On November 7, 2020, Vice President Joe Biden became President Elect of the United States, beating incumbent Donald Trump. Many previously conservative “red” states flipped to liberal “blue,” surprising many.
Except for those of us who actually live there.
This is not to say that “red” states and small towns are bastions of progress. They aren’t. But to paint this population with a large brushstroke ignores the important work of activists in rural areas. Indeed, many “progressive” pundits who praised “battleground” states, such as Pennsylvania and Georgia, for flipping blue for Biden gleefully watched these states succumb to the Covid-19 pandemic only months earlier. All because they didn’t agree with their leadership.
So I asked people in these “battleground” states: what are your feelings about the 2020 election? About politics in your hometown? Have you made art about it?
