about me...

“

Landscape architects have the ability to connect people to nature and to each other by designing for positive experiences that ultimately bring joy. I believe that great design is pleasing and has the power to inspire. I feel inspired in thoughtfully designed spaces and I want to continue to create those experiences for others. I believe that every design should tell a story, and I am excited by the idea of using my skills to tell the story of an environment by way of great design.

RESIDENTIAL DESIGN I have always admired residential landscape design and appreciated what it can bring to a home. In residential design, I believe our goal as designers is to connect the indoors and outdoors and create a relationship between the resident and the outdoors around them. It is very important to me to have functional and beautiful outdoor spaces in which to live. Creating enjoyable places that encourage time outside is something that can benefit all residents in bring them joy.

dawne residence ATHENS, GA This residential design is based on the client’s desire for a cozy and comfortable atmosphere within a contemporary design scheme. The client wanted an easy, open and fluid indoor-outdoor connection, as the client places high importance on enjoying much of her time outdoors. To enable this vision, there are several different types of outdoor spaces that conform naturally to any desire to be outside, whether it be relaxing and admiring the landscape, dining with friends and family, sitting around the fire, or playing with her dog in the yard. Per request, the design is strategically laid out in a way that the client can feel completely secluded and easily avoid interaction with the guest when she wishes. However, the client also wanted an area where visiting family or friends can come together when they are staying in the guest house. A lovely and central outdoor dining room acts as the confluence between the two dwellings for people to enjoy each other’s company.

The design maintains the modest and homey character of the surrounding neighborhood while seamlessly incorporating contemporary elements that give the residence a unique twist. The depressed dining room and fire pit is a sleek yet cozy addition to the backyard that creates an enjoyable gathering point for people coming together.

URBAN DESIGN After observing urban design in cities all around the world, I have gained a deep appreciation for how the design of an urban area can reflect its social character.. I believe that designhas the ability to influences our behavior and determine how we react with an outdoor space as well as each other. In the projects that I have had the opportunity to work on, I have focused on how to design for human to nature interaction as well as human to human interaction.

13

serpentine square SAVANNAH, GA Each designer in the studio was randomly assigned a distinct form that would lead their design of this plaza. Each student used their form to interpret the use of the space in different ways. My assigned form was the continuous curvilinear corridor, in which I used to inspire my design of this urban square. I took this form and translated it into ideas thinking both horizontally and vertically. I began by coming up with a design vision for a space inspired by such forms, and created a whimsical and creative design sollution for the concrete urban square.

15

The Curvilinear Form Inspired by my assigned form, the continuous curvilinear corridor, my goal was to design an urban plaza that is joyful, whimsical, thought-provoking and pleasant. I created a design that provokes nature’s penetration into an urban plaza by the use of undulating and continuous free-flowing curvature.

17

freedom among the concrete While the urban square area is mostly paved concrete, it exudes an essense of freedom as natural elements and organic forms penetrate the concrete. Flowing tall grasses and hanging succulents creep there way across edges. Users of the plaza will feel inspired and curious by the udulating forms throughout the plaza. A repurposed airstream food truck acts as a focal point to bring people into the plaza and promote social interaction. While the site isn’t terribly large, the design offers a variety of different spaces that facilitate opportunities for both active and passive activities. Whether it be meandering the plaza, admiring the ocean views from the raised turf ampitheatre, enjoying a meal at the picnic tables, or quietly sitting and listening to the sounds of running water, there is always a reason to have an enjoyable experience in the Serpentine Square.

terrapin beer co. ATHENS, GA

This collaborative project was an outdoor brewery redesign of Terrapin Beer Company in Athens, GA. Our team of 3 designers worked with founder of Terrapin, Spike Buckowski, to capture the vibe of what he imagines the true “Terrapin Experience” to be, and how we could design the outdoor space to facilitate that experience. We set out to convert the brewery’s vast, open outdoor lawn into an activated, space where memorable and unique experiences are made. We used the culture of Terrapin Beer Company and their origins in Grateful Dead motifs to inspire our design. Our goal was to create a fun, laidback, and adventurous environment for customers to experience, and associate that great experience with the great beer they are drinking.

21

The Train Car Bar The Terrapin train car bar is an idea to create a unique point of interest and an opportunity to elevate the experience of being served beer; one that is unique to the experience at Terrapin Beer Company. Contributing to the story of Terrapin, the train car is an ode to the orgin of the brewing company, which stems from the train motif of The Grateful Dead’s 1997 album, Terrapin Station. This bar activates an area that is currently unused, empty space. Not only does this creative bar provide more optional space to serve beer on busy days or during big events, it also acts as a unique attraction that will advertise the brewery and attract more customers who are looking for a fun and unique brewery experience.

23

Athens’ biggest backyard Our goal in redesigning Terrapin Beer Company was to create an attractive and usable space for people to enjoy yearround. By dividing their large and vast existing lawn into separate distinctive areas, we created a greater diversity in usage options, without creating physical barriers. Each new space is intended to make the user feel a certain way in each space, whether that be seclusion, warmth, connection, or simply joy. Each area is linked via a large lawn that, along with the planting scheme, serves as connective tissue, making the individual areas come together into a single, cohesive space. Several focal points were added to the site so as to draw users to each area and create a sense of movement and excitement upon discovering certain design elements, making for a more memorable experience. By bringing people together in a unique and unforgettable way, our plan brings diversity and adventure to Athens’ Largest Backyard.

CAMPUS DESIGN Having the opportunity to study campus design as a student is unique in that I posses a unique perspective into how the outdoor environment of a campus can affect the behavior and well-being of us students. I was challenged with finding ways to use the landscape as a space where hard-working students, faculty and staff find joy amidst their busy lives. Campus design also challenged me to think of how the landscape relates to not only the architecture and style of a particular campus, but also the subject of study in which the area might reflect.

27

uga south campus ATHENS, GA

Our team of 4 designers collaborated in redesigning the University of Georgia’s South Campus. We studied how the space was used during school hours and created a vision of how the area could become even more functional for students and faculty, as well as how we could design for a more aesthetically attractive area to be in. We identified spaces that could be improved or used differently and assigned a space to each team member to focus on. I focused on the redesign of D.W. Brooks Drive into a pedestrian only path, and repurposing the adjacent parking lot into greenspace.

29

Brooks Mall Extension Lawn For my individual focus of this project, I dealt with the redesign of D.W. Brooks Drive. To address the issue of pedestrian safety and traffic throughout this road, I redesigned the drive into a wide, pedestrian-only walk, inspired by the UC San Diego Library Walk. By using an allĂŠe of trees along the pedestrian walk, we create a clear linear axis connecting two major spaces of our design, the food truck court and the oval lawn, while also providing enclosure, security, shade, and greenery for a pleasant experience moving from one space to another. By removing the parking lots in front of Boyd, we increased green space and created recreational areas for sitting, studying, playing, and other activities.

31

recharge Our solutions serve to help students and faculty recharge by recharging the materials and spaces around them. By removing unnecessary parking lots and turning them into green spaces, we hope to revive a community environment. A food truck court behind Connor Hall re-purposes the roads and parking lot into a space for students to refuel, promote social interaction, as well as sponsor local businesses. The rooftop garden and redesigned oval concept helps students re-energize while studying in the nearby science library. The re-purposed paths relocate students through the Brooks Mall Extension with ease, uniting spaces through new focal points and landscape features like the tree allĂŠe that was once Brook Drive. Our team hopes to recharge the student body by recharging the campus around them.

PROFESSIONAL WORK While finishing my time studying landscape architecture at the University of Georgia, I had the opportunity to work as a designer for a residential design-build firm in Athens, GA. This section showcases some of my work with Butler Landscape Design and other projects that I have taken on myself.

35

vangelder residence HULL, GA

In hopes of bringing the favorite parts of their old home in South Florida, I designed a backyard oasis that this retired couple could enjoy and make new memories in their new home outside of Athens, Georgia. The wife desired a greenhouse where she could grow her large collection of orchids and a space she could do projects. The husband wanted a koi pond. They both wanted a space they could relax by the fire and be at peace together. The design challenge was to gracefully incorporate all of these different elements in a relatively small, open space.

37

The She Shed One surprise design idea that I presented to the client was a remodel of an existing plastic shed structure that stood abandoned and delapitated to the side of their property. Instead of hauling this out, I proposed we repurpose this structure into an attractive and functional dwelling that the client could use as her own little creative and personal space: the she-shed. I proposed painting the existing plastic facade with a sleek and discrete dark navy, painting the existing dark teal roof and shuttters black, and the brick foundation painted an off-white. I added foundation plantings, boxwood planters, and window boxes for a nice touch of greenery. My favorite detail is the repurposed longhorn mounted on the porch that I saw laying around the yard.

39

backyard oasis After presenting to them two different design concepts this plan was the hybrid final design that satisfied all of their needs. This design designates different spaces for different uses while staying connected and allowing for easy and fluid access to all areas. Contemporary square paver walkways connect the new paved Pennsylvania Bluestone patio to the quiet firepit area tucked within the forest. The boulder retaining wall terraces the backyard to create two spaces with different purposes and characters. After presenting to them two different initial design concepts, this plan was the hybrid final design that satisfied all of their wants and needs.

A peaceful Japanese zen garden in the midst of this happening central neighborhood in Athens, Georgia. This yoga enthusiast client wanted to remodel the space that she spends so much of her time looking out onto into something that she could really admire. This design was inspired by the existing elements of the site: moss, bamboo, and a natural drainage path through the lawn . In this design, I transformed the existing drainage path where water naturally flows, into a japanese zen garden-style dry creek bed filled with Mexican Beach Pebble. A small, simplistic wooden footbridge over the dry creek bed leads to a peaceful focal point - an uplit Buddah statue meditating within the lush garden. The new garden consumes the whole back half of the backyard in lush greenery, flowers, seasonality, and lots of life.

Tucked back in the wooded outskirts of Athens, GA, this 15 acre property is the new home to a young family and a beautiful new modern farmhouse. The huge backyard already holds two stylish modern playhouses that match the house for the young kids. The family wanted to make their backyard a fun, beautiful haven that they would never want to leave. They wanted a pool, firepit area, putting green, driving range, and raised beds for vegetables and flowers.

47

modern farmhouse Following many iterations of how all of these elements could connect seamlessly and elegantly, I came up with this sleek, rectalinear design that combined a modern style with rustic materials to create a cohesive, functional, and picturesque landscape. To salvage as much open lawn space as possible for the kids to run freely, I came up with a way to connect all of the different desired elements by connecting the spaces fluidly. The sleek wooden pool deck is functional night and day, whether they are lounging in the sun, or enjoying a fire under the stars. The putting green is not far from the action, connected by the modern, offset stone pavers. To fulfill the client’s vision of having a cutting and herb garden in a place where deer were not afraid to roam, I created a secluded and protected “potager” garden area tucked back around the side of the home.
