New Offering: Men's Six-Week Fellowship Thursdays, Jan. 9, 16, 23, 30, Feb. 6, 13, 7-7:45 a.m. All men are invited to join GSL church member and school parent, Doug Duncan and the Rev. Ollie V. Rencher, rector and chaplain to the school, for a weekly evolving conversation about spiritual growth, faith and doubt, current events and concerns, intellectual stimulation, and thoughtful living in a fast world. This relaxed but lively fellowship will gather in the first floor Lounge at GSL Church. Breakfast snacks and coffee provided. You do not need to commit to attending all six weeks. Drop in any time! Daytime Book Group (Jan. 9) Our next discussion is Jan. 9 with The Secret Wife by Gill Paul. This is an open group—no invitation or requirements other than a love of reading. We meet in the Red Room from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bring a sack lunch. The group is facilitated by Janie Morris (morrishome1 at bellsouth.net) and Carol Ann Mallory (cam2269 at aol.com). Bishop's Annual Visit (Jan. 12) This Sunday, Jan. 12, is an extraordinary day in the life of Grace-St. Luke’s with the annual visitation of the Rt. Rev. Phoebe Roaf and the baptism, confirmation, and reception of our newest members. Bishop Roaf will preach at the 8 and 10:30 a.m. services. We will celebrate with a festive reception in Trezevant Hall following the 10:30 service.

This week's Parish Hall Forum topic is "Conversation with the Bishop, The Right Reverend Phoebe A. Roaf." More on Sunday morning formation at www.gracestlukes.org/sunday-morning. Come early for breakfast in Trezevant Hall beginning at 8:45 a.m. and stay for the forum, 9:15-10:10 a.m.

Third Thursday (Jan. 16) The first Third Thursday Fellowship of 2020 will be Jan. 16. Carol Coletta, president of Memphis River Parks Partnership, the agency charged with redeveloping the riverfront, will talk about the progress thus far as well as the status of plans for Tom Lee Park. Come learn more about this vital Memphis asset and ask this knowledgeable expert your questions. We will begin at 6 p.m. with fellowship followed by dinner and Carol's presentation. The cost is $20 per person, and all members of the congregation, no matter your age, are welcome. Mayor Strickland, Wednesday Lunch Speaker (Jan. 22) Mark your calendar for the first GSL Wednesday Lunch Fellowship of 2020 when Mayor Jim Strickland will reflect on “The State of Memphis and Hopes for 2020.� A daytime adult gathering, the Wednesday Lunch Fellowship (formerly The 39ers) meets almost every month for social time at Noon followed by 12:30-1:30 catered buffet lunch ($6) with a brief program by special guests. Care Like King—MLK Days of Service (Jan. 17-20) Once again Volunteer Memphis is sponsoring a community-wide effort to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service projects. There are plenty of opportunities to serve in a manner that fits in with your schedule and interests from Friday, Jan. 17, through Monday, Jan. 20. Just go to the Volunteer United website (tinyurl.com/MLKDaysofService2020) and sign up. Allison and I will participate in the “Beltline Project” cleanup of a vacant lot at 427 Boston (38111) on January 20 starting at 11 a.m. This opportunity is near Midtown. Please join us. Jim Drummond, GSL Outreach Commitee Please note: On King Day (Jan. 20), all visitors to the Civil Rights Museum receive free admission. Guests who donate canned goods to King Day Food Drive also receive $2 off one future museum visit in 2020. Donations benefit Mid-South Food Bank to help feed families in the Mid-South. Guests who donate to the blood drive benefitting Vitalant (formerly Lifeblood) receive free King Day admission for four people with express entry to bypass the line PLUS additional free admission for four any day in 2020.
