Caremerge Launches its Care Coordination Platform with 16th Largest Assisted Living Provider BMA Management The Caremerge Solution Enables Compliance and Accountability with the Accountable Care January 8, 2014
CHICAGO, IL. - Caremerge, LLC announced today that it has launched its Care Coordination Platform with BMA Management, Ltd. – the largest provider of assisted living in Illinois and the 16th largest provider in the country. Topera Gets FDA 510(k) Approval for 3D Mapping System January 7, 2014
WASHINGTON DC - US-based medical device company Topera has announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted 510(k) approval for the company's third-generation 3D mapping system. Processing information in seconds, the 3D mapping system provides nearinstantaneous intra-procedural mapping and re-mapping capabilities. The system features a new colour-imaging module that will help in the identification of 'Rotors', an electrophysiologic phenomenon previously shown to sustain atrial fibrillation. Topera will exhibit the workstation at the 19th International AF Symposium in Orlando, from 9-11 January. The company has developed the 3D analysis and mapping system that will assist electrophysiologists in identifying the electrical source of complex cardiac arrhythmias. "We remain committed to building upon this platform to further aid EPs in diagnosing complex arrhythmias and allowing them to tailor therapies to deliver improved clinical outcomes for their patients." Topera CEO Edward Kerslake said: "We remain committed to building upon this platform to further aid electrophysiologists (EPs) in diagnosing complex arrhythmias and allowing them to tailor therapies to deliver improved clinical outcomes for their patients." The Topera 3D mapping system features RhythmView Workstation and the FIRMap diagnostic catheter. According to Topera, the 3D mapping system improves patient outcomes by enabling electrophysiologists to view a dynamic representation of the electrical activity of the heart, and helps support the diagnosis of and treatment planning for a variety of arrhythmias including atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, atrial tachycardia, and ventricular tachycardia. Topera claims that FIRMap is the first and only contact-mapping basket catheter cleared by the FDA for use in all cardiac chambers to assist in the diagnosis of complex arrhythmias.

NuVasive Launches ALIF Column Realignment Procedure in US December 28, 2013
SAN DIEGO, CA - Minimally disruptive surgical products manufacturer NuVasive has launched its ALIF ACR in the US, the device is an anterior column realignment procedure for anterior lumbar interbody fusion. It is focused on correcting the sagittal plane imbalance that results from advanced degeneration. The product gives surgeons a less invasive approach to achieve the same balance as with traditional techniques. The hyperlordotic implants developed for the ALIF ACR procedure are reportedly the company's latest innovative advancement in an effort to improve sagittal plane deformity correction. The ALIF ACR procedure is an alternative method of treating sagittal imbalance without requiring a posterior osteotomy represents a significant advancement in spinal deformity correction. Traditional ALIF implants offer only 8째 to 15째 of lordosis, however the implants developed for the ALIF ACR procedure offer a 20째 and 30째 hyperlordotic footprints and may improve sagittal balance restoration capabilities. The innovative product offers surgeons a familiar ALIF technique to increase alignment where 80% of sagittal balance exists, between L4 and S1. The C-arm Ziehm Vision RFD hybrid edition includes intuitive joystick operation, a 25kW generator, distance control for non-contact surface recognition to support patient safety, advanced active cooling for optimal generator temperature during challenging procedures, and object detected dose control for optimised image quality even when an object is moving or on the periphery of the anatomy. The device provides maximum image quality with minimum dose. It provides field of view up to 900cm² and incorporates ZAIP adaptive filter. According to Ziehm Imaging, Ziehm Vision RFD hybrid edition is the first mobile C-arm offering motorisation of all four axes. The device offers a flexible, space- and cost-saving alternative to fix installed systems. Movement can be accurately steered with the position control centre directly from the sterile field, enhancing precision and saving valuable time during surgery. The pulsed monoblock generator with up to 25kW performance delivers crystal-clear images. With flat-panel detectors measuring 20cm x 20cm and 30cm x 30cm, Ziehm Vision RFD hybrid edition provides distortion-free imaging in cardiology, cardiac and vascular surgery. Xlumena Obtains FDA Approval for Axios Pancreatic Stent December 21, 2013
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA - Xlumena has obtained the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval to market its Axios stent and delivery system, through the FDA's less-stringent de novo review pathway. The stent is reportedly the first specifically designed device for the drainage of a pancreatic pseudocyst by creating a new, temporary opening between the pancreas and the gastrointestinal tract. The Axios stent is a wire mesh tube with a silicone covering is tightly compressed and is enclosed within a catheter (a long, hollow, flexible tube), the Axios delivery system. With the Axios stent, the catheter is placed into the stomach through an endoscope that is passed through the patient's mouth and down into an area of the stomach adjacent to the pseudocyst. Unlike plastic stents that are currently on the market, the stent may be less prone to becoming blocked by solid material inside of the pseudocyst because of its wider diameter. The Axios stent can expand to more than 1/2in diameter, allowing physicians to pass endoscopic tools into the pseudocyst to clean or remove the contents of both the stent and the pseudocyst. It is fully covered to prevent leakage across the stent and tissue ingrowth and facilitates easy removal. The Axios stent comes pre-loaded in a specially-designed delivery system and is easily deployed by a single operator. According to the FDA, the approval was based on a 33-patient study of subjects with pancreatic pseudocysts of at least 6cm in diameter. Trial data showed that the stent was successfully placed 90.0% of the time, with 97% of those staying in place for the duration of treatment (up to 60 days). FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health Office of Device Evaluation director Christy Foreman said: "The Axios Stent provides a new option for physicians to effectively treat pseudocysts with a less invasive intervention than surgical removal of the pseudocyst."

National Council Applauds Action on the Excellence Act Senate and House Efforts Indicate Progress Since Sandy Hook Tragedy December 12, 2013
WASHINGTON DC – The Senate Finance Committee today voted to include the bipartisan Excellence in Mental Health Act as an amendment to the SGR Repeal legislation. The Excellence Act, sponsored by Senators Stabenow (D-MI) and Blunt (R-MO), would improve quality and expand access to mental health care through community mental health providers. The legislation would establish a 10 state demonstration program to offer a broad range of mental health services like 24-hour crisis psychiatric services while setting new high standards for providers. The legislation now moves to the full Senate for consideration. Meanwhile, Congressman Tim Murphy (R-PA), Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Oversight & Investigations Subcommittee, introduced comprehensive mental health legislation today, which included a major Medicaid demonstration program drawn from the bipartisan Excellence in Mental Health Act. The National Council for Behavioral Health has long been a champion of the Excellence Act, which would expand access to evidenced-based community health care for children and adults with serious and persistent mental illnesses. If enacted, the legislation will reduce high hospital emergency room utilization among persons living with behavioral health conditions while easing the burden on hard-pressed law enforcement agencies in urban and rural areas. Additionally, the Excellence Act demonstration will assist the Veterans Administration (VA) with serving the young men and women returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with service connected mental disorders including clinical depression and PTSD. “In the wake of the Sandy Hook tragedy, Americans have been waiting for Washington to do something meaningful to ensure that more people can get the mental health care they need,” said Linda Rosenberg, President and CEO of the National Council. “Today, we got one major step closer to that important goal. If enacted, communities across the country will benefit from improved access to mental health services. Much work remains to be done to see the Excellence Act become law, and I urge all members of Congress to support it.

TYRX Obtains FDA Approval for Antibacterial Envelope for Use with Spinal Cord Neuromodulators December 6, 2013
SAN DIEGO, CA. - Minimally disruptive surgical products manufacturer NuVasive has launched its ALIF ACR in the American Medical TYRX has secured clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to sell its AIGISRx N, an antibacterial mesh envelope that can be used with spinal cord neuromodulators. Approval for the expanded indication comes after the recent FDA clearance of the AIGISRx N for use with vagus nerve stimulators. It has been designed to securely hold a spinal cord neuromodulator or vagus nerve stimulator in place in order to offer a stable environment when the device is implanted in the body. AIGISRx N contains two antimicrobial agents rifampin and minocycline, which when released locally into the tissue, help reduce surgical site infections (SSIs). These two antimicrobial agents reduce infection by pathogens responsible for the majority of CIED, spinal neuromodulator, and vagus nerve stimulator infections, including 'superbugs' such as methicillin-resistant S aureus (MRSA). In July, the company received the FDA approval for use with vagus nerve stimulators used to treat seizure disorders and depression. "Securing this expanded FDA clearance is another key milestone for TYRX in our quest to reduce surgical site infections where the clinical and economic consequences associated with infection are significant." Tyrx president and CEO Robert White said surgical site infections are growing much faster than the underlying rate of surgical procedures, with patients often suffering consequences.

Myriad Genetics Launches New Melanoma Diagnostic Test November 13, 2013
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH - US-based molecular diagnostic firm Myriad Genetics has launched its Myriad myPath Melanoma, a new diagnostic test designed specifically for difficult to diagnose melanoma cases. It will effectively differentiate malignant melanoma from benign pigmented skin lesions. Myriad myPath Melanoma is the third molecular diagnostic test launched by Myriad in fiscal 2013. The new test has been extensively investigated in two independent clinical studies. In the recently presented verification study results at the American Society of Dermatopathology annual meeting, the test demonstrated more than 90% accuracy in differentiating malignant melanoma from benign skin lesions in a variety of subtypes. Results have recently been confirmed in an independent clinical validation study that will be presented at the American Academy of Dermatology's meeting in March 2014. Myriad myPath Melanoma is designed for these difficult-to-diagnose cases and will provide healthcare providers with objective data that will improve the diagnosis of patients with suspicious skin lesions. Malignant melanoma is an aggressive form of skin cancer, which is on the increase worldwide. According to the American Cancer Society statistics, approximately 76,000 new melanomas are diagnosed each year and more than 9,000 people will die of metastatic disease annually. In the US, there are approximately two million skin biopsies performed specifically for the diagnosis of melanoma every year. According to the company, the new test plays a vital role in accurately differentiating malignant melanoma from benign skin lesions, reducing approximately 14% or 280,000 indeterminate biopsies annually. The test is currently being launched in a phases, beginning with an early access programme that will introduce the test to leading dermatopathologists across the country.

Ethicon Energy Announces Launch of Articulating Laparoscopic Energy Device in US November 12, 2013
SACRAMENTO, CA - Ethicon Endo-Surgery (Ethicon), part of the Johnson & Johnson group of companies, has announced that its first-to-market Enseal G2 articulating tissue sealer is now available in the US. Enseal G2 articulating tissue sealer is a bipolar energy device that allows surgeons to take a perpendicular approach to seal vessels up to 7mm in diameter through a 5mm port. The Enseal G2 articulating can make manoeuvring easier, provide better access to tissue in deep or tight spaces, and improve control of the angle of approach to vessels. It allows surgeons to take a perpendicular approach to vessel sealing, which contributes to stronger seals when compared with Enseal non-articulating devices. The device also increases surgeon's ability to take the full vessel in a single bite by reducing the likelihood of internal bleeding and postsurgery complications in patients. The 'Perpendicular Blood Vessel Sealing in Surgical Practice' white paper, a cross-specialty collaboration between Dr Andrew I Brill, and Dr Michael J Stamos, concludes that in certain procedures 'technical accuracy and the security of vessel sealing are best accomplished using a perpendicular approach for the clarification of key anatomy and the optimal use of advanced bipolar electrosurgery'. According to the company, the vessels sealed with a perpendicular approach using Enseal G2 Articulating are more than 28% stronger than vessels sealed at a 45째 angle.
