he K to 12 PLUS project is an initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development to support the K to 12 educational reform in the Philippines. The German-Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GPCCI), alongside public and private partners, introduces elements of dual training to the Technical-VocationalLivelihood Track of Senior High Schools wherein training is conducted in two places: the school and the company. The K to 12 PLUS project pilots an 800-hour industry immersion to ensure students get the practical training needed to be work-ready after graduation. “In terms of knowledge, graduates of San Pedro Relocation Center National High School (SPRCNHS) are better,” says Mr. Virgilio Lanzuela, President of Rollmaster Machinery and one of the industry partners of the K to 12 PLUS project. Mr. Lanzuela and other industry partners helped enhance the curriculum for the Metalworking Technology course at San Pedro Relocation Center National High School (SPRCNH) to meet industry standards and demands. The students then learn those required skills during their industry immersion. This approach ensures that SPRCNHS is producing work-ready graduates.

We are producing the level of excellence that companies need. The students are self-motivated and they want to uplift their lives.

“We are producing the level of excellence that companies need,” says Mr. Lanzuela. “The students are self-motivated and they want to uplift their lives.” This motivation, he explains, is what ensures the students apply themselves in their industry immersion and learn the skills that they need to become competitive in the workforce. This observation is in line with the overarching goal of the K to 12 reform: to produce work-ready Senior High School graduates and increase their chance of gainful employment.

Her company, which specializes in iron, glass and metal crafts fabrication, has been an industry partner of the project since 2015. Under the K to 12 PLUS project, students spend more time immersed in the industry to enhance their skill set and gain an understanding of what a workshop floor atmosphere feels like. This helps students hone their skills, ensuring that they will enter the workforce truly work-ready after graduation. “There is excitement and willingness to learn more,” says Mrs. Areta, commending on the work ethics and initiative of the student-trainees in her company

They are trained to the fullest. There is excitement and willingness to learn more.

The project also shows the benefits of an actively engaged private sector in educational engineering and policy advocacy. Indeed, for these graduates, and for the company partners that trained them, there is a lot to look forward to.
