Radical Hospitality: A Spiritual Practice at Grace-St. Luke’s The Rev. Ollie V. Rencher, Rector

“Hospitality Begins Inside” marks the second chapter in one of my favorite books, Radical Hospitality: Benedict’s Way of Love. Father Daniel Homan, O.S.B., and Lonni Collins Pratt offer that “a spiritual practice is an action intended to make a change or adjustment in the deepest realm of the self. A spiritual practice is a thing we do that opens a door. It might be a meditation or prayer. It could be serving the poor. Stripping life of what is unessential and practicing simplicity – that is a spiritual practice. The spiritual practice creates a possibility or opportunity, but the change itself is more gift than effort. The spiritual practice puts us into a receiving place where we are open to the something more that we call God. You can set your will to be more open to others, but your heart still has to stretch gradually.” As July 25 marked my one-anniversary as your rector, among many blessings received, I am impressed by the welcoming environment for which Grace-St. Luke’s has been long described. In direct and indirect ways, weekly visitors, newcomers, and members alike are invited to and welcomed into all that parish life offers through worship, formation, fellowship, service opportunities, and special events. Our hearts still have to stretch gradually. As GSL continues to be a welcoming place, our goal is to create a place of belonging, whereby all who come and go from our sacred space in the heart of Midtown Memphis might bear an internal feeling that keeps them connected to and always coming back. The spiritual practice of hospitality is bound to support us on our journeys into Christ, the one we follow faithfully and who shows us how to be and become known in this life. At GSL, we continue to welcome a host of visitors into our common vibrant life. While many have become affiliated through worship on Sunday morning or evening or

Wednesday at Noon, others have come through the Sunday Parish Hall Forum and evening formation offerings, 12-step meetings, music, More-Than-A-Meal volunteerism, and Grace-St. Luke’s School. In addition to the summertime Newcomers’ Gatherings hosted by the Congregational Development Team, you will hear about and see more intentional initiatives to practice hospitality, including invitations to serve as a Welcome Host (Greeter) before and after worship and for other events. Meanwhile, I ask that we pray daily to practice hospitality with Jesus on our mind. Our mindfulness definitely will be felt by and might affect the other, whomever she or he may be, and we too will be changed. And in so doing, let us consider more reflection from Radical Hospitality: Benedict’s Way of Love: “Hospitality, rather than being something you achieve, is something you enter. It is an adventure that takes you where you never dreamed of going. It is not something you do, as much as it is someone you become. You try and you fail. You try again. You make room for one person at a time, you give one chance at a time, and each of these choices of the heart stretches your ability to receive others. This is how we grow more hospitable – by welcoming one person when the opportunity is given to you. Long ago, Christians were wrestling with the same kinds of things you and I leave unsaid day after day. There are no easy answers. Saint Benedict offers none except that we must be open to others, especially, he says, the poor and the outcast. Benedict was a Christian and so Jesus was his model for how to treat the poor. Jesus told his followers: If you ignore them, you ignore me. If you feed them, you feed me. So, Benedict tells his monks, receive every person as if you are receiving Christ himself…In our relationships with others what matters is that we keep trying. There is a place inside that you must first open, before you open your door. Some days it will be hard to do that, other days it will be easier. What is matters is that you keep trying.” Godspeed and blessings as we try the spiritual practice of hospitality, – The Reverend Ollie V. Rencher, Rector

Grace-St. Luke's Episcopal Church Vision Statement Our Vision is to be a thriving community of hope, belonging, and healing through worship, parish life, and service, and who rejoices in the love of Jesus to transform the world.

Wellness and Recovery Sunday “The Infinite Value of a Painful Past” with The Rev. Stuart Hoke, August 25 The human body is a the temple of God to be cared for in mind, body, and spirit. Because all beloved children are called to strive daily toward wholeness and ultimately, wellness, self-care includes paying attention to any addictions that may be occurring in our lives or the lives of others. The Addiction and Recovery Commission of the Diocese of West Tennessee is a resource for the education, care and support of people affected by the spiritual despair and disease of addiction. It offers support and comfort to families and loved ones whose lives are impacted by another’s addiction. It also joins The General Convention of the Episcopal Church in setting aside days like Recovery Sunday to celebrate of the deliverance by God’s grace of persons who have been imprisoned by a punishing and bewildering illness. The cost of this disease to our society and our Church, is monumental. It breaks the hearts of those who love the one who is addicted. It wounds the Body of Christ. Parish Hall Forum—The Infinite Value of a Painful Past: Interweaving his personal experience as a recovering person with the principles of Christian living, Father Stuart Hoke (through an interview by the Rev. Ollie V. Rencher, Rector) will focus on the miracle of Redemption—so visibly and actively at work in circles of Recovery. He will speak on the spiritual signs and symptoms of addictive illness and “unpack” the good news that “showing others who suffer how we were given help is the very thing that makes life seem so worthwhile to us now.” (Big Book, p. 124) Please join us Sunday, August 25, and invite your friends and loved ones who are in recovery, and those who have not yet found this way of life, to join you this day to celebrate and to hear this life saving message. The Rev. Stuart Hoke will lead the Parish Hall Forum and preach at 8 and 10:30 a.m. Come and hear what they have to say about this significant topic. The Rev. Dr. Stuart Hoke is a national leader in the recovery efforts of the Episcopal Church. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, and raised across the river in Arkansas, Fr. Hoke attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas where he obtained his Bachelor’s degree. He then graduated from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he received the Master of Divinity degree. Ordained in 1972, Hoke spent a significant part of his ministry serving congregations in Arkansas and Texas. In 1996, Fr. Hoke completed a Master’s degree in Sacred Theology at New York’s General Theological Seminary, and was awarded the Doctor of Theology degree in the spring of 2000. For the next eight years he served as Executive Assistant to the Rector of Trinity Wall Street in NYC, and Missioner to St. Paul’s Chapel at Ground Zero. In his extensive work for the past 30 years in the ministry of recovery, Stuart has been a frequent conference and retreat conductor throughout the Episcopal Church; and continues to serve as an Adjunct Professor in Pastoral Theology at General Seminary—having pioneered 2 courses on the Church’s role in the treatment of addiction. Fr. Hoke resides in Little Rock. Exodus: GSL Parish Retreat Sept. 27-29 gracestlukes.org/events/parish-weekend/ Exodus is a Friday to Sunday excursion for GSL parishioners to The Gray Center, an Episcopal Camp and Conference Center north of Canton, Mississippi. In the beautiful lakeside setting of Camp Bratton-Green, participants can connect with God and fellow parishioners, and do as much or as little as they want. Retreat activities include canoeing, fishing, campfire, zipline, pool and lake swimming, disc golf, yoga, hiking and exercise trails, and more for all ages. Indoor and outdoor chapel worship is enhanced by a guest musician and officiated by one of our priests who also leads meditations and informal conversations throughout the weekend. Most people arrive to Exodus late afternoon on Friday for dinner followed by a night of fellowship and play, and remain through the closing Eucharist by the lakeside on Sunday morning. Saturday is full of daytime group and optional activities and nighttime of more relaxed fun including a bonfire. Households of children and youth stay together at Camp Bratton-Green in rustic cabins (bunkbeds) around Rose Hill Lake. Adult-only lodging also is available in camp cabins or this year’s new options across the road from the camp: The Inn (6 rooms, 2 twin beds, private bathroom) or one Cottage (8 rooms, 2 twin beds, private bathroom, common area, kitchenette, fireplace, back patio), both overlooking Gray Center Lake. All retreat meals are parishioner-prepared and served family-style on the giant screened porch of Camp Bratton-Green. For more information, contact Sharon and Josh Shipley, Lee Nix, or the Rev. Around the Diocese Podcasting Spirituality: Annual 11th Step Retreat

Wherever you find yourself on your journey of spiritual discovery this summer, make plans now to join us (Sept. 6-7) overnight in the peaceful woods of St. Columba at our annual 11th Step Retreat. This year the retreat will head into cyberspace where we try to disconnect, by connecting together. Our program this year will feature video and audio podcasts from nationally recognized recovery teachers, spiritual writers and thought leaders, where we will dive into some small and large group breakout sessions and exercises around the ideas presented by some amazing people. Folks like Brene’ Brown on vulnerability, Richard Rohr on spiritual discovery, Nadia Bolz Weber on forgiveness, Thich Nhat Hanh on the beauty of the present moment, Tara Brach on more ways to be vulnerable, Brian Pirsor on codependency, and others along the way. We hope to create some space where our devices can teach about connection vs. drawing us away from connection to a higher source. The retreat begins at 4 p.m. on Friday and ends about 5 p.m. on Saturday with a closing recovery Eucharist. Dinner Friday and breakfast and lunch on Saturday are included in the cost. There will be guided meditation, an open 12 step meeting at the fire pit, free time for exploring the vast grounds, s’mores, a time for fellowship, and much more. Overnight space is limited so be sure to reserve your space as soon as possible. Registration Fee: $135 for double occupancy or $175 for single occupancy. Cost includes retreat registration, overnight lodging, and all meals. For more information call, text or email Shannon Tucker at 901-281-0785 or shannon.tucker at gmail.com or Laura White at 901-210-1833 or psychle768 at gmail.com. EYC News and Events GSL Youth Community In July, 22 youth departed Grace-St. Luke’s for a week long Service Trip in our own backyard. Our young people and adult leaders partnered with Memphis Youth Mission based at First Presbyterian in downtown Memphis, where we also slept each night. During our time together we had the opportunity to deliver meals, sort donations, visit the Slave Haven Museum, and even made our way our to see the Lion King on our evening off. This week provided an opportunity to serve our own community, while being able to grow closer together in fellowship. -Amzie Williams, Director of Youth Formation
