about me...

Landscape architects have the ability to connect people to nature and to each other by designing for positive experiences that ultimately bring joy. I believe that great design is pleasing and has the power to inspire. I feel inspired in thoughtfully designed spaces and I want to continue to create those experiences for others. I believe that every design should tell a story, and I am excited by the idea of using my skills to tell the story of an environment by way of great design.

PROFESSIONAL WORK While finishing my time studying landscape architecture at the University of Georgia, I had the opportunity to work as a designer for a residential design-build firm in Athens, GA. This section showcases some of my work with Butler Landscape Design and other projects that I have taken on myself.

vangelder residence HULL, GA

In hopes of bringing the favorite parts of their old home in South Florida, I designed a backyard oasis that this retired couple could enjoy and make new memories in their new home outside of Athens, Georgia. The wife desired a greenhouse where she could grow her large collection of orchids and a space she could do projects. The husband wanted a koi pond. They both wanted a space they could relax by the fire and be at peace together. The design challenge was to gracefully incorporate all of these different elements in a relatively small, open space.

The She Shed One surprise design idea that I presented to the client was a remodel of an existing plastic shed structure that stood abandoned and delapitated to the side of their property. Instead of hauling this out, I proposed we repurpose this structure into an attractive and functional dwelling that the client could use as her own little creative and personal space: the she-shed. I proposed painting the existing plastic facade with a sleek and discrete dark navy, painting the existing dark teal roof and shuttters black, and the brick foundation painted an off-white. I added foundation plantings, boxwood planters, and window boxes for a nice touch of greenery. My favorite detail is the repurposed longhorn mounted on the porch that I saw laying around the yard.

39

backyard oasis After presenting to them two different design concepts this plan was the hybrid final design that satisfied all of their needs. This design designates different spaces for different uses while staying connected and allowing for easy and fluid access to all areas. Contemporary square paver walkways connect the new paved Pennsylvania Bluestone patio to the quiet firepit area tucked within the forest. The boulder retaining wall terraces the backyard to create two spaces with different purposes and characters. After presenting to them two different initial design concepts, this plan was the hybrid final design that satisfied all of their wants and needs.

brickman residence ATHENS, GA

A peaceful Japanese zen garden in the midst of this happening central neighborhood in Athens, Georgia. This yoga enthusiast client wanted to remodel the space that she spends so much of her time looking out onto into something that she could really admire. This design was inspired by the existing elements of the site: moss, bamboo, and a natural drainage path through the lawn . In this design, I transformed the existing drainage path where water naturally flows, into a japanese zen garden-style dry creek bed filled with Mexican Beach Pebble. A small, simplistic wooden footbridge over the dry creek bed leads to a peaceful focal point - an uplit Buddah statue meditating within the lush garden. The new garden consumes the whole back half of the backyard in lush greenery, flowers, seasonality, and lots of life.

ratcliffe residence ATHENS, GA

Tucked back in the wooded outskirts of Athens, GA, this 15 acre property is the new home to a young family and a beautiful new modern farmhouse. The huge backyard already holds two stylish modern playhouses that match the house for the young kids. The family wanted to make their backyard a fun, beautiful haven that they would never want to leave. They wanted a pool, firepit area, putting green, driving range, and raised beds for vegetables and flowers.

47

modern farmhouse Following many iterations of how all of these elements could connect seamlessly and elegantly, I came up with this sleek, rectalinear design that combined a modern style with rustic materials to create a cohesive, functional, and picturesque landscape. To salvage as much open lawn space as possible for the kids to run freely, I came up with a way to connect all of the different desired elements by connecting the spaces fluidly. The sleek wooden pool deck is functional night and day, whether they are lounging in the sun, or enjoying a fire under the stars. The putting green is not far from the action, connected by the modern, offset stone pavers. To fulfill the client’s vision of having a cutting and herb garden in a place where deer were not afraid to roam, I created a secluded and protected “potager” garden area tucked back around the side of the home.
