Its construction started in 1575, projected by the architect Francisco Becerra. After you end this visit, exit through the door that faces 5 Oriente Street, where you will encounter the Casa de la Cultura (Culture quarters). Inside you will find the 4 Puebla Cathedral Gallery of Treasures which comprises a significant collection of sacred art. Also in the Casa de la Cultura you will be able to appreciate one of our crowning jewels, a Poblano pride you cannot miss: the 5 Biblioteca Palafoxiana (the Palafox Library). As you can see by its name, it honors the Bishop Juan de Palafox y Mendoza, who became an extremely valuable personality in the history of Puebla’s foundation. He decided to donate his personal library to the city, establishing this important asset that nowadays comprises more than 40 thousand volumes, many of them incunabula, containing several subjects such as the vision of the universe and the origins of the Mexican culture. For instance, the most antique book dated in 1493 is “Nuremberg Chronicles” by Hatman Schedel. The architectonic style of this marvelous enclosure is baroque, a craftsmanship executed by Novohispanic woodworkers using fine woods like ayacahuite, polocote and cedar. The retablo (devotional painting) includes an oil painting of the Madonna di Trapanai figure, which is believed to be based on the sculpture of Nino Pisano from the 14th century. The floor is made of red bricks combined with Talavera pottery tiles, providing that characteristic and unique Poblano touch. Take your time, walk it slowly, imagine it full of monks and studious way back in time trying to answer many questions about the Universe. In Casa de la Cultura you will be able to find showrooms with temporary exhibitions. Also, if you like art cinema, you may relax watching what the Luis Buñuel film library has to offer.

Right across the street, the Mural de los Poblanos, (Poblanos’ wall painting) is a referral when speaking of Poblano food. Besides offering their already famous chalupa cemitas (chalupa being a traditional poblano dish, and cemita is a kind of local bread) and a large variety of mezcal, you can admire the wall painted by the Poblano artist Antonio Álvarez Morán. Among the nuns that inhabited it, Sister Maria de Jesus, well known as the Lily of Puebla, stands out, as the legend says that she was always a devoted girl who had her vocation pretty clear since her very early years. Her mother supported her and it was her father who fiercely opposed her becoming a nun. Therefore, he made her brother to shadow her permanently in order to avoid her to get near the convent. Keep walking on 7 Poniente Street and at the next corner you will find a typical Poblano style edifice. It is the premises for the Profética, the house for reading, a cozy spot for eating or drinking something, reading a book, or simply relax and enjoy for a while. When exiting Profética, take 3 Sur Street to the left and walk three blocks. At the corner, the 8 José Luis Bello y González Museum, a building from the 17th century that has suffered several modifications throughout time, awaits. It comprises 3,028 pieces of art as a result of a long life of collecting by its former owners, the Bello family. This assemblage has been passing from generation to generation, until the middle of last century when they decided to inherit it to the Puebla Fine Arts academy. Its thirteen rooms display a large variety of everything, coming from America, Asia and Europe. 18

If you have the chance to take a peek, maybe you will discover some colonial patio. When you reach the 5 de Mayo walking trail, turn left and you will find one of the greatest treasures of Puebla heritage two blocks ahead. The Chapel of the Rosary Virgin was built during the 17th century and it is considered to be - along with the temple of Tonanzintla - the most astounding example of the Novohispanic baroque and one of the greatest artistic-religious creations in Mexico. Its construction achieved two purposes: worshiping the virgin and teaching the community the Rosary praying. Its architecture, materials, paintings and ornamentation were carefully chosen, and each of these elements carries its own story. It is convenient asking the guide to explain every little detail. Near the final stretch of this route, almost in the front you will see the 6 Oriente Street, best known as the 11 Street of the Sweets or the Camote shops. The sweets prepared by the Poor Clares nuns are a Poblano tradition since the 18th century. The variety is rather extensive, you cannot miss camotes (confections made of sweet potato), macarrones (confections made of milk), and the famous Santa Clara cookies, a must. Stop by any of these stores… and indulge! Dos de los hermanos perdieron la vida ahí: Máximo Serdán durante el tiroteo, y Aquiles, se escondió en un sótano durante 14 horas y a su salida fue asesinado. La única que logró sobrevivir al ataque fue Carmen, la hermana mayor. Ella subió a la azotea para incitar a los vecinos a que se unieran a la lucha, fue herida por una bala y finalmente fue detenida junto con su madre, y encerrada en la cárcel de la Merced. Here, the first undertaking towards the Mexican Revolution took place, because of a police inspection in search of guns. It was inaugurated in 1761, but in 1902 it was under fire and it got temporarily closed. It reopened in 1940 and by 1960 the Poblano architect Miguel Pavon Rivero repaired it and left it as you can see it nowadays. In it, theater plays, opera, music, dance and fairs take place regularly. Speaking of theater, may we suggest a very novel concept called Microteatro, which is presented a few steps away from the Principal Theater. It is an amusing format consisting in plays of no more than 15 minutes, on a stage no larger than 15 square meters (160 square feet) and seats for 15 people. This fast theater emerges in Spain and has become very popular in many places around the world, Puebla included. Maybe you are so lucky to enjoy one of its shows.

Keep walking on 8 Norte Street to find a square full of easels, sculptures, coffee shops and some bars. You are right at the 2 Artists Neighborhood — formerly the square of the winch —. This space emerged in 1941 because of the gathering of some Poblano painters. It all started when the brothers Josá and Ángel Márquez, both of them being teachers at the Fine Arts Old Academy, who started teaching painting classes outdoors and imagined this as the perfect location to develop artworks at the sight of the visitors. At the opposite corner you will be able to see a crafts market called 4 El Parián. Since 1801 it is an important display for the city’s trade. In it you can find all kinds of arts and crafts. It is a red brick construction combined with talavera, which is a very Poblano traditional style. Walk through it and take with you a handmade representation of the region. Keep walking on 6 Norte Street until the Palafox y Mendoza Avenue, turn right and in front of you there is a walking street. Keep walking until reaching the 3 Sur Street, and keep on walking on 3 Oriente. Right there, the famous 5 Callejón de los Sapos, (the lane of the toads) begins. That curious name has a history, of course. They say that in colony times it was very frequent for the river San Francisco to overflow and water would fill that lane. Now let’s get to the 3 Oriente Street, the heart of the 6 Analco neighborhood, where on weekends you will be able to visit its street market offering plants, crafts, and many other interesting amenities. You will also encounter the Historic Memory Museum which belongs to the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla and has the main purpose of it is preserving and spreading its history. Next to it, “La Luz” Glass Old Factory is located, a company founded in 1935. Its owners have worked for three generations to maintain the tradition of the Poblano glass by producing articles like the hens for salt pinching, the pulque pitchers and the jugs. This area allows you to discover a great tunnel that was constructed during several centuries. It includes two sections that go underground from the antique neighborhood of Xanenetla until La Concordia Lake, by the area of the Forts, with an extension of 1030 meters (0.6 miles). This tunnel connected General Ignacio Zaragoza horses barracks with the forts of Loreto and Guadalupe. This helped to move chariots and horses during the famous 5 de Mayo battle. Along the 200 meters path (650 feet) —which is perfectly lighted and musicalized— you will be able to observe objects that were found during the digging out process, as well as a chariot that will help you to visualize the conditions in which people moved in the tunnel. Rumor has it that tunnels were not always used for military purposes, as during colonial times the wealth of the Catholic Church was discreetly being moved underground.

History has told us that in April of 1531 an adobe and tile hermitage for Saint Christopher was built here. Right where it used to be, the Guadalupe Fort is currently located. As time went by, it started being used as a gunpowder warehouse, and ended up as a fort in 1862, surrounded by a protective trench. It is a community process where talents, creativity, experiences and stories come together - shared by locals - with the purpose of illustrating in a collective and genuine way all of the traditions that give identity to the Poblanos. Nine artists from all over the country, 1261 square meters (13 500 square feet) and 583 liters (154 gallons) of COMEX paint, were the primary materials for this series of stories ranges from the participation of Saint Francis river in the formation of this city and the perfect outline that the angels made, to the relevance of some characters, such as Saint Augustine or Saint Christopher. Coming back to 11 Norte Street, two blocks ahead is the 5 National Railroad Museum, devoted to the rescue, conservation and diffusion of the trail way enterprise. At recalling those times, Puebla now has the touristic Puebla-Cholula train, a last generation traintram comprising 3 jointed train-cars and a total length of 38 meters (41 yards). With no fear of being wrong, we can assure you this is one of the most beautiful and interesting temples that you will ever see, because it shows the syncretism of the Mexican culture. As an evangelizing exercise, this temple was decorated by the indigenous, giving it a very particular touch to its details, as the presence of elements of Mexican fruits, chili-peppers, plumes and eagle knight outfits. Walk a little more and you will get to Helados Ximitl, a singular ice-cream shop that not only offers traditional flavors like chocolate or lime, but also pinole, mole, mezcal, nogada chile, and rather exotic varieties. Give yourself the chance for trying them! Let’s walk back our steps through the corridor towards the Zócalo. By the corner you will see the 5 Saint Mary of Nativity Church, which originally opened to service Spaniards. On its façade you will see the 17th century Royal Crest of the Spanich Crown.
