Jeanne Frias Agdamag Suria Current City Long Island, New York 40+ years ago, our Literature teacher taught us how to identify the components of a short story so we will learn how to summarize them. The basics are the character, setting, theme, conflict, and plot, which is arguably the most important element of a story. We then were asked to identify the elements of a plot—exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution/denouement (pronounced as dei-noo-maa) as she would repeatedly asked us to pronounce. I started my write-up with this because I want to tell everybody that if my life is a story, it will probably on a chapter where the plot is already on its denouement. The action started when I got married, happily at first, but some bad spirit got in our lives and ruined everything leaving me to rear 4 growing children by myself. Being a mother and father at the same time, a government employee working at the airport, not to mention, being a tutor to my kids, disciplinarian, part-time businesswoman to make both ends meet, is no joke. Luckily, on 2011, my eldest son decided to become a real estate broker. Back then, anybody can take the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) Real Estate Broker exam if one has a Bachelors degree. He passed the exam and became a licensed real estate broker. Hmmm, my son a real estate broker, why can’t I be? A year after, i decided to take the exam and 2

became a licensed real estate broker too. Meanwhile, working in the airport and being trained to become an Instructor on Aviation Security and subsequently became one took a toll on me that I decided to practice my new-found career. A group of friends formed our real estate company vis-a-vis construction company, which I managed. Everything changed when I changed path. I got to choose my time and I was doing well in all aspects life has to offer. It was also during this time that I was awarded a free plane fare to the USA for being a top seller of a condominium developer in my city, the city of golden friendship, Cagayan de Oro. March 1, 2018, my first step to New York city at JFK airport, I felt that this place wants to engulf the whole of me. I should have been here a long time ago. This place is where I feel I belonged! A few months after a short trip in the Midwest and Texas, I met my so-called partner and we’re still growing fonder together. Up to this date, like I always say, “ I don’t want to lose this loving feeling.” I so love New York that I’m staying here as long as I have this loving feeling in my heart. So what’s after a denouement? I guess it will be “The End.” The end for this book. But watch out folks, I’m eagerly waiting for Book 2. I hope you all are too. We’ll see if we get to read it on our 50th.

A Letter to My 16-year Old Self I am writing this letter to the lonely, homesick but determined me when I spent that first night alone in my dormitory in UP Diliman. The four (4) years of hard work, endless nights of study spent in isolation from my high school classmates due to my self-imposed rule is now over and ahead of me is another four years of studying alongside the best students in the country. I would have told you then not to worry. That you will graduate with your degree in BA Economics from UP Diliman and in another four (4) years, graduate from the College of Law at the University of San Carlos as a working student and eventually pass the Philippine Bar Examinations in 1991. That you will not spend the rest of your life alone. It will only be after you return to Cebu from UP Diliman that you will meet the man God was preparing for you. He will be much older than you and will not share your high school and college memories – coming from a world so different from yours. Neither will he share your liberal beliefs and love for individual freedoms. That your only bond is your belief in making God the center of your lives. You will have to wait another six (6) years before you will marry, and you will spend the first twelve (12) years of your married life apart from each other due to his work as an idealistic officer in the Armed Forces. That during that span of time, you will have two (2) precious children, raise them mostly by yourself and struggle to make a name in your chosen field of specialization in law. Endless nights of being alone, studying and preparing is you lot in life with only your Bible in the evenings to comfort you. Praying that God will protect your spouse in the war zone – not knowing if the next telephone call will be the dreaded condolence, they usually give to war widows. That you will conduct yourself with dignity as his wife, support him in his career, suffer in silence the long separations and act as his gracious hostess and spouse in military circles. That you will enter an entirely different world from

That in the years to come, you will become the poised and gracious military wife who attends all his Philippine Military Academy reunions and military affairs in the various military camps in the Philippines where he would be stationed. That I would have told you not to worry because all this time, you will be in Cebu City close to your parents and beloved elder sister. That you will manage your family business alongside your legal practice. That you will have the joy of seeing your two (2) children graduate from college – the eldest with two (2) degrees in Entrepreneurship and later in Fine Arts major in Advertising and the youngest with a degree in Architecture. I would have told you that in the end, your training in UP and your discipline as a lawyer will carry you through the last two (2) decades. That despite everything that is happening right now in the country, you will still believe in the rule of law and respect for life and individual rights. That God is still there despite His seeming silence in injustices you saw first hand and read about in your 30-year legal practice. That somehow, you will be determined to make a difference in this world and leave it a better place for your two (2) children by lecturing about women’s rights and gender equality in radio, TV and in the barangays and by devoting your time and resources to the Gideons International by distributing bibles to hospitals, medical personnel and students. That you would try your best to make your spouse, parents and children proud by quietly earning a name in your chosen field and become respected by your peers for your body of legal work. That you will use your knowledge of law for

good and never take the easy way up by compromising on your legal ethics. That a part of your UP self will always make your eyes tear up and your heart ache when you read about the helpless abused by those in power. That you struggle against becoming bitter and cynical and continue to hope and pray to God in silence. That in the end, as you now enter a milestone in your mid-fifties, you can look back at your life and say that you would not have it any differently. That you would still choose to be who you are now. No regrets, apologies nor excuses. —Atty. Melina Almase Martinez

Message—I want to share a beautiful message with you, my dear batchmates. This is a piece from poet/writer, Bianca Sparacino, reflecting on the unique year 2020. I believe that her message still resonates currently. I hope that it will speak to your soul.

14

“You’re going to realize it one day—that happiness was never about your job or your degree or being in a relationship. Happiness was never about following in the footsteps of all those who came before you; it was never about being like the others. One day, you’re going to see it—that happiness was always about the discovery, the hope, the listening to your heart and following wherever it chose to go. Happiness was always about being kinder to yourself; it was always about embracing the person you were becoming. One day, you will understand that happiness was always about learning how to live with yourself, that your happiness was never in the hands of others. It was always about you. It was always about you.”

Sparacino further elaborates: “I hope this year is teaching you to let go. I hope this year is teaching you how to see things differently. I hope you learn how to let go of everyone’s opinion of your life, because there is no universally correct way to live a life that is solely your own. Every human being has different goals, and different views as to what happiness is. People will judge you, the world will try to change you, but if you allow for that to alter your path, you’re going to end up living someone else’s life. Make your life your own. I hope you learn to let go of your tendency to favor being cool, over being connected. We often protect ourselves from seeming too eager or too interested, we hold our feelings back because we don’t want to seem overly emotional or tender. We silence our instincts, we bankrupt our souls, and at the end of the day we feel alone. Remember—there is nothing wrong with vulnerability, with being human, with unhinging your ribcage and sharing your heart with this world. Remember—there is beauty to be found in being the person who cares. So, care. I hope you learn to let go of a love that won’t love you back, because you deserve to be chosen. And the truth is—there are so many breathtaking people in this world who will choose you, people who have the potential to create within you something that is foundational, something that drives and inspires you to be a better person. Open yourself up to them; defend the kind of love you deserve. But most of all, I hope you learn how to let go of the idea that it’s too late. It is never too late to change your life. It is never too late to become the person you have always hoped you could be, or to love the way you have always wanted to love. We often forget that we are not bound by our past. We don’t have to be who we were a year ago, we don’t have to make the same mistakes when we were younger; we can want different things, we can grow. We have to believe that we are never too old, never too jaded, and never too broken to take our first steps towards change. We wake up every single day with the ability to start fresh—it is never too late to take advantage of that. It is never too late.” 15

(paraphrased St. Augustine) Take Oh Lord, and receive, all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will; whatever I have or hold are yours, and I will give those back to thee; give me only your love, and that will be enough, and I will ask for nothing more. High School was one of the best years in my life. In elementary, I studied at an exclusive school for girls in STC and made the bold move to transfer to UPCC. It was one of the best decisions I made. My school years in UP not only quenched my thirst for knowledge but it also gave me the best experience and memories, received the highest quality education by competent teachers and most of all established endearing friendships. It was a great foundation for me and I am very THANKFUL. My career in banking commenced right after college and having the BS Major in Mathematics degree, I was confident that I can tackle anything that involved numbers, analysis, computation, problem solving etc. But I was mistaken, I still needed to learn a lot more along the way which entailed perseverance, endurance, resilience, determination, grit and hardwork. I enjoyed my journey in the corporate world not only because of the monetary and promotion rewards but it was even made more meaningful because of the friendship, trust, camaraderie, teamwork, community service and making a difference in the lives of people from all walks of life. I maintained my fun loving spirit, vivaciousness, sociability yet I remained downto-earth, level headed and compassionate. At this point, I am fulfilled knowing that I have mentored and developed people bringing out the best in each one of them. These accomplishments inspires me and makes me forever GRATEFUL. My family life gave me beautiful memories to cherish in this lifetime. Having nine(9) older siblings is a privilege especially that we remain close with one another up to this time. I admire my parents who sacrificed a lot to give us a good education. With God’s grace, I have a loving husband, John Dennis, the father of my two(2) children. He makes me laugh, lightens my load, gives me encouragement when the going gets tough and we celebrate life’s joys together. Firstborn Jared is our gem, he plays classical piano and sings with feelings as though he is an old soul. Jaycee is our treasure who inherited my interest for mathematics and she is a kind, charming, creative and thoughtful daughter. Furbabies have been a part of our life and they brighten up our day. The happiness of having a wonderful family is God’s gift and I am truly BLESSED

Ann Celina Deang 22

I am Ann for short but sometimes called Ann Celina (when I’m in trouble at home) or Ann-Ann (by my Lola when I was a wee bit). This story is mostly about the turning points in my life, the glimmer of light in a lifetime of chances where paths fork and the future begins. I was a very shy kindergarten kid who had an inferiority complex that stayed with me until grade 5. So much so that when I topped the class exam at grade 3, I was meant to be the class representative for the school’s spelling bee. The teacher chose the 2nd runner up because she thought I would have stage fright at the St Theresa’s colossal auditorium (for a shy 3rd grader with such a gargantuan responsibility to represent the class). The turning point came when my grade 5 teacher chose me to play lead role in a drama called Lam Ang. She was someone who believed, hence, I started believing in me. My high school story began when I sat in the exam for entry to UP Cebu High School. When time was up to “pass the papers”, I handed mine to the person sitting towards the aisle. The turning point was that my first crush was born. During my first year high school (1978, UP Cebu, Bartlett). It was where I learned what friendship was about and what it means to truly belong. A group was formed called MALAJAP, acronyms of our first names. My fondest memory was going to the hill at the back of the school during lunch time with my friends. First crush, learning how to swim, weekends at the beach, classes at the gazebo (classroom with no walls, conducive to minds wandering and lack of concentration because you can’t hear what the teacher is saying especially during a heavy downpour).

The fun was short lived. My family moved to Manila in 1979. I sat in the exams to apply for the UP Rural High School, Los Banos using their 4th grading exam papers and made it through with 2 others out of 20 entrants. I was a Cebuana who couldn’t speak Tagalog fluently so I was thought to be Vietnamese (?) as I spoke mostly English. To sum up, my yearbook caption says, “ the classic face that drowns a thousand jokes” as people had to repeat and explain their jokes so I get it. Fast forward 7 years later, I completed my BS Computer Science at UP Los Banos as one of the 30 who completed the first program offered in the country. The turning point came when the course was offered at the time I was lining up to enroll for my course. Right place, right time! And so, my adventure as a “woman in technology” began and opened doors to jobs overseas.

through our systems). I rose through the ranks from IT Analyst/Programmer to VP, Head of Client Technology for the Australian division. I experienced Executive level dynamics for 8+ years as the highest ranked IT person and the shortest by height in the “B” room. Today, I am based in Seattle since 2017 working for the largest IT and Retail giant called Amazon Inc. They found me from my Linkedin profile and sent me an email (I found in my junk folder) to invite me to apply for a role in their HQ in WA. I took on the job offer and relocated to the US. This changed the last 4 years of my life. Enough about me and how I came about. My family is one I hold close and dear. My husband is an IT Consultant, surprise! I have 2 lovely daughters, the oldest is a licensed veterinarian

doctor doing her residency in cardiology at UGA after completing her Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine at Sydney University. My youngest just finished her MBA and is planning to pursue work opportunities in the UK next year. She is in the creative space for a news media company, developing exciting digital products and content. If you get the chance to know them, they are loving, self-driven, independent thinkers, and I thank God everyday! I’d like to, one day, go back to Sydney with my family, hoping to be the doting grandmother and retire early to pursue other interests like jazz dancing and photography. P.S. My most memorable photography road trips were in Sagada and Bohol with my Dad who taught me photography. Here are some of the photos.

I worked in various industries such as Insurance, Airline, Institutional Investment banking (Wall Street), Workforce Management. I reached my highest point in my career working at a large financial institution (one of 3 banks where 60% of Wall Street trades pass

Todd Gonzalez:

Hello everyone. I’m not really sure what to put on here. It was so much easier 40 years ago when we were making our high school yearbook. It was name, date of birth, accomplishments, motto or saying, and picture. Where to start? Well the story of my life has been pretty conventional compared to some of our classmates. At least based on what I have learned of our other classmates’ lives from David’s KYB podcast and stories I sometimes hear on the grapevine. Some of my life’s details have already been divulged in the KYB podcast. As David had mentioned in the intro, I initially started med school in CIM for exactly one week and then transferred to Southwestern University. What many may not know is that Alma Alfonso’s mom was the reason for the transfer. It turns out that scholarships were being sponsored at that time by the SWU Medicine US Alumni Association. Alma Alfonso’s mom-Lydia Aznar Alfonso was a friend of my mom’s and happened to visit my mom at that time. When she learned I was in CIM, she offered one of the scholarship slots to me. Of course, med school tuition was not cheap so the decision was easy (and also hard) to make. Easy because of the financial benefits, but also hard because everyone I knew was in CIM and I pretty much knew no one in SWU. After med school, I met my future wife Vangie when I was doing my postgrad internship in Manila. We then went to the US for residency training in Internal Medicine in Chicago. We moved to the Carolinas after we completed our training and we have practiced medicine here ever since. We are blessed with two very smart and wonderful kids. As I had mentioned at the beginning of this write-up, my life has been pretty conventional. Boy meets girl, they fall in love, have kids, have a successful career, and then grow old(er) together. In other words not much drama. Boring, if you want to call it that. But drama/ exciting is often times overrated and sometimes downright terrifying. There is something to be said for a laid back, drama-free life. And not all of it is negative. If I could have it over, I wouldn’t change a single day (hmmm, sounds like a song, doesn’t it?). I wish to thank all of my classmates and teachers, and of course my parents, who in one way or another, helped make me the person I am today. I enjoy traveling. One of the most wonderful memories I had was as a child going on long meandering road trips with my family with the radio playing what would become the soundtrack of my life in the background. It was temporarily interrupted by adulthood and the responsibilities that accompany it. One of the first things I plan do when I retire (or semi-retire) is go on a road trip with the stereo playing what else but the soundtrack of our lives and then feel the wonderful feelings all over again. I hope God above is not laughing while I plan. Until then, sayonara my friends. Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars. God-willing, I hope to see you all in July 2022 for our 40th reunion.

The two biggest passions of my life are travel and scientific/clinical-capability development. These two passions intersected when I was given the opportunity to lead the global scientific development group in Novartis (Basel, Switzerland) in 2012. My department included the Education Office, Diversity and Inclusion group and the Global Health Unit. The overall objectives of my department was to develop capabilities (digital knowhow, personnel, instrumentation and technologies, etc) within and without Novartis. In order to be able to test Novartis products in a wide range of patient populations, we needed to strengthen clinical capabilities of several clinics in Africa and South America. i developed an intensive program of fellowships/internships for scientists from the global south into several Novartis campuses in the US, Switzerland, UK and shanghai. We also established a program whereby out-dated but still usable scientific equipment in Novartis were donated to various labs in different countries (BTW, UP Diliman and U of Santo Tomas were also recipients of these programs). Finally, i recruited scientists and clinicians from the various Novartis campuses to donate their time and together we developed educational modules geared towards drug discovery and development to enable these institutions to conduct clinical trials according to standards set by the European Medicines Agency and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Since this program was initiated, we had enabled the conduction of the very first FIRST-in-HUMAN trial in the continent of Africa (Cape Town, SA), a Bioequivalence trial in Nairobi, a Proof-of-concept trial of a cancer drug in Buenos Aires, and a drug-drug interaction study in Zimbabwe. We also successfully completed a screening of 5,000 school children in Zambia for rheumatic heart disease using a portable echo-cardiogram machine that we brought into the schools, developed a hand-held device that would detect counterfeit drugs in the field in Zimbabwe, and initiated a sickle cell disease program in the Volta region of Ghana. Additionally, we partnered with several Novartis country pharma organizations in Russia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Georgia, Armenia

David Lardizabal spent 3 years of his High School in UP Cebu. In his senior year, he decided to become a Rotary Exchange Student in 1981. He stayed in Beaverton Oregon and graduated at Sunset High School. He returned to UP Cebu for one year and then moved to UP Diliman. He was a part time student activist and part time Pre-Physical Therapy major. He moved on to UP Los Banos and majored in B.S. Zoology. There, he was able to focus more on academics and rekindle his spirituality. He joined the Red Cross Youth and Philobioscientia organization. He graduated in 1987 and returned back to Cebu to study medicine at Cebu Institute of Medicine. He graduated from CIM in 1991. Originally, he wanted to become a neurosurgeon and applied to Southern Islands Medical Center. He waited for 3 months but was rejected. The Chief Resident of Cebu Velez General Hospital took David as an internal medicine resident in March 1993. There, he found his passion for internal medicine and neurology. His first mentor in neurology was Dr. Rogelio Chua. With his guidance and mentorship, he was accepted in Philippine General Hospital in January 1996. David’s father had post-stroke epilepsy and he wanted to specialize in neurophysiology/Epilepsy. He applied to 60 Medical centers in the USA but was only accepted for an interview at Duke University and Cleveland Clinic in 1998. He had no money to travel to the USA and he used his single credit card and maxed out his credit to buy a round trip ticket. He had his first interview at Cleveland Clinic Ohio and he was accepted on the spot after showing his eagerness to learn about epilepsy and neurophysiology. He was under the mentorship of Dr. Harold Morris III and Hans Luders. At Cleveland Clinic, he started to do more clinical research and publications. He was also awarded for his basic research and teaching. Since David was foreign medical graduate, he had to apply for a waiver program for his immigration at an underserved area in Northeast Missouri. After 3 years of community service, he returned back to the academe at University of Missouri to set the first epilepsy center in Mid-MO. After 5 years, he was recruited back by Cleveland Clinic to help set up the Neurological Institute at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi from 2014 to 2017. He eventually returned back to the United States and pursued academic neurology at Washington University in St. Louis. David got his MBA degree in December 2020 while he was practicing General Neurology. David is shifting to healthcare administration in June 2021. He will be the National Director of Neurology of the top primary care center in the United States. He has 4 children (Dorothy, Dominic, Jaynell, Joshua) and a lovely wife, Janet. He also has a cat named Professor Whiskers who is now 16 years old.

I thank the Lord for everything He has blessed me with, contentment in a simple life, a happy marriage, and the capacity to share my blessings to the people close to my heart. I have been blessed with a very loving husband, Alfredo ‘Boboy’ Rodriguez, who is the love of my life. We were childhood playmates since we were 8, sweethearts for 7 years and married for 28 years now. We would have loved to have children, but God apparently had other plans for us. We have a 9-year old Spoodle named Lucky that we adore and spoil. He may have 4 legs, but he is family to us. Over the years we have come to realize and have embraced our purpose in life - to be a blessing to our family and those who matter to us. God has blessed us with careers and the resources to share them with our parents, siblings, nephews and nieces. It is our prayer for them to achieve their dreams and lift them out in times of life’s struggles. I am a Certified Practicing Accountant in the Philippines and in Australia. In 2005, we migrated to Sydney, Australia. I have been with Baxter Healthcare Pty Ltd Company for 15 years now, mainly working in finance in various positions. Currently working as Sr. Supply Chain Accountant , business partnering with Supply Chain Directors and Finance Directors, helping them make sound business decisions. What keeps us busy aside from work is family. Boboy’s niece ‘Khrista’ has been living with us, while she is studying in Australia. We are helping her achieve her dream of getting her education here, and eventually a permanent residency for her. Weekends are spent outdoors, mountain biking, walking in the mountains, National Parks or along the coast to enjoy the beauty of nature and exercising at the same time. Aside from career and family, we also have Couples for Christ Australia (CFCA) , of which we have been active members since 2006. We have gained friends in CFCA, and they have become family. We share a spiritual life and we are one in our goal of strengthening the Christian family. I can’t ask for anything more, except perhaps for the world to be back to normal. So we can travel to Cebu and other places we can only dream of when we were just starting out in life. So we can reconnect with friends and enjoy our golden years in comfort and contentment. Hopefully, one of those occasions will be our high school reunion.

I am proud to be the wife of my dedicated husband, Bill, and the mom of my wonderful kids – Sarah, Billy, and Jenny. I am equally proud to be the grandma of my awesome grandson, Ethan. I have two adorable tabby cats, Jasper and Amber. I enjoy reading current events and financial news which can be helpful in making trading decisions. Trading is my passion. It is definitely a challenge and requires a lot of hard work, patience, and discipline. I also enjoy gardening. It is so relaxing and fun to be with nature. Several fruit trees such as apple, crab apple, cherry, plum, and pear have been planted in our yard. Shrubs and perennials line our side yard. I love to watch wildlife. Living in a home surrounded by nature undoubtedly makes this feasible. It is exciting to see beautiful birds such as hummingbird, woodpecker, sparrow, chickadee, robin, Steller’s jay, American goldfinch, crow, raven, and bald eagle, to name a few. Several black-tailed deer frolic in our yard. Raccoons visit daily. Gray squirrels and Douglas squirrels are ubiquitous. Coyote, bobcat, opossum, great horned owl, barn owl, and bat have been sighted at night.

Some find it interesting that after 40 years, I have more or less kept my original weight. ( LOL ) More importantly, what I really “maintained” are treasured friends all these years. For that I feel very accomplished. After high school, my dream of becoming a doctor got fulfilled. Trained in Ophthalmology, my uncanny-eye went beyond a career to look into my vocation—and what I saw was a calling to a deep relationship with God, who is the reason for my joy, the motive for all my actions, and the pride of my life. 52

It’s been said a good life is a collection of good moments. I am blessed to have many such moments in high school. As we grew older I learned to be more clear of myself. I feel it is the simplest of things and not my greatest accomplishments that give me the best smiles. These are the things that have kept me busy: Work: grateful to have my patients life long trust. Photography: when it rains, always be on the lookout for rainbows Running: the pain you feel are your fat cells dying. Cycling: I am just one ride away from a good mood Hiking: be outside where wifi is weak Golf: gotta go clubbing. It’s truly good for the soul. Cooking: not sure if I trust a skinny chef Eating (of course): good food, good friends, good song... life’s essentials. I anticipate to feel new grateful and warm moments with Class ‘82 in 2022. I can’t wait. -Digs

Eurita Nunez Sargadillos Balazo Now living down under in this charming little country we fondly call Aotearoa... New Zealand to most people. Hubby and I have 2 boys and a girl, all grown up and pretty much living their lives, though sometimes we can’t help but meddle, somehow. Off high school, I did a degree in accountancy and became a CPA, eventually working as an internal auditor for a retail company. I loved the maths in college, but one thing’s for sure: people have very little love for auditors (read: hate) understandably I guess… and that wasn’t fun. Long story short, after more than just a few changes over the decades, I now work as a registered nurse here in NZ. Except on toxic days, I quite love this job. Things I enjoy during my free time these days include nature tripping, Netflix (a lot of it including Korean dramawith my daughter), long drives and travel with the family, and meeting friends for some catch up, a few laughs and a lot of eats. Back home, my single most favourite hobby was scuba diving which I now miss so much. I also love to play the piano though now I’m starting to lose my touch. These days, I just try to enjoy the simple pleasures and little things. If anything, this pandemic has taught us to appreciate a lot of things we used to take for granted. For as long as I know the hubby and kids (and extended family and friends) are safe and happy and I am able to pray to God for them, that gives me peace of mind and contentment. I look forward to some semblance of normalcy at least before July 2022 as I am so looking forward to attending our 40th anniversary reunion.

ELAINE FAITH J. TANEO, SSPS RELIGIOUS MISSIONARY MISSIONARY CONGREGATION OF THE SERVANTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (SSPS – SERVARUM SPIRITU SANCTE) MYSTERY Educated in public school throughout my formative years, I heeded God’s calling to the religious missionary life at the age of 23. Without the influence of any religious or spiritual person, my interest in entering the convent was a big surprise to my family. At the time, I felt guided and directed by some mysterious force or energy. Indeed, God silently sowed the seed of vocation in the recesses of my heart. THE CALL After obtaining a Business Management degree (at UP Cebu), and after completing a year of computer programming course, I worked for three years in the Systems Division (Microcomputer Department) of a bank in Makati, Manila. It was during this three-year work experience that God laid down the groundwork of, and divinely engineered my religious calling. The search for “something extraordinary” in my career-oriented ordinary life was getting louder and clearer. Was it God’s call? LOVE AFFAIR I thought that by entertaining many suitors, it would distract me from the mysterious call. But none of them fitted the blueprint of what I really wanted in life. As it turned out, the only love story that my heart and mind could ever imagine was the love affair with the Perfect One. For once I have known the “Beloved,” there was no turning back. MY FAITHFUL ONE It has been more than thirty years since I first entered the convent door. How did I survive? There have been many occasions of struggles and difficulties in my religious missionary life—experienced during the course of my varied mission assignments (apostolates in schools, hospital, finance, pastoral work in the mountains of Mindoro, information technology, communications, etc.) as well as in the religious community. And there were times when I thought of giving up on my calling. But the ONE who has been always faithful to me kept my wavering heart faithful despite my weaknesses and doubts. WHOLENESS & FULLNESS While on a foreign mission assignment in Europe, I was diagnosed of being sick of sarcoma (cancer of the soft tissue). The diagnosis shook me to my core, for the big C was like a death sentence. I decided to come home, a decision that turned out to be the best option. I did not undergo chemo treatment or radiation therapy, and chose the “alternative way”—Nature’s way. It has been 10 years since I opted for the natural way of body-mind healing. God gave me a second lease on life, blessed me with wholeness, fullness, and a new beginning. 62

My dad is one of the funniest, silliest people I know. But more than always making us laugh, he taught us to be competitive (He will play any game to win—from sports to scrabble. He even played jackstones with me and knew more tricks!), to always stand by what is right (He once argued for a long time with hotel staff until we were given an official receipt...lol), and to dream big (He is the reason why I ended up in UP Diliman and why I’m still studying until now. hehe) He is also an amazing doctor, a hard worker and a great source of inspiration. Happy Fathers’ Day, Dad! (From my son on Father’s Day, 2015)
