A Practical Guide to Designing Your Executive Office Nov. 25, 2016
A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO DESIGNING YOUR EXECUTIVE OFFICE HOW TO FIND IF YOU NEED A RIGHT OR LEFT SIDE RETURN FOR YOUR EXECUTIVE DESK: Determining if your executive desk needs a right or left side return should not be based on whether you’re right or left handed. The most important factors to determine if your desk should have a right or left side return are (1) the posture of the desk in your office, (2) the location of the entry door in relation to the desk, (3) the location of electrical and electronic services in the room, (4) privacy and exposure of materials and video monitors to guests in the room, (5) locations of windows in the office, (6) where you want to place other furniture in your office such as sofas, coffee tables, and a meeting table. The single most important factor in determining the handing of your desk return is the posture of the desk in relation to the location of the office entry door. Most executives prefer their desk to be facing their office entry door for better visibility so that they can see who is entering their office, and to more easily summon assistance from employees outside their office. When the desk is positioned towards the entry door, you should then determine if the entry door will be biased towards the left side or right side of the desk or in the center straight in front of it while seated at the desk. Other factors that you may need to consider in determining the position of your desk and subsequently its handing are the location of: • Electrical outlets and other floor or wall connections in your office • Windows in your office • Other furniture including a credenza, a meeting table, and a sofa set in your office • Privacy and exposure of materials and video monitors to guests in your office. Mayo Clinic Discovers Protein Doubles Down on Cancer Oct. 5, 2016 ROCHESTER, Minn. — The human cell cycle, the normal process of replication by which cells divide, separate and become two, is also a juncture where many mistakes can happen. Most of those errors are automatically repaired by the safeguards in our DNA. But when that repair system breaks down, cancer can result from the resulting mutations. Now comes the discovery of how part of that protection system works. Mayo Clinic researchers have discovered that the protein that regulates the cell cycle — cyclin A2 — does double duty. In addition to its role as an RNA binding protein to coordinate DNA duplication during cell division, researchers have discovered that it also plays a role in establishing the machinery that fixes cancercausing DNA replication errors. The researchers’ article, which appears in the latest issue of Science, identifies cyclin A2 is a first example of a protein that binds to RNA to control the production of a single protein, Mre11, a key DNA repair protein. “Cyclins constitute a family of proteins that all living organisms possess to orchestrate ordered progression through the cell division cycle,” explains Jan van Deursen, Ph.D., senior author of the study. “Most family members were discovered 25-30 years ago and thought to uniquely function in the sequential activation of specific cyclin-dependent kinases at different stages of the cell cycle clock. Disruption or deregulation of the cell cycle is a common cause in the development of cancer, so researchers have been interested in understanding this process in the greatest detail in the hope to use this knowledge to develop new medicines to treat human cancers.” Investigation of cyclin A2’s functions in living organisms posed a unique technical hurdle for the team because of the crucial importance of this protein for survival of cells engaging in cell division. The normal approach for this kind of study would involve making genetically altered “knockout” mice with their cyclin A2 removed, so that the effects of this omission could be detected and linked to the protein’s function. But, in this case, because the function of the protein is essential for cell division, none of the mice survived; the “knockout” was lethal. This research, which involved 17 Mayo Clinic researchers from three departments, was supported by three grants from the National Institutes of Health: CA126828, CA168709 and CA166025. Intermountain Healthcare Pharmacy Services Working to Help Make Medications More Affordable for Patients Nov. 3rd, 2016 "Ensuring access to and affordability of healthcare services has always been and will always be a central focus of Intermountain Healthcare." With medication prices on the rise, people are often faced with the hard choice to fill or not fill their prescriptions. This decision is true for a lot of people that use EpiPens – in which the cost of the device recently skyrocketed from less than $100 to more than $600. As challenges to pay for medications become more and more common, Intermountain Healthcare Pharmacy Services has taken measures to help patients afford their medications. From hospital-assembled “epikits,” to readily available naloxone, to even a charity prescription program in which patients do not pay for their prescriptions, Intermountain Healthcare Pharmacy Services continues to look for ways to help patients live the healthiest lives possible. “Our prescription medication affordability measures align with our mission of helping people live the healthiest lives possible,” said Nannette Berensen, Assistant Vice President for Intermountain Healthcare Pharmacy Services. “A patient’s positive health outcome is often dependent upon their medication adherence. A patient should not have to risk their health because they cannot afford their medications, and Intermountain Healthcare Pharmacy Services is committed to finding innovative ways to address prescription medication affordability.” Some of the measures that Intermountain Healthcare Pharmacy Services has taken to bring down prescription medication costs include: Creation of epinephrine kits (which do the same job as an EpiPen) for use within Intermountain Healthcare. Creation of kits that contain naloxone (medication that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose) and implementation of a system wide naloxone collaborative practice agreement that allows pharmacists to dispense naloxone without a prescription from all Intermountain Healthcare Community Pharmacies so patients, family members or concerned citizens can easily and quickly purchase naloxone at an affordable price. Intermountain Healthcare Specialty Pharmacy works to bring down the overall medication costs – often eliminating patients’ copays on expensive medications. A Charity Prescription Program for Utahns where qualifying patients do not pay for their prescriptions and Intermountain Healthcare incurs the cost. The updated GPS/inertial navigation system will also comply with the Federal Aviation Administration's NextGen air traffic control requirements that aircraft flying at higher altitudes be equipped with Automatic Dependence Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) Out by January 2020. ADS-B Out transmits information about an aircraft's altitude, speed and location to ground stations and to other equipped aircraft in the vicinity. The modernized system is expected to be available for platform integration starting in 2018.
