Zwelethemba has “Good Stories To Tell” no matter what

I

’ve always heard locals believing that our community (Zwelethemba) was cursed by a blind man called “Babsie”, but I’m not sure is it the most renowned musician Babsie Mlangeni or some other Babsie. I guess some of the locals believed that myth but others like myself find it hard to believe something not proven. My question has always been how many doctors, lawyers, judges, nurses, and educators we’ve produced in Zwelethemba? Answer to question is so MANY even now young professionals like myself are making a mark of their own in uplifting this community. Crime, teenage pregnancy, alcohol abuse, violence against women and children, and unemployment – are still some of the challenges we’re still facing as a community, just like any community but that doesn’t take away the fact that Zwelethemba has Good Stories To Tell It is with great pleasure to produce and publish another exciting issue [3rd edition] of Grad Club Mag. A magazine that profiles young graduates from Zwelethemba (well-known as Vuvu) who’ve recently graduated and who some of them are still climbing the “long corporate ladder” and others are furthering their postgrad studies in various courses/disciplines.

To Mr. Athi Majija, I just want to say Thank you sir so much for your support and message on your Foreword. Out of your very busy schedule, you’ve managed to still take part in this special initiative. How can I forget the “main characters” in this issue? I would never forgive myself if I would not give another big Thank You to you graduates featured on this 3rd issue. Out of your busy schedules but you managed to schedule just an hour or 2 to meet up and share your stories. “Ukwanda kwaliwa ngumthakathi, apho nithatha khona makwande”. Lastly, I just want to say to all unemployed graduates searching for their first job, please fellow graduates let’s not stop hustling, let’s take it one step at a time (day-by-day) something will come up definitely maybe not now but it will eventually. I love and respect each and everyone of you because I’ve been there and I know how it is out there. NEVER GIVE UP!!

YOUTH MOVING SOUTH AFRICA FORWARD

T

his year, 2015 marks the 39th anniversary of the June 16 Soweto and other related uprisings. The uprisings tragically ended with hundreds of young people killed by the apartheid government when they protested against the imposition of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction. This day is popularly known as the Soweto Uprising or June 16. The reason for associating it with Soweto is because it is in this area where revolts began, gained momentum and spread to other parts of the country. Since this tragic incident, the day has been commemorated as June 16. The advent of the post-colonial and post-apartheid democratic political dispensation brought about the new way of looking at the day by rededicating it to the youth of South Africa – hence Youth Day/Month. The idea was to perpetuate the memory of those who died and suffered during this day as well as to carry on with their legacy and principles of selflessness determination and devotion that are necessary for success and growth for any society or nation. The commemoration of Youth Day was led by Department of Arts & Culture (DAC) and strong support from the NYDA and various government departments. The NYDA will continue to lead the co-ordination of the overall youth month activities, and once again with the support from various government departments. The success of the commemoration events depends on joint co-ordination and collaboration by the NYDA, government entities and Government Departments. During his 2015 State of the Nation Address, President Jacob Zuma declared 2015 as the year of the Freedom Charter and Unity in Action to Advance Economic Freedom. It is the year of going the extra mile in building a united, democratic, non-racial, non-sexist and prosperous South Africa. The 2015 Youth Month is highly significant as South Africa marks 60 years since the adoption of the Freedom Charter in Kliptown in 1955. The Freedom Charter declared amongst other things, that South Africa belongs to all who live in it, black and white, and that no government can justly claim authority unless it is based on the will of all the people. That was a powerful, visionary and reconciliatory statement which set the tone for the non-racial democracy South Africa has established.

Success occurs when your dream gets bigger than your excuses! It is a special privilege that I do not take lightly for me to have been asked to share some few thoughts with the Grad Club Mag readers. I think before I say anything, let me first congratulate the brains behind Grad Club Mag. Well done! you are indeed catalysts for change! In my view it’s like you have heeded the words of Gandhi: “Be the change you want to see in the world”  Gandhi Grad Club Mag, as a community-based magazine, it should not be limited to “fun magazine to read”, but rather a community development tool used to map, appreciate and recognise the endogenous assets of the community of Zwelethemba, in the form of human capital, diversity of competencies, expertise, professions and gifts. I hope you will extend its usefulness to a level where you create a database to trace, retain all these competencies for the benefit of developing strong, safer and developmental community, not only graduates but also young professionals to be able to plough back in a form of incentives to create bursar for prospective poor students of Zwelethemba Community. Grad Club Mag should pursue, to inspire hope to hopeless. Through recorded stories of success, Grad Club Mag should set the stage for young and old people of Zwelethemba to discover their lost dreams. To open limitless opportunities in which new futures can be conceived and constructed! This magazine must have power to propel young people to realize that ‘success occurs when your dream gets bigger than your excuses’. It must be used to create a culture of being excellent in all aspects of life. An educational space and a life changing magazine. be

In describing the nature of your new journey of professional life, Iyanla Vanzant contends that “Life is going to be a challenge. There will be rough times, difficult situations, things to fall into, major obstacles, mysteries to solve, wonders to unfold and promises to keep to yourself. Now that you know what to expect, prepare yourself. The only way to get to where you want to be is to do what needs to be done to get there”. Congratulations to all of you, Excellency is a journey not an event. Excellency does not come cheap, it is a culture that is to be inculcated and embraced. It is a principle that we should all protect against all odds. Because when we lose it, we lose also our integrity, reputation, above all we lose trust to those around us. Transformational and always carry inspirational and liberatiessage! In conclusion, I wish to congratulate all the graduates and those who will be graduating soon. I am sure you now agree with me that sacrifices do pay well, those sleepless nights and moments of isolation from friends, social network and family, simple because you wanted to be an EXCELLENT student NOT AN AVERAGE student. As you enter a new journey, which of being an employee or entrepreneur, always remember character and integrity is all that you need.

NOKUPHIWO JAMES

Nokuphiwa James is a young, fresh and ambitious Pioneer of Change

as a Call Centre agent for commission, but today this award-winning [2nd Best Student in Accounting] is an empowered Entrepreneurship graduate from CPUT.

I

n a community [Zwelethemba] where young people are increasingly vulnerable in facing challenges like unemployment, drug abuse, crime, violence against women & children, and HIV/ AIDS; here comes a fresh, young, and determined Pioneer of Change. Nokuphiwa James is a proud founder of Okuhle Stokvel and she is our local promising businesswoman. Background

Nokuphiwa recently graduated for Diploma: Entrepreneurship from the University of South Africa (Unisa). At first glance, to me Nokuphiwo appeared to be this down-to-earth, shy, and reserved person, but not until I spend 4 hours with her and her Mother chatting before our interview; only to found out she’s a fun, talkative person to be around. She used to sell products like life cover insurance, cell phone contracts, and did a bit of debt collection on the other side

8

After matriculating from Vusisizwe with “flying colours”, Nokuphiwo could only afford a 1-year course in English Communication for Business. Due to lack of funds to continue with her modules, she then worked for more than 2-years as a Call Centre Agent. In 2010, she joined the Golden Valley Casino as a cashier. “Funniest thing about me working at Golden Valley is the fact that most people thought I was going to an office environment based on the uniform [black pants and white formal shirt]. With only a year in the job, I just decided to resign” she recounts. Nokuphiwo @Varsity

In 2011 Nokuphiwo officially started her first-year as an Entrepreneurship student at Cape Peninsula University of Technology [CPUT]. Residing at South Point Residence [Woodstock], Nokuphiwo always enjoyed her so-called “Me-time” watching movies, reading books, and studying on her own. Two-years down the line, Nokuphiwo was faced with various obstacles on her way, and she had to take a break from CPUT with only one module left. In 2014 she was “back-in-the-game” and continued with her one module [Small Business Management 3] through Unisa. Early this year, Nokuphiwo’s diploma was one of thousand qualifications who were conferred by CPUT in its Autumn Graduation ceremony.

Okuhle Stokvel

Okuhle Stokvel is a social savings scheme which was initiated by Nokuphiwo 2 years back and she recruited 20 of her friends as members. Okuhle was officially established with a mission to raise and invest monthly contributions on various financial investment portfolios. Okuhle members contribute a fixed amount of R300 on monthlybasis [R6000 p/m] and this amount gets invested into a fixed account to generate interest. Last year only, Okuhle raised more than R80 000 and that amount was shared among members and part of it was kept for reinvestment. This year Okuhle is looking at mobilizing more members to join, especially young professionals like herself who wants to invest their monthly and reap great rewards at the end of the year. Some of Okuhle immediate plans are to register with the National Stokvels Association of South Africa [NSASA]. Secondly, collect pool money on monthly basis as usual and use it to purchase big items that can be used by the stokvel to generate an income for example, a marquee that could be rented out to the community for use on special occasions or lend money at small monthly interest rates (between 5% and 10%) to its members and they can repay it on agreed upon terms. Business

Aside from Okuhle, Nokuphiwo has identified a niche market in the region and decided to close the gap by establishing her own small micro enterprise. Nokuphiwo’s media

company is set to build itself a solid reputation as one of promising women-owned SMMEs in this municipality [Breede Valley]. She may not be rich yet – but her eye for business opportunity, tenacity, and entrepreneurial-drive sets her apart from others like a true businesswoman. “I still need support and mentoring to get more information and understanding of the sector and its challenges. I’m thinking of partnering with someone who knows the industry better than I do. Secondly try by all means to get media coverage to promote the enterprise in various media platforms like community radios, newspapers, and television especially government-funded television reality shows like Rize Mzantsi or Making Moves” said Nokuphiwo. Department of Trade and Industry [DTI] is committed to the Economic Empowerment of women as a main aspect towards mainstreaming women’s businesses within the broader South African economy. This means in simple English; women entrepreneurs like Nokuphiwo can now benefit directly in the following Department’s women-focused programmes; Technology for Business in Business [TWIB]  South African Women Entrepreneurs’ Network [SAWEN]  Isivande Women’s Fund, and  Ba’vumile Creative Fund 

Future Plans

Some of her career ambitions are to study further in Corporate Law or pursue her childhood dream of becoming a Fashion Designer. On the business side, she wants to see her company and Okuhle getting financially stable and independent in the future.

TREVOR ZENZILE

The Sky is the limit: Trevor defying all odds until to the End!

10

In high school Trevor was one of those serious students (focused too much on academics), and that was one of the reasons why he got elected as an SRC member in Grade 8. Because Trevor wanted to be an accountant in high school, and his accounting marks were low, the following year he resigned from the Council and focused more on improving his accounting. Eventually Trevor’s marks improved as the years went by and he officially matriculated from Vusisizwe.

After Matric

T

revor Zenzile (31) is a Public Management graduate from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). Having defied so many odds and emerged triumphant through it all, Trevor is a true role model and an inspiration to many young people in his community.

While most of his friends went to varsity after matric, Trevor had to deal with the challenge of trying to find work on the other side, as he couldn’t make it to varsity unlike most of his friends. After he matriculated from Vusisizwe, Trevor worked as a waiter at Spur for 2 years, and then moved to Direct Channel as a Call Centre Agent for 6 months. While trying to juggle selling funeral policies and making sales for a living, he was then motivated by Mr. Oupa Ruben Paulsen [primary school teacher and friend] to go and further his studies because of seeing his potential and ambition. As a go-getter, Trevor took his advice and in 2010, he enrolled at CPUT for a diploma in Management. Varsity

Background Born and raised in Worcester (Zwelethemba), Trevor is a go-getter, ambitious and humble person who comes from a small Christian family. In a household headed by a single-parent, Trevor is the oldest [of 3 children] followed by two sisters Ambesa [29], and Indiphile “Lhilhi” [14]. He started his journey like any kid from Zwelethemba from PJB Cona, and then went to Vusisizwe for his secondary education. Under the wonderful musical leadership of Ms. Nocwaka Sphondo, in primary Trevor was also involved in a school choir and became a soloist in senior choir in both Standard 4 and 5.

Just like any first-year student, being in varsity marked a big change of scenery in Trevor’s life. His 1st year was not easy as he was now faced with challenges like finding his way around campus, learning computer skills, and getting to know how things work on campus [i.e. what he can do, what is not acceptable, where he must go for classes, and so on]. “That was quite an experience and things were so tough for me that year. I still remember on my first assignment I was assisted by my cousin [Snazo Zenzile] as she was on her 2nd year and without her, I would have failed that assignment” he laughs.

11

As a student coming from a disadvantaged household with an unemployed single parent, Trevor is one of million students [beneficiaries] who have who have benefited directly from NSFAS. Government’s mandate to NSFAS is to provide loans and bursaries to students from poor and working class households who need financial assistance to pay for tuition fees, books and travel to and from campus. This financial support also covered his accommodation in Observatory at Catsville Residence for a period of 3-years without paying a cent from his pocket. While he was finding his feet on campus, Trevor was introduced to student politics by one of his “homeboys” Nkululeko Mangweni who was in high-ranks of PASMA then and that’s when his love and passion for politics started. Trevor joined PASMA as an active member and on the other side [Fridays and Sundays]; he was also participating in a church youth movement called Methodist Students Society [Methsoc]. As a person who loves his own space, you would find Trevor after class at his room watching movies or in a small corner in the library doing his assignments or studying on his own. Tough Times With only 1-year left to graduate for his Diploma, Trevor went through a very traumatic experience which he will never forget. After a wonderful weekend spent with his family in Worcester, when he returned to Cape Town for his study week before exams, his face started itching as if he was suffering from a light-stroke. Luckily, Aphiwe George [friend and roommate] called Trevor’s family and his sister who was a doctor at Groote Schuur Hospital. As he was getting seriously ill, he was then rushed to Groote Schuur urgently for proper medical care. For some period of time, Trevor attended dermatology treatments which helped so much with his recovery.

12

“After this traumatic experience I went through, it killed my confidence especially being around people. Truly speaking, since that I never wanted to go back to class with a face looking like this, but my Mother has always been pillar of strength in my corner and without her support and encouragement I don’t think I would have made it this far with education and it’s all thanks to her” says Trevor with tears in his eyes. After all the obstacles in his path, Trevor returned to CPUT in 2014 to finish his one module and he is now a proud Public Management graduate from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).

Working Experience As part of his Workplace Learning Programme, Trevor was one of 16 interns employed by Department of the Premier (WCG) placed at Recruitment & Selection Centre. His short-term contract ended in June with the Department, fortunate enough he was part of four interns selected for a 1-year contract extension. When his 12-months contract ended with the Department, he joined the Community Work Programme [CWP] office in Phillipi as an Administrator / PA to the Programme Coordinator. His job entailed monthly data collection, register consolidation and monitoring, and providing administrative support services [i.e. filling, minutes-taking and answering phone calls]. Trevor is planning to further his studies in either HRM or Business Administration. Advice Grab your opportunity with both hands and education is very important - it can open doors for you. It is true when they say “Education is the Key to Success”. You can do anything if put your mind into it not matter what! He concludes the interview.

he sets her own standards, drives her own destiny and she’s definitely not competing with anyone for anything. V.S.S award winning alumni (Lerato “Stimba” Nhlapho) is adamant to make impression and unleash her true potential at the City of Cape Town.

This award-winning student is originally from Zwelethemba and this where she grew up and spent most of her schooling years before she moved to Cape Town in 2008 to pursue her dreams. Lerato started her academic journey in Siyafuneka Primary School and then went to Alfred Stamper Primary. In 2003 she started with her standard 6 [Grade 8] in Vusisizwe Senior Secondary; where she

realised her full potential and attained awards to prove it. “My favourate highlights of high school would have to be lunch breaks; these times were always full of laughter and joy because of the fact that you’ll be eating, talking to your friends about anything and everything; unless of course none of you has lunchbox/money, in this case breaks were the worst. Second one would be the award ceremony that was hosted by the school on annual-basis. This event recognises students and celebrates their hard-work and determination on their studies. To me this ceremony was both beautiful and fulfilling because every year I knew my name would be called here and there” she smiles.

Varsity

After she matriculated from Vusisizwe, Lerato enrolled at University of Western Cape [UWC] in 2008. After she successfully completed her first degree, she then pursued her postgraduate qualification in Demography. This course entails mainly research with a specific focus on dimensions and dynamics of populations. Job opportunities in this field vary from government directorate, NGO’s and private companies (insurance companies, banks, marketing companies etc.).

“My short term goals are getting a permanent job, pursue my PHD and establish a program that will assist in the development of my community as a way of giving back. My long term goals are to start my own business + get married and have kids. In short, my dream is to live Le Good Life just like J.C Le Roux’s slogan” she laughs.

Workplace

Lerato is now on a contract with the City of Cape Town as an Intern placed at the Strategic Development Information (SDI) and Geographic Information System (GIS) Department. Lerato is part of those [employees] that supplies the City with the knowledge and information it needs to develop the strategic plans necessary to address Cape Town's wide ranging development needs. Such information is vital for the development planners and decision-makers as it enables them to use the City's resources wisely. Advice for 1st years

My advice to first year students and those [Matric students] that will be going to varsity next year; is to always have your priorities intact. The reason being in varsity you get so much exposure to lot of things and sometimes things you are not used to; and even worse this time you have noone checking up your whereabouts. Therefore it’s always good to have a clear mind on what you want, so that you don’t have regrets at the end. Secondly, make friends because you will need them especially if you stay on campus. Thirdly, do not isolate yourself - do everything that needs to be done [attend classes and sub-

KHUSELWA SILENGA NTSOMI

Khuselwa Ntsomi for 3 years has sacrificed her beauty-sleeps, social life, and endured until the final point of her academic race, which was graduation in this case. Today, she’s laughing all the way to the bank (monthly) reaping the fruit of her hard-work and determination. Background In an almost empty house [no parents] on Thursday evening, Khuselwa is with her sister Lathitha (11) chilling watching TV. Interviewing her few days after her 22nd birthday, I was lucky to be welcomed by a slice of cake and glass of lemon twist. This hard-working, goal-driven, and bubbly young woman reveals to us [Grad Club Mag] that she gets inspired by local successful individuals who she sees as her inspiration to her own life.

Khuselwa is a christian young woman who plays different roles in other people lives as a daughter, friend, cousin, colleague, and to others a role model. She started her secondary education from 2006 until 2010 in Vusisizwe Secondary. Thereafter she went to CPUT the following year to pursue her Diploma in Human Resources Management [HRM]. thini Mbolekwa (24) is a CPUT graduate in the field of nursing and she’s a proud mother to Nkanyiso. Athini is not only an inspiration to everyone who knows her but she’s also an outstanding young Professional Nurse to be employed by Medi-Clinic. With only 3 years in the field (nursing), I can tell you now in few years to come; she’ll be the force to be reckoned with! Grad Club team met with her a week after her birthday.

Athini attended Alfred Stamper Primary and thereafter she went to Vusisizwe High School. In high school, Athini has always been passionate about numbers and she wanted to study for Internal Auditing and Financial Accounting but after matric things didn’t go as planned. After matriculating from Vusisizwe, she enrolled at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology [CPUT], where she studied for 4 years and obtained her National Diploma in Nursing. Athini is on a 4 months pre-course programme for Theatre Techniques with the University of Stellenbosch. This pre-course prepares her for next year as she will be studying fulltime for her postgraduate degree.

Background Born and bred in Worcester [Zwelethemba], Athini Mbolekwa comes from a humble family of four sisters and she’s the youngest. Raised by a hardworking single parent, who was a domestic worker trying by all means to provide basic needs [i.e. food, shelter, and clothes] for her children no matter what. “We might not have grown up in a wealthy family structure but we had love as a catalyst that kept us going as a family. “For those who might be interested in nursing or any career in the healthcare, my advice for you is to have strong interpersonal skills and passion for helping people because as a GP/or nurse/or doctor you’re required to work long hours dealing with patience, so those skills and drive are a must” she concludes.

NOXOLO SURVIVING THE CORPORATE WORLD

B

eing given a chance to work for one of Mzantsi’s largest administrator of medical aid scheme is an opportunity of a lifetime, which Noxolo has grabbed with both hands. Noxolo Maqanda [27] is an HR assistant at Metropolitan Heath and Alumni of CPUT. Background

Noxolo Maqanda is a bubbly, self-driven, and confident young women who loves life and believes in education. Born and raised in Zwelethemba, Noxolo is a second-born child to Phumzile and Makgosi Maqanda [parents]. She completed both her primary and secondary education in Zwelethemba.

Her love for finance and business begun at standard 8 [Grade 10], when she chose commercial subjects like Economics, Business Management, Accounting, History and languages. In Matric [2007], Noxolo was awarded various awards for her excellent academic performance and also walked-away with 2nd Best Student of the Year award of Vusisizwe Secondary that year. “My parents never compromise on education, when it comes to us [their children] they always emphases if you need to be something or succeed in life you need education. For me that have always been that “inner-voice” that inspired me to push myself and reach my full potential at all times” she says.

In 2014 she did another internship at Metropolitan Health. After six months at the position, she was then appointed as an HR assistant. Her job entails providing HR support, undertaking various HR practices, like performance management, employment equity, culture and talent management to count few.

Noxolo @Varsity

In 2008 she was accepted at CPUT for a diploma in Human Resources Management [HRM] in short. “Campus life was very scary and exciting at the same time. First it was not easy adapting but as time went by I got used to it. I made friends which I still part of my life and I found myself in the process. Secondly, through various engagements with my classmates in assignments and presentations in class, I discovered my strengths and weaknesses that helped me a lot for my studies” she reflects. From first-year to her final year of study, Noxolo’s financial problems were solved by the National Students Financial Assistance Scheme [NSFAS]. This is a government loan that helps needy hard-working and determined students like Noxolo to realise their potential and achieve their dreams. Working Experience

With only 3 months left to complete her diploma, Noxolo joined the Cape Winelands District Municipaity as an intern for a period of 3 months as part of her [CPUT] Workplace Learning Programme. This internship programme allowed her to integrate her academic knowledge in HRM with practical work experience. Two years later, Noxolo completed her BTech in 2014 and she was appointed as an Intern by Department of Correctional Services for a period of 1-year.

Part of her short-term goals is to further her studies in HRM or any related management postgraduate course because she sees herself in a managerial position in few years’ time from now. LUTHANDO HEADING STRAIGHT TO THE TOP AND NO-ONE CAN STOP HER

L

uthando is a proof that even though the road to success may not be an easy one, with dedication and hard-work, success is inevitable. Sinazo Luthando Zenzile (25) is one of the young professionals working for Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) at Cape Town International Airport. Luthando was born in Worcester in the late 80’s on the 07 July. She is the youngest of four children and only sister and youngest to three brothers [Makhaya, Wonga, and Shaun]. After she passed Std 2 [Grade 4] from P.J.B Cona primary, she then relocated with her Mother to Cape Town where she finished all

her primary levels at Highlands Primary School. Just after she finished primary at Highlands, Luthando was accepted at Peak View High School (Athlone). When she was in Grade 10, Luthando became a Peer Educator through the YCMA; a role she devoted herself to until her matric. She has won several awards for History as her favourate subject. In matric, apart from being school prefect, she received the 2nd best award in Afrikaans, while she was expecting it in English. “Although I was not that much fluent in Afrikaans, but when it came to writing and presentations I did my best and I think that paid-off dearly. My Mother was so proud of me and I still remember that moment until this day” she explains. 23

Losing her Mother After matriculating at Peak View High School (Athlone) in 2006, Luthando had to stay home for the whole year as a result of not applying in time for varsity. Sadly things got tougher for her later in the year [November 2007] when she lost her Mother who suffered from cancer. In 2008, Luthando set at home for almost 8 months, angry at the world trying to deal with the traumatic experience of losing her Mother. As she Luthando at Ratanga Junction with friends. reflects, “I would sit everyday at my house and do nothing but just watch movies or sleep the whole day. NDYEBO ZWANE RECYCLING HIS WAY OUT OF POVERTY 25

then later in 2014 moved to his own house. Multi-Awards Winner

When I enter his house for the interview, I notice wall of achievements with his name on them 4 for being 1 of the best the Best Students in Vusisizwe with his name on them. From that point I knew this one [Ndyebo] was a “Book-worm” in high school. Ndyebo’s awards; 2nd Best in English (HG), Best in Economics (SG), Best in Business Economics (SG), and 3rd in Accounting (SG).

W

hile many sectors are bleeding jobs and companies are bulking under the strenuous economic waste recycling sector has been gradually growing and offering new job and business opportunities. From the dusty street of Zwelethemba; a community filled with high unemployment rate emerges a young and dynamic entrepreneur, who identified a gap in the recycling sector and “recycled” his way out of poverty. Background

Born on the 11 April 1988, Ndyebo Eddie “Mali” Zwane (27) was raised by a singleparent and he was the only child to his Mother. Growing up in a family house with older siblings worked in his advantage because he was getting spoilt as the youngest in the family. Ndyebo didn’t grow up like other kids (was not much into naughty stuff), but loved playing video games and watching TV. He completed his primary education [A – 5] in PJB Cona then went to Vusisizwe Secondary School from 2001 - 2005. He grew up most of his early years in Khuthwana [Fletsini], and

26

Then strikes a medal next to these awards and as it turns out Ndyebo’s excellent performance in Vusisizwe was not enough; he was also making airwaves outside the municipality [Breede Valley] as a Best Student. In June that year, Ndyebo won the Best Student award in Business Economics in the whole Western Cape and he was recognised by the Breede Valley Municipality with this medal. “Competition for these awards was not that much easy as it would seem but it was a healthy competition amongst friends and classmates. At some point it was not about us and awards, but us uplifting the standard and recognition of Vusisizwe as a Hub of Excellency…” he explains.

Varsity

While his peers went to further their studies at different tertiary institutions, Ndyebo decided to take a gap year. Later in 2006 he applied for the following year and fortunate enough with his results he was accepted for Diploma in Management. In 2009 he didn’t go back to register due to that he had to go to the initiation school [Ntabeni], and then went back in 2010 to finish-up. On his “comeback”, it wasn’t long enough Ndyebo was getting distinctions per subject, per exam in the following semester courses (i.e. Mercantile Law, Financial Management, Administrative Management, and EndUser Computing). In 2012, he officially graduated for his diploma in Management – a qualification that equipped him with functional and operational management skills and also to be able to apply management skills in his company [Mlingo’s Metals] and deliver a meaningful contribution to the economy of the country.

learn and know more about the business -side of recycling. After seeing a niche market for this kind of business in Zwelethemba, he then established his own recycling business called Mlingo’s Metals. A new 100% youth-owned recycle entity that specialises with buying and selling of copper, aluminium, stainless steel, and brass [bulk or small]. Future Plans

I might go to study further in Management with specialization in Finance Management. My immediate plans are to get more financial support to expand the business by getting my own transport [bakkie] because at this point I’m still struggling with transport for mobilizing and selling my scrap. Secondly, get the company registered with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission [CIPC], as I’m in a process of registration with SAPS for permit in order to expand this business to be like Swannies Scrap.

Life after Varsity

While many graduates struggle to find a job after graduate, Ndyebo was fortunate to find his first job as a Financial Advisor for a financial company. In September [2013], he left the company and 1-month later he joined the Department of Correctional Services as an Intern placed at Finance Office. (September 2014). While his 1-year contract with the DCS was coming to an end, on the other side he was looking for another job and also learning more about recycling business. Business

During holidays in June and December, Ndyebo was working part-time at Boland Scrap and that’s when he started to

Being born and bred in a disadvantaged community like Zwelethemba does not automatically means our dreams will be limited to our environment, Zolisa “Zoewy Ndamoyi [24] is another example that only the SKY is the Limit! Background Personally, I thought maybe Zoewy was named by his father Zolisa because he wanted a second son after Mawanda, but only to find out he wanted her to keep the Ndamoyi-household calm, as it means in Xhosa. Zoewy was born on the 22 November, 1991. She is the 3 rd child of four siblings, starting with her older sister Portia [31], followed by her brother Mawanda [29], and Sesethu [15] youngest to Zoewy.

Sometimes having your Mother as your principal comes with its perks, but not for her. Only advantaged she had was being the youngest one in Zanokhanyo Pre-School, and that allowed her to have all the attention she wanted like any other child. But all that ended when she went to Alfred Stamper Primary. This is where her love for music and sports started. High School

While Zoewy was still in Alfred Stamper, his brother Mawanda on the other side was raining accolades in Vusisizwe Secondary. Three years later around 2004, Zoewy started her standard 6 [Grade 8] on the same high school as her brother. “For me it was hard, I had so much pressure from the teachers because they wanted me to be like him, and everytime I performed badly on my marks they would always remind me of his achievements” she says.

On her 2nd year on campus, Zoewy started to get involved on extra mural programmes and activities like sports and students politics. When Athlone Residence won a trophy in 2010 CPUT Annual Mini-Olympics, she was one of the players who received medals for their superb performance against their main arrival. Besides playing shooter on a netball court, she was also an active member of SASKO’s Branch Executive Committee [BEC]. On her final year, she served an SRC member in Finance. “It is true that life as a student at university feels much more free, but in fact, university is a separate world with its own set of rules and requirements that must be learnt if you’re to make progress in your university career. When I reflect about my experiences, I think that’s what inspired me to continue until my final year” she said. After her completion of the programme and community service, Zoewy officially graduated in 2013 and she was now a registered Professional Nurse with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).

In Grade 10, Mawanda tried to convince her to choose Commerce subjects like he did, but Zoewy wanted to pursue her own path and she chose subject choices different from his. Although she chose different subject choices from him; but she didn’t lose some of her brother’s “brains” because she was ranked at top 5 in Physical Science, and number 2 in Consumer studies. Zoewy @Varsity

In 2009 after her matric, Zoewy was accepted by the Western Cape College of Nursing (WCCN) in association with CPUT for a 4year Diploma in General Nursing. Zoewy was one of nursing students [beneficiaries] selected by the Western Cape Government: Department of Health for a full-time study scholarship. This programme is targeting undergraduate and postgraduate students interested in pursuing a career in any health-related field.

Workplace

Future Plans

The South African government is the largest single employer in the country, and one of those employees is Zoewy. She is currently working at the as a Professional Nurse [Phola Park Hospital] in Mbekweni, Paarl. Part of her job is caring for and educating patients about their conditions, as well as establishing trust and building rapport with patients and their families. Also provide an optional, holistic, specialised nursing care with set standards and within a professional, legal framework as a Professional Nurse. Her job also requires broad knowledge and understanding of nursing legislation, related legal ethical nursing practices and framework, as well as labour legislation and relevant public sector policies, guidelines and protocols.

This year Zoewy is studying towards her BTech degree in Primary Health Care (CPUT). She is planning to further his studies next year with an MTech: Primary Health Care with focus in Occupational Health. Her long-term dream is to be a Chief Executive Office or establish a familyclinic of her own.

Motherhood Apart from her juggling long-hour shifts, and working public holidays and weekends, Zoewy is now officially a proud parent to an adorable baby Niyanda. In her new journey of Motherhood, at Grad Club Mag we would like to send good wishes to both Zoewy and her lovely baby.

THOZAMILE Sikwata climbing the ICT “Corporate Ladder” WITh COnfIdEnCE

W

hile many young people are initially attracted to the IT arena by “big fat-cheques” that comes with the job, Thozamile Buntu Sikwata is driven by his love and passion for technology. This newly-appointed Senior Java Developer of Accenture is planning to make his mark in the ICT Industry.

T

hozamile Sikwata was born and raised in Worcester (Zwelethemba). He comes from a small family of only 3 brothers – with him as the older one, followed by Sinethemba and Aphelele. His journey started at PJB Cona Primary, and then in 2004 went to Vusisizwe Senior Secondary. In 2009 he enrolled at CPUT for a 3-year diploma in Information Technology. Early this year [April], Thozamile graduated for his BTech

in Information Technology. “I didn’t have the luxury of private schools but I can safely say the education I got made me who I am today. I never undermined the processes but I made sure that the processes worked for me” he says. In 2009, Thozamile on his first-year was awarded a Mayoral Bursary by the Breede Valley municipality. This is an annual educational support program that helps needy students in this municipality who needs financial assistance. This bursary covered his registration fee and textbooks. The rest of his tuition fees were covered by the National Students Financial Assistance Scheme [NSFAS]. The following year Thozamile was one of 3 top students who were selected as beneficiaries of the Woolworths bursary program. This bursary also covered all his tuition fees including accommodation in his final year in ND: Information Technology.

Thozamile’s day used to start at 8:30 with morning classes and would end at 14:00. After that he would go to the library and do his classroom activities, assignments, and practice on his programming skills. On his spare time, you would normally find him in the pool house or student centre to clear his mind with friends. “I used to have a boring life when I was in varsity, I didn’t engage myself on any university activities but my only focus was on finishing my studies and start making a living. I don’t want to say that was a best thing to do but that did work for me and I don’t regret in doing that” he explains. Work Experience Thozamile formally started his working experience with a 6 months Internship programme at Woolworths. Just before his contract comes to an end, he was offered a fulltime position as an Analyst Programmer. After 4-years working at Woolworths, he then moved to Kalahari.com as a Java Developer. After six months he resigned and moved to Accenture as a Senior Java Developer. Accenture is a successful global management consulting, technology services and outsourcing company with a proud South African legacy. With over 40 years operating in South Africa, Accenture has helped transform local blue chips and government departments into high-performance organisations. Business On the other side, Thozamile is a founding member of Tsogang Investment Holdings (Pty) Ltd. A new youth-owned private company with 100% black ownership. Thozamile explains further about the entity, “We [founders] started TIH as a platform for black professionals to pool funds together with a bigger objective in investing in different investment vehicles and ultimately gain control. Our belief is that with our collective intellectual capacity, we can do better; we can ultimately own production, therefore playing bigger role in the growth of SA economy”. From Grad Cub’s side, we would like to wish Thozamile and his partners’ greatness on their new venture.

Future Plans Thozamile’s plan for now is to complete his Masters’ Degree in Business Administration [MBA] at age 28, and hopes the Almighty will give him the strength and the courage to pursue it. He also sees himself owning a franchise store one day and he would love to see Tsogang Investment Holdings taking control of owning businesses in SA.
