4. St Cuthbert’s Garden Village Competition a.) Historical

Listed building is an important heritage of a place to represents its culture and historical development. Listed buildings at the site would be conserved with proper maintenance for its architecture style. The high concentration of listed buildings at Brisco and Carleton including Wooden Walls, Brisco Hall, Brisco Farmhouse, Langarth, St Ninian’s Well. Carleton is another town with high concentration of listed buildings, Brisco View, Carleton Farmhouse and barns adjoining, Croft House Petteril Vilas, The Cottage, The Beeches, Farm Buildings To East Of The Beeches, Orchard House, which provides it with the potential to develop as heritage town.

b.) Habitate

There are deciduous woodlands located at Durdar, Brisco and Carleton which would be maintained. A large piece of land belongs to Special Area of Conservation with the River Caldew and existing cycling path within the SAC. It offers the potential for country park development near the SAC area with the cycling path as the connecting point to the site. The existing cycling path would be extended to the Caldew country park and the St Cuthbert’s Greenway for the proposed design plan. People visit the country park and cycling at the park to the SAC area to enjoy the natural beauty of the landscape. Habitat within the SAC should be protected and hence to avoid surrounding development to bring negative impacts to the area.

c.) Agricultural Land Use

Mostly covered by Grade 3a, 3b and Grade 4 Agricultural land use. The arable land would be maintained for its high- quality agricultural value. According to Carlisle Local Plan, Carlisle is a founding member of food cities network (It strives to create a city for good food flourishes). The siting of the agricultural land use is in between the existing settlement and the proposed new settlement of St Cuthbert’s Garden Village. The agricultural land does not only provide food benefiting its economic development but also serves as a New Innovative Green Infrastructure Practice. It helps to reduce surface runoff and chance of flooding to the built area. It also reduces carbon footprint and the negative impact of global warming. The beautiful greenery scenery is an asset to the public.

M6/42 Junction

The major existing vehicle paths are Durdar Road, Brisco Road, Newbiggin Road and the M6/42 Junction Area to serve the site and connect it to the surrounding area. According to Local plan, the M6/42 Junction would be a strategic employment area. The new proposed “South Link Road” would be connected from Cummbersdale, Durdar, Brisco to the junction area with pedestrian and cycling path to promote green transport system in association with vehicular path. Bus service would be served horizontally and vertically along the site to access the surrounding area and the strategic employment area.

St Cuthbert’s Garden Village: Spatial Strategy The design concept relates to the 9 Principles to promote the St Cuthbert’s Garden Village to be a sustainable town to live, work and gather with high living environment with unique sense of place. The concept of Garden City is applied in the design plan of the St Cuthbert’s Garden Village with quick access to the open space and green park. The high value agricultural land is maintained as innovative green infrastructure connecting the St Cuthbert’s greenway to provide beautiful scenery to the public and conserve the environment by reducing carbon foot print. High quality living standard at the St Cuthbert’s Garden Village is aimed to be achieved by the sustainable development proposed. Country Park is divided into zone1 and zone2. As zone 1 is located within the Specific Area of Conservation, minimum development is proposed. Recreational activities such as cycling and sailing at the River Caldew are offered in zone 1. The existing cycling path within SAC connects to the proposed cycling path and connecting to the Zone 2 of the country park. The major recreational activities, camp site, resort and observation tower are located at zone 2. People can enjoy the beautiful landscape of the St Cuthbert and the arial view of the surrounding area. The “Guidance for Outdoor Sport and Play Beyond the Six Standard” is considered when planning the spatial strategy of Green Park, LEAP, Outdoor Sport Park and MUGAs, with 700m walking distance to the MUGAs, 1200m walking distance to the Outdoor parks and LEAPs. The distance between town center to the recreational area ranges from 400m to 1200m (5mins to 15 mins walk). The proposed highest density of residential development is 50dph, with 35dph as, medium density and 25 dph as the lowest density. The highest density of residential development is located at Durdar (District Town), Carleton and the area next to the M6 and 42 Junction area. According to local plan, the M6 and 42 Junction area is suggested to be a strategic employment area. Business Park design is proposed to attract investor to come to set up office.

High quality of life is ensured by proposed landscape design and planning. People can access green park, employment area and other infrastructure such as sport park, sport stadium and health center with reasonable walking distance. The community can spending leisure time at the country park, doing sport, have leisure walk at the green park or meeting friends at the town center. Healthy living environment is highly addressed and hence green Transport System is proposed. The “South Link Road” is proposed crossing the Cummersdale, Durdar, Brisco to Carleton. Pedestrian and Cycling path are planned in association with the vehicular path to promote the healthy living environment. Environmental sustainability is another focus of the design proposal. To achieve biodiversity gain, a biodiversity research center is proposed which does not bring positive impact to the environment but also creates high-skill job to the public. Reedbed system is implemented as part of the SUDs infrastructure to tackle the problem of the River Petteril. The reedbed system creates a beautiful view along the river, a wooden trail is proposed to allow the public to enjoy the view. Recreational activity such as cruise is proposed to attract visitors.

NFT (Non- Fungible Token) is a popular trend nowadays. Space Park on Virtual Land is my first NFT landscape design. The design concept aims at creating a place for people to gather, relax and spending holiday. Metaverse is a hot topic recently which including high technology and Metaverse to allow people to gain an exciting virtual experience. People can enjoy the facility of VR at Space Museum with virtual experience in different theme such as Virtual walk in the Jupiter. To impress the visitors, the ariel walkway outside the Space Museum allows people feel like walking in the Moon and enjoying the panoramic view of the Park.

NFT: Space Park on Virtual Land It is my first NFT of landscape design, Space Park on Virtual land, published at Open Sea. Technology wall is located at the main entrance with 3D text to welcome the guests. Visitors can check the schedule the Shows of Today by swiping on the technology wall. Starting from ticket office and ‘Space Galleria’ located at the right part of the park. Space galleria is 3-floor terraced buildings for exhibition of drawings, sculptures and model making. Fine arts displayed at the galleria relate to Space and Metaverse. Moving to the centre of the park which is the Space Museum in form of sphere with an ariel bride along the museum, it allows visitors to experience walking in the ‘Moon’ and enjoying the panoramic view. An outdoor musical venue is located at the end of the waterfront walkway. Floating bar is located at the left for visitors to relax and rest. After spending a day in the Space Park, people can rest and closely enjoy the sea view by having drink at the bar.

Behind the technology wall is the ticket office represented by a 2floor L-shaped buildings. A triangular square is located at the central with the use of Paver Flagstone and Granite as landscape enhancement. Steps and layers are the main design element to be used at the entrance area, a 3-floor terraced design is used for the design of Space Galleria. Zero carbon is the global target to be achieved by 2050. Solar panel is installed to encourage the use of renewable energy. Apart from the lawn in front of the Space Museum, green roof is introduced as it is an important green infrastructure (GI) to combat global warming. Greenery serves as a ‘Sponge’ to absorb carbon dioxide and it can fully utilize the space for GI implementation.

NFT: Space Park on Virtual Land

Major material of the space Museum is xxx stone as its texture can represent the sense of ‘The Moon’. The ariel walkway along the Moon is built by copper, the high reflective rate and shinning effect of copper makes the ariel walkway looks like a galaxy in the space. Blue is the major colour of the ground area with circles in different sizes represents different planets around. The colourful ground aims to emphasis the theme and character of the Space Museum. A large lawn is in front of the museum for people to have an enjoyable walk. Use of colour contrast, blue and green, is another landscape enhancement. Visitors can have a leisure walk or having picnic at the lawn.

Outdoor musical venue is located next to the Space Museum at the end of the waterfront walkway. People can walk out to the sea via the triangular form walkway along the floating bar. There are steps along floating bar with major material is glass and mosaic tile in blue colour which shares the same colour tone of the sea to creates the sense of connection and infinity. Glass has high transparent rate which makes visitors to feel like walking on the water. Floating bar is designed with marble dining table to represents sense of elegance; the beautiful sea view creates a harmonious atmosphere. After spending a day playing at the park, people can rest and relax, it is also a great place to meet friends.
