In the News Getting to know the Muntz Library throughout your time here at UT Tyler to help promote success during your academic endeavors here.

How many of you have ever been to UT Tyler’s Muntz Library? How many of you know where the Library is? I ask these questions each semester to both my undergraduate and graduate classes and usually the response is less than 1/4 of you that know where it is and even less that have actually spent time in the library. The Library is a place that you need to get to know better

I visited the Library this summer and was amazed how beautiful the exterior of the library is. There has been extensive renovations to make a relaxing study environment “outside” of the library. This area has benches, tables and WiFi...!

Upon entering the library I was equally impressed with

the computer workstations, community and silent floor areas, as well as the extensive number of print journals! I found the library both a great place to socialize and work together for group projects, as well as a place for total quiet that would allow you to study away from TVs, roommates, family and yes, your PHONE!! Our Library also has an extensive number of online journals, and if you cant find the article you are looking for, they will find it for you and have it sent directly to your email. This is the place you find journal articles for research projects in your

What’s New in H&K All The Way From Southern Illinois Tara Eaton in her own words...

Ms. Tara Eaton

Hello everyone I’m Tara Eaton, your new lecturer for Health and Kinesiology!

Born and raised on the mighty Mississippi River in a small, Illinois town, Go BEARS, I am very excited to be part of the University of Texas at Tyler. My path to this position and career choice was not a solid

one, but with many turns and roadblocks. Going from mortuary, pharmacy, physical therapy to corporate wellness, I finally figured out Exercise Science was my ultimate passion! I went to school at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and received my bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Wellness. Loving it so much, I decided to stay for my Masters with an emphasis in Exercise Physiology. During that time, I was a Graduate Assistant where I taught Kinesiology courses and labs

and worked with the Weight Management Clinic. After graduating this May, I became an ACSM member and am now a Certified Health Fitness Specialist. I hope for a great year and look forward to seeing many new faces.

classes...not YAHOO and GOOGLE!! The Library has also set up a page specifically for our Department. On this page there is an online chat box that you can ask Anthony Micchelli questions in realtime from anywhere you have computer connectivity. I have asked Anthony to give a presentation to our Faculty and Students related to all the Library has to offer. I really think you will be surprised at the quality and friendliness of this Library and Library Staff! The workshop will be September 14th from 7:30 to 8:30 in HPC 2055. Pizza will be included! Department Spotlight:

PHIGS Conference

Dr. Bill Sorensen has been working for over two years now to promote prostate cancer awareness in East Texas and on September 17th he is hosting the Prostate Health Initiative for Gregg and Smith Counties (PHIGS). There are great keynote and guest speakers that will be talking about cancer awareness, as well as panel sessions and many opportunities for networking. I think this will be a great step forward in promoting health in East Texas and I urge you to join us there. Dr. Marzilli

Health Faculty Member

The Department of Health and Kinesiology will hold a community-wide conference promoting prostate cancer awareness, Friday, Sept. 17. The Prostate Health Initiative for Gregg and Smith Counties (P.H.I.G.S.) Conference will start at 8:00 a.m., in the Patriot Center, room 2255. Dr. Belarmino MD (urologist) will be the first speaker. The conference ends at 1:30pm with a presentation by Dr.

Gross MD (oncologist). Prostate cancer strikes one out of six men, about the same rate as breast cancer in women, yet there is much more silence concerning prostate cancer than breast cancer. This conference will offer opportunities of connecting men, and whole

families of cancer survivors, in ways that they miss otherwise. We have witnessed the amazing community involvement with breast cancer in the last 20 years- surely this can be duplicated with prostate cancer awareness. Conference registration on or before Sept. 5 is $6.50 for students (with ID) and $12.50 for UT Tyler faculty and staff. Registration after Sept. 5 is $10 and $25. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Students should consider using this opportunity as an extra credit project for a particular class; double check with instructors beforehand.

To register, call 903.566.7032 or 903.343.5451.

Message From the Chair of Health and Kinesiology

Dr. Scott Marzilli Congratulations are in order for making it through the first week here at UT Tyler. The Department Office was crazy busy during the end of August trying to make sure we were able to help each of you have a successful start to the Fall 2010 semester and I hope we succeeded. Good luck this semester!!! Camp Muir August 10th (10,188 Feet)

Briefly I wanted to let you all know about my trip to Alaska and Seattle this summer. The trip to Alaska was amazing! From dog sledding in Juneau on Norris Glacier to catching salmon in Ketchikan, we just had an amazing time. If you have not been to Alaska then I would put it on your bucket list. Upon my return back to Seattle, I started to prepare for my climb up Mount Rainier. It was an amazing experience. I just missed making it to the summit; however, my successful climb up Disappointment Cleaver at 2:00am was quite an experience. This really was a life changing quest that I will not soon forget.

Back to business: If you think the halls and classrooms are a bit more crowded than in the past, you would be correct. The Department has seen another record enrollment this semester. We have enrollment numbers that are over 14% higher than Fall 2009. It is great to see so many new and returning faces in the classrooms and walking the halls. Please be assured that we will continue to make quality of your experience here our number 1 goal. I can’t wait to hear about your summer as well as your Fall semester. Make sure to come by my office to share with me how your semester is going!! Well, good luck and study hard...see you in the halls!

Tip of the Month There will be many more opportunities to learn about the Library, Career Center, Internships, etc throughout this year and I urge you to take advantage of what we have to offer you here in the Department. Remember, we can offer you all the opportunities in the world, and until you are willing to utilize them, they will do no good! I hope to see you at the Library presentation this month .Dr. Marzilli
