I am honored to be
Greenpeace Southeast Asia Board Chair at this important point in our organization’s history. 2011 marks the beginning of the next decade of environmental work in our region. Southeast Asia is changing—and we, its citizens, are at the cusp of this change. We are seeing a region now even more determined to strengthen political, economic and social ties; a region determined to carve its distinct identity in the international theater; a region now more conscious of its growing global importance. And amid all this, we, the citizens of Southeast Asia—a region which was in the past considered so fragmented in its diversity—are now being steadily pulled together by the inescapable threads of social media. And in the process, we are creating a real Southeast Asian community of people that is more powerful than the political and economic ties between nations within the ASEAN. It is against this backdrop that Greenpeace continues our work to campaign for solutions in the region. Our work remains relevant because we not only respond to the challenges that confront us. We also respond to the changing landscape of the region and the globe, and the needs and call of the times. We saw this phenomenon
last year across our campaigns in Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines, in successful online and offline campaigns. On the other hand, the need to protect the region from further environmental degradation continues to grow more urgent. In this annual report, I invite you to read on and see how—in our work with you to save forests, promote renewable energy, ensure sustainable agriculture and protect clean water—we value and nurture this support from communities on the ground and in virtual communities, both of which are today’s powerful venues where concerned citizens can build their strength and make their voices heard. Our community is you, and we are with you on the ground and in cyberspace. Together on these two fronts, we are building bigger and stronger communities in our shared vision to create a green and peaceful future. - Dr. Opart Panya

If in 2010, we celebrated Greenpeace
Southeast Asia’s 10th anniversary in the region, 2011 marked a turning point for our organization worldwide as we celebrated our 40 years of existence. Greenpeace began with volunteers and supporters—individuals like you who were brought together by an urgent need to participate and build a movement for positive action. We are proud to continue this tradition here in Southeast Asia. And we are proud too, because we believe that this strong tradition of citizen participation has been key to making us into what we are now: a trusted, effective and relevant movement. Looking back at 2011, we delivered key milestones for our campaigns, as you will see in the succeeding pages. We could not have achieved all these without you. You have moved with us on these issues: you’ve donated, you’ve joined our activities, helped out during our non-violent direct actions, signed our petitions, tweeted about us and, yes, even liked us on Facebook. Your financial support, given by individuals and not by corporations or governments, enables us to be trusted campaigners. We are effective in our work not only because you allow us to be free from commercial or political interests, but also because you were with us as we campaigned—you joined us.
And still because of you, our work has remained relevant, as we strive together to promote solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges, such as climate change. Being an advocate for positive change in today’s world is one of the most important things people can do to achieve social and environmental justice necessary for society to stop environmental destruction and end poverty. Your activism is what makes it possible for all of us to create an equitable and sustainable future for ourselves and our children. Which is why we believe that this annual report is about you, and how your contribution—as a donor, supporter, volunteer and cyberactivist—is vital not just to the work that we do together, but more importantly, to ultimately reaching that vision which all humanity upholds. So that even as your support has enabled us to come a long way from our beginnings, spurring us to achieve many victories, we find that even after all these years, we continue to go back to our roots: to you--and the strength that you give us whenever you lend us your voice. For the last 40 years, Greenpeace has been leading the fight to save the Earth. In
that time, it is our millions of supporters throughout the world including the tens of thousands right here in Southeast Asia—people like you—who empower us and keep us going. With you as our ally, we are able to create a greener, cleaner, safer and more peaceful planet. Your support has helped us get to where we are now. From our humble beginnings in 1971, we’ve grown into the foremost international environmental organization today — a financially independent global campaigning organization that is trusted, effective and relevant.

ours louder. Loud enough for the world’s policy and decision makers to stop and take notice. Because your support ensures our ďŹ nancial independence, we are able to act free from the pressures of political and commercial interests. This is why people listen to what we have to say. This is why we are a credible partner for communities and organizations who take our lead, collaborate with us, and multiply our efforts. And this is why we are able to inuence those who hold the reins of government and industry. Immediately following the Fukushima disaster Greenpeace called on President Aquino to abandon all nuclear power plans, replacing those plans with truly safe and renewable energy. These campaigns help ensure that the Philippines will achieve the target of 50% renewable energy generation by 2020.

Vigil for Japan Victims hoisted by Greenpeace to express solidarity with the victims of the earthquake, tsunami and the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima/Daiichi nuclear power plant.
Our Technical Briefing Paper called into question the safety of Bt Talong, an experimental eggplant modified with DNA from soil bacteria. With the support of organic farmers, we removed this eggplant from a field trial site in Laguna and sealed the experimental food crops in secure containers to prevent the contamination of neighbouring fields and the environment. Following our report and direct action, Department of Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala agreed that he will not allow the commercial release of Bt Talong during his tenure! greenpeace.org.ph | p 9

Sungai Sembilang Nature Conservation Park in South Sumatra. Greenpeace, together with representatives from the National Parliament and the Indonesian National Police, bear witness to the huge destruction of Indonesia’s natural peatland forest in Sumatra.
After Greenpeace’s supporters called on Facebook to like renewable energy, the social networking giant scrapped plans to have its first data center powered by coal, and instead announced they would be locating their first data center close to the Arctic Circle where it can use free cooling from the frigid local climate and be close to renewable hydropower in the region. That gets a big Like from us! p 10 | greenpeace.org.ph

Greenpeace is in the ibusiness of making a difference,
and we work hard not just to break new ground but also to reclaim and rebuild the one earth we all share. In 2011, we scored pivotal victories in the ďŹ ght to protect our waterways and save our forests. Millions of supporters and cyber activists around the world rallied behind our Detox and Barbie campaigns. Because of this massive groundswell of support, just weeks into the Detox campaign, Puma, Nike, Adidas and H&M all committed to eliminate toxic chemicals from their supply chains. We also effectively secured the commitments from toy giants Mattel and Hasbro to stop using packaging linked to the destruction of Southeast Asia’s vanishing rainforests.

Our Energy [R]evolution (E[R]) work is positively affecting how energy is produced and distributed in the country. Launched mid-2011, our E[R] Roadmap shows how we can transition to cheaper and safer renewable energy alternatives by 2020. Our E[R] Mindanao Summit was a landmark discussion about responding to the perils of climate change through the adoption of safe and renewable energy sources and energy efficiency practices.

and safe water, air, energy and food, Greenpeace touches the day-to-day lives of everyone and everything. Our work against genetically modified organisms protects the livelihood of local farmers and the health and safety of consumers. Our campaigns against climate change and toxic pollution are now all the more relevant in the face of persistent flooding in parts of Bulacan and Pampanga, and more frequent and severe typhoons.
Greenpeace activists arrive in the concession area of PT Arara Abadi, a supplier to the pulp division of Sinar Mas Group. Greenpeace's 'Tiger's Eye Tour' was launched to bear witness to the real condition of Indonesia's forests.
In just one of many activities in 2011, the Greenpeace Water Patrol team led Marikina's representatives from local government, student groups, barangay officials and community groups to bear witness to the state of their river and to call for the elimination of toxic discharges into the Philippines’ fresh water bodies.

GIVING THE
ENVIRONMENT
A VOICE Our environmental campaigns are characterized by our absolute commitment to independent action. Greenpeace can only take risks and confront others because of our political and economic independence – we do not accept funding from any government or corporation. Our independence gives us authority and credibility and allows us to take on polluters without fear of financial reprisals. The only person we answer to is you... and over 3 million other people like you who financially support the work we do. We thank all of these supporters. Because of them, and you, we are able to tackle environmental problems and promote solutions. And together, we are making a difference.

In 2011, Greenpeace Southeast Asia raised 160 Million PHP, an increase of 13% from 2010. This growth is attributed to more people joining us as regular monthly donors, and to existing donors who have generously increased their support. Greenpeace takes its responsibility for transparency and accountability very seriously. We always ensure the efficient use of funds given by the people who support us.
