Spring is here, and we are well into 100 Years of Music at Grace Cathedral, our exciting centennial celebration of our Choir of Men and Boys. We have enjoyed wonderful concerts from the Gustaf Sjökvist Chamber Choir from Sweden, the choir of New College, Oxford, and the talented young cellist Joshua Roman. Anne Patterson, our resident artist, has produced a beautiful installation, Graced With Light, which hangs in the nave. We look forward to hearing our Choir of Men and Boys’ spring concert on June 9, when they will preview their repertoire for their tour to Spain this summer. Also in June, we will be partnering with San Francisco Opera to discuss, at two of our Forum sessions, the background to their newly commissioned opera on Mary Magdalene. Please join us for conversations with distinguished scholars Kate Cooper and Rebecca Lyman, and the composer Mark Adamo and Sasha Cooke, the mezzo-soprano who sings the part of Mary Magdalene. As our strategic planning proceeds, the arts and education remain central to our mission, along with our daily worship and service to the whole community. Our new mission statement declares: “Grace Cathedral shares the love of God through worship, education, service and the arts.” We continue to be a house of prayer for all people, living out a vision of Christianity as compassionate, creative, intellectual and inclusive. Thank you for being a part of the Grace Cathedral community. I so much appreciate your support of all that we do here, and I look forward to seeing you at one of the many spring events that you can read about in this third edition of Grace Notes.

Anne Patterson As a part of the 100 Years of Music at Grace Cathedral festivities, visual artist Anne Patterson created Graced With Light, a stunning, music-inspired installation that incorporates Grace Cathedral’s vaulted ceiling arches. Ms. Patterson’s residency was launched on March 11 at Seeing the Voice: A Synthesis of Light, Color, and Music, a one-night premiere event with cellist Joshua Roman. During this collaborative event, Roman introduced his new solo work for cello and, during the final piece of the evening, guests experienced Grace Cathedral’s marvelous acoustics from pillows on the side aisles. Visit Grace Cathedral throughout the spring to experience Graced With Light for yourself.

A Centennial Celebration of the Grace Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys

Throughout 2013, we celebrate 100 Years of Music at Grace Cathedral, the centennial anniversary of the Choir of Men and Boys. The festivities continue with performances by the Pacific Boychoir Academy, renowned organists, and our Choir of Men and Boys before they depart for their summer tour of Spain.

Organ Recital Series Selected Sundays, 4 P.M.
This 110-voice men and boys choir performs Rachmaninoff’s All-Night Vigil (Vespers) in its entirety. Vespers was originally written for a choir of men and boys and this is a unique opportunity to hear this masterpiece performed in the cathedral’s incomparable acoustic setting.
We present concerts by accomplished musicians playing one of America’s finest organs, our 7,466 pipe ÆolianSkinner organ. Suggested donation of $10.

This bon voyage concert features the program the choir will perform during its tour of Spain, including works by Victoria and Morales, Copland and Sowerby, Stanford and Leighton, and familiar spirituals.
