The Shared Creativity of Photography and Sculpture Pu Hua-chih Photography is a means of exact reproduction; a tool for recording reality. Not only does it document personal memory, it readily summons to mind shared recollections of a particular era. At the snap of the shutter a moment is captured for posterity on special paper, while at the same instant that very act signals that this moment has irretrievably vanished. Every person owns several thick photo albums where the bits and pieces of their lives are recorded. Leafing through the pages, one re-lives the extremes of elation or despondence felt at the moment of picture taking. The “me” of today and the “me” of that distant moment are both present; muttering; as each regards the other with detachment across the void that separates them. The vanished moment is restored to life, much in the manner of a returning ghost. Ten years ago, in connection with my work, I documented the razing of an old housing project originally built for military dependents. As I wandered about the deserted rubble I came upon an abandoned photo album. Out of curiosity, I opened it to find that the picture backgrounds looked very much alike the project where I had grown up. As I gazed at these moldy and blurred photos, I was instantly transported back to my childhood, noisily chasing about with my friends and playing hide-andseek. Even the secret crack in the wall where I used to hide things came back to me. In an instant, time and space coalesced and a profusion of emotions filled my heart! Upon returning home, just as if a spell had been cast over me, I madly developed a large number of photos of scenery, friends, and family. I
“husbanded” these photos, which by now completely covered my bathroom. Perhaps I unconsciously hoped that by availing myself of this 5×7 “window”, I would be able to access some sort of terra incognita! As these pictures slowly took shape, the images became less and less precise and the region gradually expanded. At that moment I relived the sensations experienced at the instant of picture taking. Sometimes I blinked back my tears, while at other times they flowed freely. My thoughts were buried beneath layer after layer of outrageous red, yellow, blue and green colors. Of course, ultimately everything was altered beyond recognition to become what you behold today. I moved to Toucheng three years ago and embarked on my creative sculpture project. Up in my tiny studio on the top floor I work around the clock molding and shaping the clay. The touch and warmth of my fingertips enabled these sculptures to develop in accord with instinct. My role is to provide nurture and in so doing endow them with life. This work was on the same mental wavelength as that inspiring me when I had “husbanded” those photos some years back. Different life forms interact with each other and a dialogue thus becomes possible. The organism created by their interaction displays all the rich and multiple aspects of life. When carefully observing a microcosmic ecosystem that is confined within a 10 cm square, one can only marvel at the beauty and diversity of the Earth. The Earth is a vast graveyard that is both fascinating and fantastic. Saturated with the debris and remains of myriad life forms, it transforms them into organic energy. As the old perishes, new life

is born, which in turn draws from Nature the sustenance to grow. Although this multiplicity of creatures coexists in harmony, they also evolve and change according to various conditions. Each season finds them appearing in a different guise. Life in this sense, with its profusion of forms and ever-changing aspects, makes human life, as fleeting as a spark, assume even greater significance. The gene pool of living creatures, including those of Man, is a mixture of different ingredients. From the time when the Cyanobacteria plant organism first evolved in the ocean 600 million years ago, the ecosystems we know today have grown and flourished over the intervening centuries. Plants, trees, birds, and animals were at one time interdependent. As we enjoy the limited resources on Earth, we must be mindful that should the balance one day be tipped, the resulting chain reaction will be another annihilation! As a man of our time, I use the convenience of the Snow Mountain Tunnel. However, as I drive swiftly though the tunnel, I experience drowsiness akin to that of the spirits lingering along the old highway, with its many twists and turns. My children are thus deprived of many stories perfect for telling on a dark night. Sometimes I miss the time I spent in the darkroom in the old days. Standing before the shrine bathed in red light, I awaited the images to appear with a feeling of solemnity and caution, mixed with excitement and anticipation. In fact, I was awaiting the arrival of maturity, a slow, reflective, imaginative, and progressive maturity. One could even say it was a way of dealing with my own inner growth.
Today, the aggressive sale of consumer products has created a false impression of economic growth. This condition has caused an imbalance. The virtual reality created by the computer is like a hallucinogen for consumers, giving rise to the indifference and isolation that are found everywhere in the world. Why don’t we restore our sensory perception to its original condition, and enjoy the unpredictable surprises that Nature has in store for us? What I’d like to convey in my work is a warm sense of joy and respect.
