Tennis

Track

By Jessica Quas Ramapo Raider, Jonathan Carcione, has many accomplishments that may never be surpassed, leaving a lasting legacy on Ramapo Tennis. Carcione was only the sixth athlete to ever win the NJSIAA Boys Tennis Tournament of Champions twice and the third Ramapo player to win a state championship. He dominated on the court with a two-year unbeaten record of 65-0, ending his career at Ramapo 127-2. Aside from his outstanding tennis achievements, Carcione proves to be a young man of high character and a great role model for younger students and peers. He is a member of the Italian World Language Honor Society and also enjoys playing the piano, hiking, and spending time with his brothers. Carcione not only produced on the court, but also in the classroom and plans to continue his studies and tennis career at Princeton University.

By Jessica Quas Cimino sprinted her way to second place in the NJSIAA Outdoor Track & Field Meet of Champions 400 intermediate hurdles with a time of 1:00.87. Her outstanding accomplishments include winning four events at the Gene “Red” Littler Bergen County Track & Field Championships in the 400 hurdles, and both the 200 and 100 high hurdles. Alexandra was also a part of the Cardinal’s 4x400 relay team that set one of the fastest times in Bergen Championship history of 3:57.17. Cimino, described as a “once in a decade” type student, is well rounded—involved in sports, school clubs, the National Honor Society and is an accomplished singer. She is looking forward to attending the University of Pennsylvania in the fall and hopes to run track for the Quakers.

Burns, who improved to 8-1 for the season, tied the BCT record for most tourney wins with his sixth success. Andrew Herrera put the

Herrera, George Iskanderian and Joe Purritano all drove in a pair of runs in the win over

Paramus which had advanced to the championship game for the first time since 1976. In the semifinals, the topseeded Ironmen ended the unexpected run of 20th-seeded Rutherford by defeating the Bulldogs 8-3 in a game that was contested over two days due to a rain suspension. Highlighting the DBP success was a county single-game record of a12 stolen bases, three of which were pilfered by Grant

IHA Successfully Defends BCT Diamond Crown By Jessica Quas Sophomore Steph Thomas was the outstanding player throughout Immaculate Heart Academy’s run to its second straight Bergen County Softball Tournament title. The sophomore right-hander scattered five hits and one run while fanning six in hurling the Blue Eagles to an 8-1 triumph over third-seeded Paramus in the title game played on the campus of Montclair State University on June 2. Leading 2-1 entering the bottom of the third, IHA pushed three runs across the plate to increase its advantage to 5-1. Cassidy Trause doubled in a run and Danielle Ibarra drilled a two-run double and the rest was up to Thomas. The Blue Eagle had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Abby Holmes and Trause

singled and Angela McGurie drew a base on balls to load the sacks. Ibarra connected with an RBI single and Trause scored on a run-down. Lauren Feorenzo, Paramus’ outstanding hurler, drove in the Lady Spartan’s sole tally of the game in the third. IHA scratched out a 2-0 victory over 21st-seeded Hackensack in the semifinals when Thomas pitched a two-hit shutout and aided her own cause when she launched a sacrifice fly to plate senior second baseman Carly Picinich who led off the bottom of the first with a triple. Abby Thomas delivered an insurance tally when she drove in Nicole Napolitano with a two-out single in the fourth. In the lower bracket, Feorenzo scattered nine hits as the Lady Spartans defeated Ramsey 3-2 in 10 innings to knock the second-seeded Rams out of the unbeaten class. Her teammate Stephanie Huang led off the

When the game went to the 10th inning, the international tiebreaker criteria was invoked. Huang started the top of the 10th on second base, scoring on an infield out by Feorenzo who blanked the Rams in the bottom of the inning, ending the contest on a strikeout. In the quarterfinals, Paramus scored the only run of a 1-0 victory over Immaculate Conception/Lodi in the bottom of the first on an error. Feorenzo scattered four hits in picking up the shutout “W” while the Blue Wolves Kelly Hage allowed only two hits and no earned runs in defeat. Thomas did it all once again for the Blue Eagles in a 5-0 victory over Saddle Brook. She legged out a two-run triple while hurling a two-hit shutout. Taylor Farro gave up eight hits and a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, but the Comets bailed her out with only four hits when Hackensack rallied to a 3- win over Ridgewood. Kaylas Gravalis blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the first and Ally Mende tossed a threehitter to highlight Ramsey’s 4-1 win over Northern Valley/Old Tappan which got on the board in the top of the seventh on a solo round-tripper by Mary Wiley. In the NJSIAA North Jersey Non-Public A Division championship game that paired the Bergen and Passaic County champions on the diamond, Immaculate Heart added a third title to its collection when the Blue Eagles pulled out a 43 victory over DePaul in 10 innings as Picinich scored on a suicide squeeze bunt laid down by Rachel Pollard. In the opening round, Thomas hurled a non-hitter in a 15-0 rout of St. Dominic Academy. Other post-season state sectional highlights included a three-run homer by junior third baseman Taylor Armstrong that boosted Leonia to a 7-5 upset over Pompton Lakes to earn the Lady Lions their first NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group I victory in 14 years. Immaculate Conception/Lodi’s

Hage tossed a non-hitter when the Blue Wolves ousted Becton 17-0 from the states and Fair Lawn’s Marisa Sponuzzi fired a no-hitter to support the Cutters’ 1-0 win over North Bergen. Julie Sosnicki allowed no hits and drove in four runs as Rutherford trounced Central of Newark 23-0 with Ally Paskas blasting a pair of homers and driving in seven runs. COACH OF THE MONTH

LaRezza Helps to Make it a ‘Magical’ Season for IHA By Edward Kensik WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP — It might have been at the beginning of the season, but for Anthony LaRezza it was definitely telling for the season. LaRezza, the coach of Immaculate Heart Academy, helped guide the Blue Eagles to the Triple Crown, Big North, Bergen County and state Group titles. For the IHA head coach he had an inkling about this team way back near the start of the season, April 14 at the Mount St. Dominic softball tournament in Caldwell. In the game Blue Eagles pitcher Steph Thomas would strike out back-to-back batters in the top of the seventh as Pennsbury, PA was looking to take the lead with runners on second and third and one out. IHA would score four runs in the eighth inning to win 8-4 against the Pennsylvania powerhouse. Not only did IHA garner the Triple Crown, but they went undefeated, 32-0, along the way and could be considered one of the best if not the best softball team in New Jersey history. “I knew that we would be in contention for all those titles,” said LaRezza. “If you told me that we would go undefeated I would say you were crazy. I have good teams at IHA but NJ Sports Fitness & Wellness Telephone: (973) 605-1213 Fax: (973) 605-1883 editor@sportsfitnesswellness.com 173 Morris Street, 2nd Floor Morristown, NJ 07960 ellness.com

this team to go undefeated is something special.” The season culminated with the Non-Public A victory, 3-0, over St. John Vianney at Toms River East. The group title avenged a 10-2 loss to the same St. John Vianney last season in the same game. “I think beating them (St. John Vianney) that it validated the whole season and it truly was a magical season,” said LaRezza. While it is a cliché LaRezza said that the entire team enjoyed playing with each other and was cohesive. “Everybody was on board and it was a pleasure to coach this team,” said the IHA head coach. “IF they don’t coexist, they won’t win.” While the Blue Eagles do not have captains, he points to seniors Carly Piccinich and Abby Holmes. “They took the lead,” said LaRezza. On the field IHA was led by four players who were named to the All Bergen County first team in sophomore Thomas, junior catcher Ally Vergona, infielder Piccinich and sophomore outfielder Rachel Pollard. The IHA head coach started as an assistant coach in 1997 though 2003 at the Washington Township school. He left IHA along with then head coach Jeff Horohonich. As it turns out he would spend one year at Montclair Kimber-

ley Academy before coming back to IHA, this time as a head coach in 2004. “I asked H (Horohonich) if it was okay that I would go back,” said LaRezza. “I wanted to get his blessing.” Horohonich, who now is the athletic director and head basketball and softball coaches at Immaculate Conception in Lodi, had brought in LaRezza to IHA in ‘97. For LaRezza he attended Montclair State University for about a week when he decided to play minor league baseball in the late 1980s and the early 1990s. After his stint in minor league baseball, LaRezza returned to New Jersey and started the New Jersey Pride in 1991. The Pride’s origins were in Newark and was named after a Newark project called Project Pride. As it turned out LaRezza just grew to love the sport of softball and likes it better than baseball. “The game is quicker and faster,” said the IHA head coach. “I didn’t think I would get respect from the guys.” LaRezza ended up at IHA after one of the players who also played for the Pride suggested him to Horohonich for a coaching position. The player was Meaghan Asselta who is now head softball coach at Lafayette College. For LaRezza he said that there

have been some big changes since he first started coaching in 1991 for high school softball including moving the circle from 40 feet to 43 feet, the same as in college, but there are others. “The female athlete has come a long way,” said LaRezza who added. “It seems to be more sports-specific now.” He added though that he believes that the girls should try other sports. “I would never deter a girl from playing another sport,” said LaRezza. “I said knock yourself out.” Looking back on the season the IHA head coach points to two of the wins in the drive to win the Non-Public A North state sectional title. The 10-inning 4-3 victory over DePaul to win the sectional title and also the 2-0 win over Pope John in the sectional semi-finals.

38 Home Games Remaining at Yogi Berra Stadium By Bryan Wasyluk Fireworks highlight the remaining Saturday night home game promotions announced Jordan Cascino, Director of Group Sales for the Jackals. While there are special events and promotions scheduled for all 38 games left to be played at Yogi Berra Stadium on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, two fan favorites are the Tuesday Happy Hours and the Thirsty

Thursday promotions. A special event takes place on Monday, June 27 when everyone celebrates Jack the Jackal’s 15th birthday and the opposition is provided by Les Capitales de Quebec. Every Sunday game, all of which start at 2:05PM), is Family Funday Sunday with $1 Hotdogs, kids running the bases, catching balls in the outfield after the game, and enjoying an autograph session with Jackals players.

2012 NEW JERSEY JACKALS REMAINING HOME SCHEDULE

Jackals Celebrate 15th Anniversary By Toni PlantamuraRossi Founded in 1998 as a franchise in the Northeast League, the New Jersey Jackals have utilized Yogi Berra Stadium on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ throughout the franchise’s existence on the diamond. “Minor” is not a word to describe the overall operation of the New Jersey Jackals except when it comes to labeling the pricing of attending a game. It is “major” when describing the physical surroundings of the venue and the degree of family-oriented fun that is present. On the field, Angel Berroa launched a career that elevated him to becoming a major league infielder who was selected the American League Rookie of the Year in 2003 while a member of the Kansas City Royals. Pete Rose, Jr, who played as PJ Rose, was on the Jackals’ roster in 1998 and 1999 while Timo Perez played in the outfield at Berra Stadium in 2009 before joining the Detroit Tigers. Paramus’ Isaac Pavlik, a 5-7, 170-pound southpaw is a current standout who is on the page 26

brink of establishing many new career pitching records. The 33-year old is 3-0 this season after posting a team high 13-3 ledger last year. His career statistics include appearing in 59 games with a 24-11 record and ERA of 3.54 while striking out 233 batters. In their inaugural 1998 campaign, the Jackals posted the Northeast League best-record of 53-31 and followed with a sweep of two playoff series to capture the championship with a final season win over the Albany-Colonie Diamond Dogs. The following year the Northeast League was absorbed into the Northern League. The Jackals went 45-40 during the regular season, swept the Allentown Ambassadors in the first round of the playoffs but fell to the Diamond Dogs in the finals. In 2005, the Jackals joined the Can-Am League and continue to flourish. One constant at Berra Stadium over the years as managers, coaches and players came and went as been the presence of Jack the Jackal, the team mascot. The mascot has provided team recognition and branding that kids and adults love, connecting the fan base to the team as a family.

Jackals Serve Diamond Delights Family-Style By Bryan Wasyluk From the naming rights of the venue, to the meticulous manicure of the diamond and the ambience of the vendors’ concourse one strolls along to get to the seats, it is a major league experience at minor league prices. For young and old, the New Jersey Jackals, a member of the Can-Am League, a non-affiliated minor baseball league founded in 1936, provides a local venue within 25 miles of the Yankees and Mets, but at affordable family-style prices. The league is operating with five franchises during the 2012 season, including the Jackals and Newark Bears in New Jersey. The other teams are the Quebec Capitales, Rockland (NY) Boulders and the Worcester (MA) Tornadoes. Before entering the stadium, one may visit the adjacent Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center that is recognized as the metropolitan New York

area’s premier sports education center. Yogi Berra’s values, extraordinary Hall of Fame accomplishments and lifelong commitment to the education of young people were the inspiration and foundation of the facility that was built privately by a group of friends and admirers to pay tribute to the remarkable life and career of the Yankee legend. As tenants of Yogi Berra Stadium, the ownership and management of the New Jersey Jackals are utilizing 22 college and graduate school interns this season, providing real-life experiences for students looking to enter the Sports Industry. On a Thursday evening in May, the Jackals’ hosted the Fairleigh Dickinson University Graduate School of Sports Administration’s Sports Media & Communications Class. The Jackals entertained and defeated the Rockland (NY)Boulders in a thrilling 3-2 contest that saw a pair of solidly bleated round-trippers.

Family Excitement Every Inning at a Jackal’s Game By Leo Ciappina Every inning at Yogi Berra Stadium is exciting to watch especially for Jackal fans who like to be part of the action. With over 30 various promotions there is always something new for fans to view and experience. Between every inning several interns and Jack the Jackal, the team’s mascot, take the field with a challenge for the fans. Usually the first promotional challenge is a T-shirt Toss to the loudest fans to get the crowd excited. Then there is the Launcha-Jackal that includes a young fan who receives three chances trying to catch a small Jackal in a net that is being launched by an elastic slingshot. If the fan catches it just once, they receive jackal dollars that can be used for food or in the Jackals team store. Next was a fan favorite when two fans were selected for the Dizzy Bat Race. The fans compete against one another spinning around with their foreheads on the bat ten times then race across first base as the crowd cheers them on. Another promotion included a Sumo match between two selected fans that dressed in heavy sumo suits. The two fans chest bumped each other several times until one was knocked down. The one who remained standing was declared the winner. The biggest promotion that is done at Yogi Berra stadium

is the Launch a Ball. Throughout the game a few interns go around selling $1 tennis balls and fans can buy as many as they want. At the end of the game, hula hoops are placed all over the infield. Then fans take the tennis balls and try to toss them into the hula hoops, which represent a different prize if made. The further the hula hoop the better the prize. Some of the prizes included jackal dollars, free game tickets and free Yogi Berra Museum tickets. There were 22 college students who are serving internships with the Jackals this season. They not only absorb a grass-roots learning experience preparing them for careers in the sport industry, they also get a good physical workout.

Helping Teens Make the Most of the Library By Dr. Raymond J. Huntington In the digital age, it may seem that the days of the library being the primary place for school research are long gone, but libraries continue to offer the best research databases available - databases that can’t be accessed via an internet search. Navigating the library is an important research tool for any student. How can students best use library resources? Here are several tips for students to become better researchers: Ask for the librarian’s assistance. Librarians can help your teen get to know the lay

of the library, but they can also help guide your student through the various catalogs and research databases and how best to use them. Your teen should take advantage of their expertise and availability to students. Move beyond the internet. Google is not enough - even specific databases such as Google Books and Google Scholar do not offer the depth and breadth of other library catalogs. Schools’ library systems have access to networks of electronic resources that contain information that cannot be found anywhere else. Need materials from across

In Northern New Jersey, that’s what happens every time our TEAM come(s) out to play. That’s why our State Farm® team is proud to support them all season long.

the world? Try the WorldCat database. Researching a historical figure? Try your library’s biography database. Students should get familiar with the variety of resources available and their proper uses. Understand the differences between primary and secondary sources. A well-researched paper on World War II should cite as many primary sources as possible, as opposed to only referencing materials that are several steps removed from the war itself. What’s the difference? Original documents such as interviews, official records, speeches or diaries are considered primary sources, whereas magazine articles, commentaries or textbooks are secondary sources. Again, librarians are a great resource to identify solid sources of information. Get to know the school’s databases. While your teen’s high school may use a few databases, large public libraries or college libraries may have hundreds of databases to choose from. Learning how to research topics using different databases will prepare your teen for college-level research. If you live near a college campus, encourage your teen to visit and get familiar with their resources - and seek the help of a research librarian. Evaluate sources. As a teen progresses through high school, teachers will hold him or her to a higher standard when it comes to research. Relying on Wikipedia will not suffice. If sources are not primary sources, they still must

be credible and factual. If a student uses an online source, he or she must make sure it is valid and reliable. A librarian can help students evaluate their findings to determine their quality, and assist in further research if better sources are needed. When your teen goes on to college, good research skills will be an important asset, and students who are familiar with the resources and services offered at the library will be a step ahead. Encourage your teen to utilize the library and take advantage of the knowledge and skills of librarians. Not only will this make him or her a better student now, it will also help lay the foundation for success at college. Parents who want additional information are encouraged to call the local Huntington Learning Center at 201-2618400 Ext. 515. Dr. Raymond J.
