DEAN’S MESSAGE

WINTER HIGHLIGHTS With this second edition of Grace Notes, it is my pleasure to wish you all a very happy new year.

ROBERT TAYLOR

This year, Grace Cathedral is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Choir of Men and Boys, and we hope you will join us to hear much splendid music. We will be launching our centennial music year at Carnivale, a marvelous party in the cathedral, at which Linda Ronstadt will be speaking about the power of music, and our Choir of Men and Boys will be singing with mezzo-soprano Susanne Mentzer. Other winter highlights include a concert by the premier Swedish Gustaf Sjökvist Chamber Choir, and a residency by the world-famous men and boys choir of New College, Oxford, performing Bach’s St John Passion on Good Friday.

I am delighted to announce our 2013 artist in residence: Anne Patterson. Anne is a New York based visual artist, who works with many symphonies and musicians. Come hear her speak at The Forum on March 10: Anne is just one of an exciting line-up of speakers in the winter series of our flagship education program at 9:30 on Sunday mornings. In this season too, as we work on the detailed content of our strategic plan, we continue to think about the important role of cathedrals in the 21st century. Cathedrals are, officially, growing — by about 3% a year according to a recent report published in England. Grace Cathedral’s attendance increased by 10% in 2011, so we are proud not only to be with the trend, but ahead of it. Cathedrals reach out to the whole community, and by their beauty, their openness and varied offering of events, they readily appeal to many, including those who call themselves ‘spiritual but not religious’. I will be lecturing about the history of cathedrals, and their place in the world today, on Wednesdays in Lent at 6 p.m. — come and enjoy a simple supper, learn about the varying fortunes of cathedrals over the centuries, and converse with others. And come, too, to hear the Dean of Salisbury talk about medieval cathedrals, at The Forum on February 24th! I am so grateful that you are a part of the Grace Cathedral community, and I deeply appreciate your support of the cathedral’s work and ministry. I look forward to seeing you at the cathedral this winter. Warmly,

The Very Rev. Dr. Jane Shaw Dean
