the U.S. Navy for the Zumwalt class destroyer Michael Monsoor (DDG 1001). The two units for the PVLS were delivered a week early. "Our shipbuilders have done an outstanding job in incorporating lessons learned from the first aft PVLS products," said Ingalls DDG 1000 Program Manager Steve Sloan. "Delivering these products a week early demonstrates smart shipbuilding by using previous experiences to integrate an improved plan to do it better the second time around. With a constant focus on safety and quality, our shipbuilders have done outstanding work on these units." General Dynamics' Bath Iron Works is building the DDG 1001 hull, while Ingalls is building the PVLS assemblies in Pascagoula and the composite hangar and deckhouse at the company's composite center of excellence in Gulfport. The PVLS distributes the missile launchers for the destroyer in separate four cell launcher compartments along the ship's hull. It is an alternative to the traditional centralized missile magazines found on DDG 51 class ships. The PVLS launcher configuration was chosen to significantly enhance the ship's survivability. Four assembly units make up the aft PVLS. The first two units were delivered in July 2012. The rest of the DDG 1001 work is expected to be complete in the first quarter of 2014.
