Grace Notes Grace Cathedral spring 2014

DEAN’S MESSAGE Dear Friends, I do hope you all had a very happy and blessed Easter.
This spring, we continue our exploration of our sustainability theme, and are delighted that Bishop Marc will be teaching a class on ecology and theology on Wednesday evenings (April 30–May 21). We are also pleased to announce that we will have an intern from the Environmental Defense Fund, assessing all the cathedral close buildings to see how we can become greener. This future work will build on the remarkable achievements — including solar panels on the cathedral roof — of the long tenure of our retiring Canon Sacrist, Kathy Kirkpatrick. We celebrate Canon Kirkpatrick’s wonderful care of the cathedral buildings over 28 years in this edition of Grace Notes. This spring, too, I will be going on sabbatical for May, June, and July. It is fitting that my three-month sabbatical has been earned as we come into the Year of Sustainability. The biblical concept of Sabbath is right there at the beginning of the first book of the Bible, Genesis, when God rested on the seventh day. Such times of rest give us important periods of refreshment — and thereby sustain us. I will be spending time doing research in several archives, working on my new book on spirituality and mysticism in the early twentieth century. There will be no spring Forum because of my absence, but the Forum will return in September. Graced with Light, the art installation over the nave, informally known as “The Ribbons,” has been enjoyed by thousands of people. It is finally time to take the ribbons down, and that will happen on May 7. Do take the opportunity, if you can, to enjoy this remarkable art installation before then. I look forward to seeing you all when I return from sabbatical at the end of July. Warmest wishes. The Very Rev. Dr. Jane Shaw B oa r d o f T r u st e e s The Rt. Rev. Marc Handley Andrus

This year at Grace Cathedral we are especially exploring the theme of sustainability. Over the past few months we have enjoyed stimulating and challenging Forum conversations with many leaders in the areas of the environment and food, and we launched this Year of Sustainability at our very successful gala, Carnivale. We are so grateful, as always, for your support and we could not do all that we do without your wonderful generosity throughout the year.

Greening Grace Cathedral This summer, in partnership with Interfaith Power & Light, an Environmental Defense Fund Climate Corps Fellow will help create a long-term plan for the cathedral’s greener future. The fellow will recommend reductions in water and energy use, alternative energy sources and new sustainable practices. Carnivale donors have given over $100,000 to help fund the plan. This June, Kathy Kirkpatrick retires after 28 years with Grace Cathedral. During her time as Canon Sacrist, she directed facilities management and oversaw several projects that carried out the cathedral’s ongoing vision to be more sustainable. Of her legacy, Kathy is most proud of the construction of Chapter House, the plaza and front stairs and the outdoor labyrinth in the late 1990s. It’s important, she says, because “this marked a big transformation in the life of the cathedral, in terms of the buildings and also the activities that go on in and around them.”

landscaping and less overall water use
While Kathy will continue to be a devoted member of Grace Cathedral, her retirement from the staff is the perfect occasion to acknowledge her enormous contributions. For 28 years, she has ensured that Grace Cathedral is a welcoming, safe and sacred space for our congregation, community and neighborhood, one with a vibrant and sustainable future. Thank you, Kathy.
Opening Soon
A Greener and More Gracious Community Kitchen We will soon realize a vision of our Dean, Trustees, nearly 100 special donors and our friends at Boulette’s Larder when we reopen the newly renovated Chapter House kitchen. The modernized space, built to greener standards, will serve more people in need through our transformative outreach programs. It is also more functional for other vital purposes: life’s special events, educational programming, community building, and for generally enjoying the experience of food together. Thank you to all who have made this possible. The new space will be completed this summer with opening events planned for the fall. GRACE NOTES spring 2014 | 5

LETTER FROM BIRMINGHAM JAIL On March 10, 2014, actor, playwright and Grace Cathedral Trustee Anna Deavere Smith (pictured above) joined renowned violinist Robert McDuffie (pictured left) at Grace Cathedral for a sold-out performance of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter From Birmingham Jail, a landmark document of the civil-rights movement. $250,000 Gift to Interfaith AIDS Memorial Chapel Grace Cathedral has received a $250,000 gift from the estate of Thomas Dross, a longtime resident of San Francisco and benefactor of AIDS-related causes, who died in 2012. The gift will be used to refurbish the Interfaith AIDS Memorial Chapel inside Grace Cathedral. The Ven. Anthony Turney, who is Deacon for the Arts at Grace Cathedral and was integral in the process of developing and dedicating the chapel, said, “This gift is so important because the cathedral can further make the chapel the space it deserves to be — a true memorial to all those who lost their lives, including 170 members of the cathedral congregation, and a place of prayer and solace that ministers to the living.” Built out of Grace Cathedral’s AIDS ministry and the leadership role the cathedral played during the AIDS crisis in the 1980s and 1990s, the Interfaith AIDS Memorial Chapel was dedicated on November 30, 2000 and stands as a powerful tribute to all those affected by HIV/AIDS. The chapel houses renowned artist Keith Haring’s altarpiece entitled “The Life of Christ” (pictured above) and panels of the AIDS Quilt, which have been hung in the cathedral since 1988.
