Orion’s Testing and Verification program at Lockheed Martin continues to validate hardware and software integration, test subsystems and refine production operations to ensure the Orion team builds the safest, most reliable spacecraft possible to successfully execute a series of increasingly challenging human exploration missions on the path to Mars. The Ball cameras are based on the design of the docking camera that flew aboard the STS 134 Sensor Test for Orion Relative Navigation Risk Mitigation (STORRM) mission in 2011. STORRM was an innovative technology development effort led by NASA’s Multi Purpose Crew Vehicle Project Office at NASA Johnson Space Center in partnership with NASA Langley Research Center, Lockheed Martin, and Ball Aerospace. The on orbit test validated the performance of the navigation sensor suite for Orion and other future spacecraft by demonstrating a robust relative navigation design that provided the required docking accuracy and range capability necessary to meet crew safety, mass, volume and power requirements for a wide variety of future NASA missions, including those into deep space. The new ultra wide field cameras built by Ball for Orion EFT 1 have enhanced software and exposure controls, and will be positioned in various windows on the spacecraft in order to monitor the test flight as different procedures are carried out. Variations of the Ball cameras are planned for each Orion flight. In addition to providing test and docking cameras, Ball is producing the conformal phased array antennas and star trackers that will be installed on each Orion launch system. The first human rated Orion mission is slated for 2021. Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. supports critical missions for national agencies such as the Department of Defense, NASA, NOAA and other U.S. government and commercial entities.

Restoring a Treasure: U.S. Custom House, New Orleans Posted by Beth L. Savage, Director of the Center for Historic Buildings and GSA's Federal Preservation Officer on May 21, 2013 See! Save! Celebrate! is the timely and appropriate national theme for National Preservation Month, commemorated in May. GSA’s historic U.S. Custom House is a constant anchor in New Orleans’ vibrant French Quarter. Through the collaborative efforts of GSA and its partners, this architectural gem has once again been saved and, in the words of U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, stands as a symbol of “what we can do when we think about finding common good.” A recently released documentary series titled Restoring a Treasure: U.S. Custom House, New Orleans highlights GSA’s work to recover and restore the National Historic Landmark after Hurricane Katrina. The recent modernization project, which has reduced energy consumption by 13 percent thus far, is striking a measured balance to meet preservation, modern workplace, and energy efficiency goals. Designed with high quality materials, including exquisitely cut stone, plentiful natural light, and passive ventilation, the New Orleans’ beloved Custom House is testament to the fundamental sustainability of 19th century buildings. GSA’s historic buildings constructed before World War II have demonstrated lower utility and custodial costs than non historic buildings due to their thermal mass (wall thickness) and durable materials. Enhancing these innately efficient and sustainable design attributes with energy conserving new green technology preserves GSA’s historic legacy while protecting the environment and saving taxpayer dollars as long term reinvestment. Automated light controls, daylighting, efficient HVAC controls, recycling materials, and low voc paint contributed to the Custom House rehabilitation achieving LEED Gold, one of the highest levels of building performance certification. Harris Corporation Receives NSA Type 1 Certification for Cryptographic Component of Anti Scintillation/Anti Jam Modem MELBOURNE, FL, June 6,2013 — Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, has received National Security Agency (NSA) Type 1 certification for a technology capable of ensuring that the U.S. Department of Defense can continue to utilize its communications network in the event of a nuclear attack or other stressed environments. The company received NSA certification for its KGV 90 device, which provides essential cryptographic and frequency hopping capabilities for the Harris Anti Scintillation Anti Jam (AS/AJ) Modem. With the KGV 90, the Harris modem is now the only protected wideband modem to receive Type 1 certification from the NSA. Extremely resistant to signal jamming, the Harris AS/AJ modem provides the highest anti scintillation data rates available today. Anti scintillation refers to the modem's ability to operate following a nuclear event that can immobilize electronic communications systems. In 2012 Harris successfully demonstrated wideband protected communications in a contested environment over a Wideband Global SATCOM IV satellite. The modem is designed for the Protected Anti Scintillation Anti Jam Wideband Netcentric System (PAAWNS) program. The PAAWNS is being installed as part of two U.S. Army programs the AN/GSC 52 Modernization program and the Modernization of Enterprise Terminals program. Harris is the prime contractor for both programs, which will deliver next generation military satellite communications and serve as the worldwide backbone for high priority military communications and missile defense systems. "NSA certification is a significant milestone in the progress of the PAAWNS program and provides Harris with a valuable discriminator in the protected wideband SATCOM market," said Bill Gattle, vice president, Aerospace Systems, Harris Government Communications Systems.

Boeing Completes 2 Test Milestones for NASA Commercial Crew Program HOUSTON, May 31, 2013 – By successfully completing two significant tests of the integrated Commercial Crew Transportation System, Boeing [NYSE: BA] and United Launch Alliance (ULA) have moved the United States closer to regaining its capability to return humans to space. The team recently completed the first wind tunnel test for connected scale models of the Crew Space Transportation 100 (CST 100) capsule, launch vehicle adaptor and Atlas V rocket, as well as a thrust test of the Centaur rocket stage. The wind tunnel test, at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California, allowed for evaluation of the proposed launch configuration. “The CST 100 and Atlas V, connected with the launch vehicle adaptor, performed exactly as expected and confirmed our expectations of how they will perform together in flight,” said John Muholland, Boeing vice president and program manager for Commercial Programs. The CST 100 will be able to transport up to seven people, or a mix of people and cargo, to low Earth orbit destinations such as the International Space Station and Bigelow Aerospace’s planned space station. The wind tunnel tests were followed by testing of how the Centaur rocket stage would create thrust by moving liquid oxygen from the oxygen tank to the two Centaur engines, where the oxygen will be mixed with liquid hydrogen. The Centaur stage will propel the spacecraft to its intended orbit after the first stage of the Atlas V lifts the entire rocket stack into space. Centaur has flown more than 140 times since the 1960s, although the Commercial Crew Program (CCP) would be its first use for a manned spacecraft.

The WSF program and GMI will provide the U.S. Air Force with next generation weather forecasting capabilities. “The enhanced capabilities of our GMI receiver design will provide weather information critical to mission planning,” said Paul Eyring, senior director of programs for antennas, sensors and microelectronics at Exelis. “Our company legacy with space based remote sensors ensures we are supporting the WSF program with the most affordable, low risk receiver technology.” The new Exelis receiver design will offer enhanced detection of natural microwave radiation emitted from the Earth’s surface. Forecasters can use those measurements to describe ocean surface winds — including speed and direction – from space. Contract work will be performed by Exelis Electronic Systems in Amityville, N.Y. The U.S. Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC), El Segundo, Calif., manages the WSF program. In a separate award earlier this year, SMC issued Exelis Geospatial Systems a one year contract to develop a final design concept for an imaging sensor that can be used on multiple platforms and will offer the Air Force maximum flexibility in its next generation weather forecasting planning.

Revolutionizing the Future of Naval Warfare with Electromagnetic Railgun Development BAE Systems was awarded a $34.5 million contract from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) for the development of the Electromagnetic (EM) Railgun under Phase 2 of the Navy’s Innovative Naval Prototype (INP) program. The focus of Phase 2 is to advance the Railgun technology by maturing the launcher and pulsed power from a single shot operation to a multi shot capability, and incorporating auto loading and thermal management systems. “We’re committed to developing this innovative and game changing technology that will revolutionize naval warfare,” said Chris Hughes, vice president and general manager of Weapon Systems at BAE Systems. “The Railgun’s ability to defend against enemy threats from distances greater than ever before improves the capabilities of our armed forces.” In 2012, during Phase 1 of the INP program, engineers at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Virginia successfully fired BAE Systems’ EM Railgun prototype at tactical energy levels. The recently awarded ONR contract marks the completion of Phase 1 and the selection of BAE Systems as the developer for the Phase 2 launcher prototype. Phase 2 is anticipated to begin immediately with initial prototypes to be delivered in 2014. The Railgun development will be carried out by BAE Systems in Minneapolis, Minnesota and by teammates IAP Research in Dayton, Ohio and SAIC in Marietta, Georgia. The EM Railgun is a long range weapon technology that uses high power electromagnetic energy instead of explosive chemical propellants to launch a projectile farther and faster than any gun before it. When fully weaponized, a Railgun will deliver hypervelocity projectiles on target, at ranges far exceeding the Navy’s current capability.

Event SOA, Semantics, & Data Science September 10 11 – Springfield, Virginia Federal organizations are racing to capitalize on social, mobile and cloud computing trends to provide solutions for their agency mission needs. At the same time there is great pressure to spend less while improving capability, service, cost and flexibility. This event is an open knowledge exchange forum for communities of practice in Cloud, SOA, Semantics, and Data Science. It brings together thought leaders and experts from the federal and business communities to continue the conversation around best practices in advancing SOA, semantic technology and data science within the Cloud construct. The event builds on the successes of two previous events: the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) e Government Conferences and the Department of Defense SOA and Semantic Technology Conferences. This event is focused on SOA, Cloud Computing, Semantics Technology and Data Analytics. SOA uses data as a service, which in turn requires dealing effectively with semantics. Data science is used to process and analyze the data for those semantics to extract information. Given the recent pronouncement by Dominic Sale, OMB (invited Keynote) that "all content is data", this conference is especially timely and focused. Presenters and panelists will examine the benefits of governance frameworks and approaches Federal agencies are pursuing to increase the maturity and efficiency of their SOA, Cloud, Semantic Technology and Data Science. Event Infrastructure Protection conference September 18 19 – Washington, D.C. Attacks on the U.S. critical infrastructure computer networks, aimed at significantly disrupting or permanently wiping out the functioning of government and business alike, would produce cascading effects far beyond the targeted sector and physical location of the incident. In response, the President directed a comprehensive review of the Federal Government’s efforts to defend US communications and information technology infrastructure, designed to improve our resilience vs. attacks and to reduce the overall cyber threat. As a consequence, US Federal cyber security funding is poised for dynamic growth, with a cumulative value of over $65 billion over the next five years. This symposium brings together the senior level U.S. Government and Industry Cyber Security experts from the Critical Infrastructure Sectors – including the Energy, Homeland Security, Defense, Transportation, IT/Communications, Postal, Emergency Services & Banking, and Finance who are taking infrastructure protection to a new level and are creating the latest tools, techniques and solutions for protecting our resources from internal and external cyber terrorism. Influential Audience We keep it simple. The public sector sourcing process, and ultimate selection of a vendor, is going to be influenced by someone in the purchasing office. That is the community we cater to. Our media is designed so this influential set of decision makers can find the suppliers for their buying needs. We make sure our media tools are compliant as far as content and the format in which it is delivered and presented. Businesses that are serious about connecting with government buyers participate in our guides to get in front of the right decision makers. Why Government Is it because they buy everything? Pavilions at Industry Trade Shows Already have a full travel schedule of trade shows this year? Have you decreased your valuable exposure at events due to budget cuts? Don’t competitors let yo yyour ur comp petitors gget their message out to buyers while you have no presence. We establish government pavilions on the industry trade show floor for suppliers who are unable to attend. This is a cross-section of suppliers that have a place where their marketing materials, sales brochures, samples and business cards can be distributed to government attendees.
Why does it work? It works because we are able to centralize government-buyer traffic to our pavilion. Typically, we work with non-government events that h are stil ill w still well attended by public sector buyers and sourcing agents. As a resource for their purchasing we have been able to build on our relationship of over 30 years.
