The Health and Kinesiology Club Make sure to join the new “H&K CREW” years here at UT Tyler. The club is also a great way for new Transfer Students to meet friends with similar interests.

One of the best ways to make new friends and build up your resume for Graduate School applications is to join an Academic Club!!

The “H & K Crew” has already had their first meeting; however, it is never too late to join the club. If you are interested in joining the club or finding out what club events are planned this semester, please contact Tara Eaton at 903-5655749 or email her at: teaton@uttyler.edu.

The Department of Health and Kinesiology is proud to announce its new academic club for all Departmental Majors and promises to be a lot of fun. This club is not only great for H & K students that have been at UT Tyler for a couple of years, it is also great for new H & K students. I would really encourage Freshman and Sophomore H & K students to join the club because this is the best way to make connections within the Department during your first couple of

Department Spotlight:

Stress Management

I am so excited to share with you some of the activities taking place in ALHS 4333 Stress Management this semester. I mean, come on, who doesn’t want to learn more about managing your “STRESS!” Tara Eaton teaches this class in such a way that her students not only learn about stress management methods, but they actually get to experience them first hand. If you have never taken this course, this might be one to look for in the Spring! Dr. Marzilli

Tara Eaton

Over 50 students participated in this class project and it was a great success. So the next time you feel overwhelmed with some of those reoccurring stressors, go outside and release your stress away.

Faculty Member The University of Texas at Tyler What is going on in Stress H & K Faculty Member ManageTara Eaton ment? Well it’s just what the title says, learning ways to help manage stress that comes from life. Making things enjoyable and fun can be a great way to deal with the everyday stress of life. In trying to alleviate some stress, the Stress Management students wrote their personal stressors on balloons and released them outside hoping that maybe the wind would blow all of their stress away.

One of the best ways to promote learning is to engage the learner with the lesson, and this is something that Tara Eaton strives to do with every class, every lesson and every time she “teaches” anything to anyone. This activity was only the first of many planned for this semester. Other activities that the students will learn about and experience first hand include Yoga, Acupuncture, Meditation, Exercising and a visit to the Humane Society to play with “Man’s Best Friend!” I encourage all of you to either take this class the next time it is offered, or for that matter, take any class that Ms. Eaton teaches! You will not regret it! Dr. Marzilli

Message From the Chair of Health and Kinesiology

Dr. Scott Marzilli The Fall Semester is already in full swing and it feels great! Can you believe it has already been 3-weeks? Hopefully your schedules are all finalized, you have purchased all your textbooks and you have finally started to get settled in for a successful semester. Always remember to have some fun!!! I personally wanted to welcome you to the Department of Health and Kinesiology for the start of the 2011/2012 academic year. For many of you, this is your first experience at UT Tyler and for others of you, you are now seasoned veterans of the College experience. Just like the University, our enrollment in the Department has broken all records! We have almost 130 new H&K freshman and transfer students this year that have decided to join our H&K family! That is AWESOME!!! I know the transition from High School or Junior College to a four year University may be a bit challenging right now, but I promise you, it will get better!

I can still remember the first time my parents dropped me off at school in California. I held it together until my parents left and then I cried like a baby! So if you are feeling homesick at all please don’t worry about it because you share good company! The best remedy for homesickness is to make new friends and to stay busy! Make sure to be as active in Departmental activities as you can. We have some great activities planned for this semester. Please remember that my door is always open and I would love to see you and hear how your semester is going! When I see you around please make sure to say hello! All my best and good luck!!

Tip of the Month My tip of the month relates to joining academic clubs and honor societies. It is really important, especially for freshman and/or transfer students, to join academic clubs and honor societies because they provide great opportunities to meet fellow students with similar goals and interests. Currently the Department has one academic club “The H & K Crew” and one honor society and I encourage all of you to join them if you can. We can only provide these opportunities for you, it is up to you to take advantage of them. See you at the next meeting! Dr. Marzilli
