What’s New in H&K

An Upgraded 25 Seat Computer Lab Using Computing, The Department of Health and Kinesiology is Going Green! The Department of Health and Kinesiology’s Computer Lab has been both upgraded and increased in size. The computer lab now has 25 independent workstations, each with a new 20” HD monitor. This increase in the number of computers will make sure that there will always be space for you to work

on your homework, take online tests, and to just check up on the most recent current events on the web. Because of the size increase in the computer lab, we will also be able to hold classes within the computer lab. This will really help classes like Tests and Measurement as well as Biometric Methods. What is even cooler about

this new computer lab is that the use of the NComputing technology not only provides faster performance, but also runs on 90% less energy than the previous computer lab. Just in one year, the use of this new technology will save $1000’s in energy bills and will be better for the environment. We are using “the Greenest Computing on Earth.” Dr. Marzilli

Department Spotlight:

The UT Tyler Bookstore

As Chair of the Department of Health and Kinesiology, I am always trying to find ways to make your experience here at UT Tyler better. Sometimes these are programs that are started within the Department, and other times these are programs started within the College or University. I am so excited to share with you a new program at the UT Tyler Bookstore. You now have three ways to buy, or better yet, RENT your textbooks for the upcoming semester!!! If you have any questions please go to the UT Tyler Bookstore for assistance! The UT Tyler Bookstore has started a new program this Fall that will allow you to RENT your textbooks at over 50% less than buying them. This is an excellent way to be able to afford all the textbooks that are required for your classes. I am always amazed when I see the cost of textbooks today. It is not uncommon to pay over $600 for just one semester of textbooks. This new program will significantly reduce this out of pocket expense for you. If you want to still purchase your textbooks at a much lower price, you can always ask if the textbooks that are required for your classes come in an ELECTRONIC format. These formats are getting better and better and are really starting to change the way textbooks are written and used in the classroom. No matter the choice you make, please remember that textbooks are the backbones of many courses and therefore are important for you to have access to. Good luck this Fall and if there is anything we can do for you in the Department, please let us know!! Dr. Marzilli

Message From the Chair of Health and Kinesiology

Dr. Scott Marzilli The Summer is OVER and the 2011/2012 Academic Year is upon us!! I hope you all are as excited about this new year as we are. We have had some time to vacation, relax and charge our batteries...I only hope you are ready for what we have in store for you!! Get ready for a great year! My Mom and Dad

What a great summer this was for me. I got to go on a great vacation with my family to New Orleans, Honduras, Mexico and Belize. The trip was just amazing. There are just too many memories to share, but whether we were fishing in Belize, climbing Mayan Ruins in Mexico or playing with the monkeys in Honduras, it was just awesome. But now, re-energized and rested, I am ready to lead this Department into the 2011/2012 academic year. There will be many new student specific research, travel and recognition opportunities this year. One new program will be the “Student of the Year” award. This award extends our

“Above and Beyond” monthly awards given by Faculty, and will be limited to only 2 graduate and 2 undergraduate students each year. The award winners will be announced during the Fall and Spring Graduation Ceremonies! Have a great year! Dr. Marzilli

Paddle Boarding in Honduras

Tip of the Month I urge you all to participate in the “Passport to Success” Scavenger Hunt and Welcome Back BBQ hosted by the Department of Health and Kinesiology on August 26th. At the completion of this event you will know where all the important places and people are on this amazing campus. Then be sure to stay for the BBQ hosted by the Health and Kinesiology Club. Let’s all have some fun before the year gets too busy! Dr. Marzilli
