Worship, Formation, Community, Music & More Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Grace-St. Luke’s Church provides a meaningful abundance of weekly and occasional worship, formation (learning), community-building, music, and more to enrich the faith and spiritual journeys of adults, youth, and children. This seasonal program guide (Life at GSL) is designed for all members, newcomers, and visitors to explore and engage in a myriad of events. Burning of the Greens (Outdoors) to Celebrate the Epiphany of our Lord Jesus Christ All are invited to gather in the Circle Drive for the burning of Advent and Christmas wreaths and garland to mark the end of Christmas and celebrate the Manifestation of Christ.

Martin Luther King’s Three Visits to Memphis with Journalist Otis Sanford Memphis author, journalist, and thought leader Otis Sanford will be our guest on Sunday, January 14, for the 9:30 a.m. Rector’s Forum to reflect on three visits by Dr. King to Memphis. While most know about and focus on April 1968, Mr. Sanford will tell stories and more to enlighten the audience.

A Deep Dive into the GSL 2024–2028 Strategic Plan with Task Team Members The wardens, vestry, and rector engaged a consultant to lead the parish family and clergy-staff team in the process from May to November 2023 of developing a five-year plan intended to thoughtfully reflect on our past and present ministry and to prepare creatively for a sustainable future. Following plan objectives and strategies revealed at the December 3 annual parish meeting, 2024 work is now focused on plan goals and tactics. *Due to inclement weather this event is being rescheduled, so stay tuned watch for updates along the way.

A Window into The Daily Memphian with CEO Eric Barnes In the last 20 years, more than 30,000 local journalists have lost their jobs and 2,500 newspapers have closed, creating a crisis in local journalism. But in the five years since The Daily Memphian launched, it has become the largest newsroom in the Memphis area and a new model for local journalism across the country. Join Barnes and Father Ollie Rencher for a conversation about a “new model for local journalism” based in our beloved city.

Saturday, February 3, Swords to Plowshares Gun Violence Reduction, Memphis Community Summit, 9–11 a.m. Retired Episcopal Bishop Jim Curry, co-founder of Swords to Plowshares (s2pnortheast.org), will facilitate a diverse panel of community professionals, leaders, and agencies in Trezevant Hall to reflect on the national and local situation of gun violence. The summit will include candle-lighting; reflections on the use of guns in circumstances of suicide, domestic violence, and crime; conversation about gun laws reform; and closing litany of prayers by Bishops United Against Gun Violence (bishopsagainstgunviolence.org). February 4, The Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany, 9:30–10:15 a.m.

Swords to Plowshares Gun Violence Reduction Initiative with Bishop Jim Curry (Retired) Father Ollie Rencher will host retired Episcopal Bishop Jim Curry, co-founder of Swords to Plowshares: Transforming Guns into Garden Tools, for a conversation and presentation. Started in January 2017, the program is “focused on reducing gun violence in the communities in which our events take place. With 40,000 gun deaths per year in our country, something must be done now. The strategy we apply to this problem is to convert weapons of death into tools of life, and then use those tools to the betterment of the community, all with the goal of reducing senseless gun deaths.” Spread the word about this occasion to learn about creative solutions to a national dilemma.

February 11, The Last Sunday after the Epiphany, 9:30–10:15 a.m.

A Conversation with Mayor Paul Young about Memphis, Faith, and Hope for Our Future All are invited to Trezevant Hall for a conversation facilitated by Father Ollie Rencher with newly-swornin Mayor Paul Young about the city, his personal faith journey, and what faith communities like Grace-St. Luke’s Church can do to support the hope and welfare of the city. This is a great opportunity to bring neighbors, friends, and family for a morning formation offering and worship at 8 and 10:30 a.m.

February 13, Shrove Tuesday Festival, 5:30–7:30 p.m.

On this eve of Ash Wednesday, come join Grace-St. Luke’s in celebrating Shrove Tuesday with food, music, and fellowship! The menu will include pancakes, sausage, bacon, gumbo, sides, and desserts.

Live jazz music will be provided by pianist Steve Lee leading Carl Caspersen (bass), Johnny Yancey (trumpet), and Nigel Yancey (drums). February 14, Ash Wednesday, begins Lent All adults, youth, and children are called to mark the 40 days of Lent with the ancient-modern custom of receiving ashes placed on the foreheads of worshipers in the context of services of Holy Communion. The ashes, signs of penitence and a reminder of mortality, are imposed with the sign of the cross.

Repentance and Forgiveness in Judaism with Rabbi Micah Greenstein of Temple Israel The theological principles of repentance and forgiveness are foundational aspects of the three Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) that always warrant deeper understanding and action by people of faith. GSL friend Rabbi Micah Greenstein will be hosted by Father Ollie Rencher for a Lenten conversation about how Judaism approaches these concepts and end with time for questions and answers.

Highlights from GSL and Calvary Churches April 18–21 Pilgrimage to Montgomery and Selma (AL) Come to hear from and reflect with parishioners from GSL and Calvary Church who journeyed to Alabama for a pilgrimage designed to explore some of our country’s history of racial justice and equity. Following sights such as the Equal Justice Initiative Legacy Museum, the Peace and Justice Memorial Center, the Edmund Pettus Bridge, and the Tuskegee Airman Historic Site, pilgrims will have much to share.

FORMATION on Weekdays & Weeknights at the Parish House and Off-Campus January 24 & 31 | 6 to 7 p.m. at the Parish House Reigniting Creativity in the Christian Life with Corey Latta, PhD Counselor, Author, and Academician (New Testament, English Literature) Dr. Corey Latta will lead an upcoming series “Reigniting creativity in the Christian life” on Wednesdays, January 17, 24, and 31, at 6 p.m. in the Peete Room. This class will look at the ways in which God has made each and every one of us to express creativity. We will approach the integration of faith and creativity by looking at the scripture, theology, and the work of authors like J. R. R. Lenten Weeks of February 18 through March 17 Lenten Community Small Groups: Fellowship, Food, and Learning at the Parish House or Member Homes. Lent is a perfect season to live more deeply into a parish-wide desire for increased meaningful community and connection. The clergy, staff, and new members, Malle Carrasco-Harris & Jeremy Harris, are organizing ways for adults, youth, and children to meet in various member homes throughout the region and at GSL in the weeks of February 18, 25, March 3, 10, and 17. April 17, 24, May 1 | 6 to 7 p.m. at the Parish House Unpacking The Resurrection Story with Dr. Mitzi Minor Dr. Mitzi Minor returns to Grace-St. Luke’s to engage participants in a three-week study and discussion about the Resurrection Story. Christians often speak of believing in resurrection without unpacking what it is and what it did for followers of Jesus. It was a “game changer” for the world. How did it open their eyes? What did it do for their lives? How might we practice resurrection today? Minor is the Mary Magdalene Professor of New Testament at Memphis Theological Seminary (MTS), where she joined the faculty in 1993, and holds a Ph.D. and M.Div from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and a B.A. from Auburn University. Pilates with Sydney: Mondays & Thursdays, 5:30–6:15 p.m. McClure Hall: Join Sidney Alexander for sessions that include the benefits of increased core strength, decreased back pain, increased energy, decreased stress, improved flexibility and mobility, improved balance, strengthened bones, mood boost, improved sleep and an overall sense of well-being. Yoga with Anne: Thursdays, 5:30–6:30 p.m. Trezevant Hall: If you’re looking for a new way to cope with stress, now might be the time to try that yoga class you’ve been meaning to join. Anne Ayres has been teaching yoga to patients and staff at the VA for many years and is delighted to be offering a weekly class at GSL Church. The class is open to all levels from beginner to seasoned practitioner with modifications offered. Details at gracestlukes.org/yoga.

More Than A Meal: Weekly hospitality for people without permanent housing and/or experiencing hunger to enjoy a nourishing meal, music, and conversation with us and other members of the community in Trezevant Hall. Volunteers sign up for a single Sunday or on a regular basis to set up between 3–4 p.m. Meals are served from 4–5 p.m. To learn more or to volunteer for a particular Sunday, contact one of the team captains through Realm (onrealm.org/gracestlukes).

Food Pantry Cooking Teams in Partnership with Church Health: Grace-St. Luke’s (GSL) partners with Church Health to provide its patrons with meals that promote health and prevent illness. Through this unique partnership, GSL cooking teams have fun in the GSL kitchen preparing healthy, frozen meals for Church Health to distribute weekly to their vetted clients.

Members of GLS also pick up recipe ingredients and distribute meals to neighbors at GSL on Tuesdays from 9:15–9:45 a.m. To learn more or to volunteer, contact Jerry Hudson through Realm (onrealm.org/gracestlukes).

Justice Ministry Speakers and Discussions: All are invited to participate in meetings and events as Justice Ministry serves to inspire our faith community to live out our Baptismal Covenant “to strive for justice and peace among all people” by selfreflection and direct action. (MICAH) Memphis Interfaith Coalition for Action and Hope: GSL partners with MICAH, a coalition of community and faithbased organizations joining together to give a more powerful voice for issues of justice in our city. Our current platform concentrates on three pillar issues: economic equity, education equity, and race & class equity in the justice system. We organize and speak to community leaders, always seeking to “Do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God.” Adult and youth volunteers serve as representatives of the three pillar groups. GSL’s MICAH Core meetings are on second Wednesdays (Fall–Spring), 6–7 p.m. at GSL. Issues Night are on fourth Mondays, 6–7 p.m., in-person or online to learn more about specific projects of our partnership. Sunday Evening Contemplative Holy Eucharist: Weekly, 5 p.m. except Evensong Sundays. Experience worship in Word and Sacrament in a quiet space illuminated by candles, outside and dimmed overhead lights, silence, and excellent instrumental music of cello, flute, classical guitar, piano, jazz, and bass offered on a rotating basis by guest and parish musicians. Choral Evensong: Most Third Sundays, September–May, 5 p.m. One of the ancient and modern aspects of the Anglican/ Episcopal tradition is the beautiful service of Choral Evensong (sung Evening Prayer). This contemplative liturgy is led by a member of the clergy and the choir with hymns sung by the congregation and enhanced with incense. Each includes the Magnificat (Song of Mary), Nunc Dimittis (Song of Simeon), an anthem, and mild incense.

Choirs at GSL: Joining in Grace-St. Luke’s glorious music ministry is easy. For centuries, the psalms have invited believers to bring our praises to God in song, and you can start on any given Sunday by picking up the hymnal to join in song. Memphis Boy & Girl Choir: Established in 1988, the choir is a non-profit community arts outreach program based at GraceSt. Luke’s Episcopal Church since August 2021. Open to auditioned, third-grade and older boys and girls, the choir seeks to reflect the diversity of the Memphis region and a vision of what can be accomplished in the community by talented and dedicated choristers. A first and second-grade training choir will begin this year with rehearsals on Mondays, 3:30–4 p.m., no audition required. Leaders: Dr. Patrick A. Explore GRACESTLUKES.ORG/HOLY-WEEK-AND-EASTER Observing Holy Week and Easter 2024 at Grace-St. Luke’s. In this week, the holy is redefined and recreated for us. The temple is rebuilt as the body of the crucified Christ, not a place of exclusions, a house of merchandise where we must barter to be allowed in, trading our daily lives, our secular joys and pains for the sacred currency of ritual and acceptable pure gifts that will placate God, but the cross by the roadside, unfenced, unadorned, the public and defenseless place where God gives us room. Holy Week, with all its intensity of ritual and imaginative elaboration, comes paradoxically to break down the walls of self-contained religion and morality and to gather us around the one true holy place of the Christian religion, Jesus himself, displayed to the world as the public language of our God, placarded on the history of human suffering that stretches along the roadside. This is a week for learning—not management, bargaining, and rule-keeping, but naked trust in that naked gift.

A Meditation on the Passion of the Christ, with Carols All ages are invited to one of the most profound choral services of the year. This meditation employs lessons and carols, spirituals, anthems, motets, and congregational hymns to illuminate the Passion of Christ, which is retold in biblical narratives from Mark, Matthew, and John, sung to some of the most ancient plainchant known to the Church.

Holy Wednesday, March 27 Noon Holy Eucharist with Healing Prayers and Anointing includes special prayers for God’s healing grace and optional anointing with oil.

Maundy Thursday, March 28 6:30 p.m. Solemn Liturgy of the Holy Eucharist and the Stripping, Washing, and Anointing of the Altar followed by Overnight Prayer Vigil in the Chapel.

Overnight Prayer Vigil. An Overnight Prayer Vigil will take place in the Chapel beginning at the end of the Maundy Thursday liturgy (March 28). All persons are invited to “watch and pray” for at least one hour. The Reserved Sacrament will be present in a garden scene on the altar and meditation resources will be available for reflection. Anyone deciding during the Maundy Thursday service to watch may obtain the access code from an usher or priest. Father Ollie Rencher will end the vigil at 7:30 a.m. with brief prayers on Good Friday. The Great Vigil of Easter with Festival Music Culmination of the Triduum and the initiation of Eastertide beginning with lighting the first fire of Easter in front of the church with the congregation gathered around it before all process indoors. This ancient liturgy unites many opposites including cross and resurrection and death and eternal life. Considering that Easter Day morning typically has the highest attendance, many often choose to attend this evening liturgy to begin the season. Although nursery services are not available, infants, young children, and youth often enjoy this night-time service because of its many moving parts: outside lighting of the fire, processing into the church, baptism of other children, ringing of bells, and music.

Contemplative Holy Eucharist

Palm/Passion Sunday recreates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem and points the people of God to the power of the three-day Triduum: Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Great Vigil of Easter.

The Maundy Thursday liturgy with the option of foot-washing invites us to consider the “Last Supper” in the upper room when Jesus commands us to love one another and when Judas leaves to betray Jesus. The liturgy ends with the stripping of the altar, followed by the ritual washing and anointing of the altar. When the sanctuary is stripped bare and the altar stands completely unadorned, we recall the desolation and abandonment that Jesus knew at the time of his arrest, trial, and crucifixion. The altar is then washed, as a body would be washed, and the top of the altar is anointed with oil. Before all this begins, the Reserved Sacrament of consecrated bread and wine is processed to the Chapel and placed on the “altar of repose” amid greenery and flowers that which represents the Garden of Gethsemane. It was here that Jesus went when he was deeply troubled and asked his closest friends to wait, watch, and pray. When Jesus found them sleeping, he asked, “Could you not stay awake for one hour?”

On Good Friday, we commemorate Jesus’ last hours—the fixed “trial” before authorities, his being mocked, his compassion on the crowd and the criminals who died alongside him, and the intense of bystanders, soldiers and a few women followers who witness Jesus’ suffering either right under the cross or at a distance. A reading of the Passion narrative, meditations by the clergy, music, silence, the procession of a wooden cross, solemn collects, communion from the Reserved Sacrament, and veneration of the cross will enhance our experience.

The Great Vigil of Easter is the culmination of Lent through Holy Week and the initiation of Eastertide. Beginning with the lighting of the first fire of Easter, this liturgy unites many opposites and binaries that inform daily life: the struggle between dark and light; the old person (Adam) and new person (Jesus); cross and resurrection; death and eternal life; beginnings and endings. It helps us grasp God as a liberator and savior: for the people of Israel with the Exodus; for Jesus through resurrection; and for ourselves as we are united with Christ and adopted as God’s sons and daughters in baptism. In the early Church, new Christians were baptized at this service and permitted to participate in the Eucharist for the first time. It is the high point in our liturgical year when our salvation history comes alive through ritual, scripture, and sacrament. The Sunday of the Resurrection: Easter Day continues the festival when the “Alleluias” returned, the sacrament of Holy Baptism was administered, and the people of God were reminded that death is not the final answer. Life is the final answer, and Jesus is our Hope.
