Welcome: Thank you for making Grace-St. Luke’s part of your spiritual journey. It is our custom to observe silence before worship

for individual meditation and to silence any communication devices that might disturb you or your neighbor. The order of service is according to The Book of Common Prayer and hymns are selected from The Hymnal 1982 and Wonder, Love and Praise: A Supplement to the Hymnal 1982. After the Prelude, the Celebrant will stand to offer the Welcome and Announcements. Parents: Quiet packs are offered at each entrance to the nave to be picked up and used by children during the service. They can be returned at the end of the service. “Arise! Shine!”

Choral Prelude

Arise and shine for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord is upon you. Come lift your eyes up to the skies; See the dawn! Come lift your eyes up to the skies; Light has come! Arise and shine for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord is upon you.

“The angel Gabriel”

music: Gabriel’s Message, Basque carol; harm. Edgar Pettman (1865-1943) words: Basque carol; para. Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924)

The angel Gabriel from heaven came, his wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame; “All hail,” said he, “thou lowly maiden Mary, most highly favored lady,” Gloria! “For know a blessed Mother thou shalt be, all generations laud and honor thee, thy Son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold, most highly favored lady,” Gloria! Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head, “To me be as it pleaseth God,” she said, “my soul shall laud and magnify his holy Name.” Most highly favored lady, Gloria! Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ, was born in Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn, and Christian folk throughout the world will ever say “Most highly favored lady,” Gloria!

The Word of God Welcome and Announcements All stand and join in the singing of the opening hymn in procession.

The Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. O God, you make us glad by the yearly festival of the birth of your only Son Jesus Christ: Grant that we, who joyfully receive him as our Redeemer, may with sure confidence behold him when he comes to be our Judge; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah (9:2-7) The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness– on them light has shined. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire. For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the © Lord of hosts will do this. Lector The Word of the Lord. Psalm 96 Cantate Domino 1 Sing to the Lord a new song; * sing to the Lord, all the whole earth. 2 Sing to the Lord and bless his Name; * proclaim the good news of his salvation from day to day. 3 Declare his glory among the nations * and his wonders among all peoples. 3

4 For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; * he is more to be feared than all gods. 5 As for all the gods of the nations, they are but idols; * but it is the Lord who made the heavens. 6 Oh, the majesty and magnificence of his presence! * Oh, the power and the splendor of his sanctuary! 7 Ascribe to the Lord, you families of the peoples; * ascribe to the Lord honor and power. 8 Ascribe to the Lord the honor due his Name; * bring offerings and come into his courts. 9 Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; * let the whole earth tremble before him. 10 Tell it out among the nations: “The Lord is King! * he has made the world so firm that it cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity.” 11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea thunder and all that is in it; * let the field be joyful and all that is therein. 12 Then shall all the trees of the wood shout for joy before the Lord when he comes, * when he comes to judge the earth. 13 He will judge the world with righteousness * and the peoples with his truth. A Reading from the Letter of Paul to Titus (2:11-14) The grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly, while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds. Lector The Word of the Lord. The Christmas Pageant: Luke 2:1-19 Reading: Luke 2:1-5

In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. All sing

Reading: Luke 2:8-14 In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see — I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, ”Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!” All sing

“On Christmas Night”

music: Sussex Carol, arr. Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) words: publ. by Bishop Luke Wadding in “Small Garland of Pious and Godly Songs” (1684)

On Christmas night all Christians sing, To hear the news the angels bring, News of great joy, news of great mirth, News of our merciful King’s birth. When sin departs before his grace, Then life and health come in its place; Angels and men with joy may sing, All for to see the newborn King. All out of darkness we have light, Which made the angels sing this night: “Glory to God and peace to men, Now and forevermore. Amen.” The Presentation: Hymn 105, stanzas 1-3, “God rest you merry, gentlemen” music: God Rest You Merry, melody from Little Book of Christmas Carols, ca. 1850

words: London carol, 18th cent.

The Great Thanksgiving, Eucharistic Prayer Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, because you give Jesus Christ, your only Son, to be born for us. Tonight we come again with shepherds, sheep and angels to see what you have done in Bethlehem. In the baby Jesus, we see how much you love us and how much you want to be with us.

8

And so, Father, we bring you these gifts of bread and wine. Send your Holy Spirit on them so that they may be for us the Body and Blood of Jesus our Lord. On the night he was handed over to suffer and die, he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, gave it to his friends and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Gather us together, heavenly Father, by this Holy Communion. Make us one body in your Son, Jesus Christ, so that he may live in us and we may live in him. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept. Celebrant People

Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

The Celebrant says the following Invitation

The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. The Ministration of Holy Communion

All baptized Christians of any age are invited to receive communion at the altar rail, or via a standing station (when available). If you are interested in the sacrament of holy baptism, please speak with a member of the clergy after the service. If you wish to receive a priestly blessing, you may signify so by crossing your hands across your chest. If you or another are unable to access communion from your seat, please inform an usher before or during communion. Gluten-free wafers and a dedicated chalice are available at the altar rail and also can be administered where you are seated.
