World Food Day (WFD) is celebrated annually around the world on 16 th of October in honor of founding the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 1945 as a organization to deal with global food and agricultural issues.
The aim of the Day is to heighten public awareness of the world food problem of absence, scarcity and strengthen solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty.
The theme for this year’s World Food Day therefore embraces the finding of the Special Rapporteur in ensuring that the agricultural sector adopts “sustainable food production systems to ensure food security and nutrition’.
South Africa will be celebrating this year’s World Food Day in the context of highlighting the contribution of indigenous foods sourced from indigenous forests and also advocating for adoption of ecological farming systems.
South Africa’s food supply is highly industrialized and dominated by capital intensive production systems and big agribusinesses. In South Africa, about 99% of the food is produced by 3% of the farmers and distributed by four retail chains which control 55% of the food retail industry.
