Preparing for Advent: The Church New Year
Friday greetings, Grace-St. Luke’s! From Pentecost to Advent: Green to Blue. Pentecost, our longest and “green” season on the church year calendar, culminated on Christ the King Sunday, November 22. For Advent, GSL and many faith communities worldwide adorn worship spaces with Sarum “blue” (color historically associated with the Virgin Mary, waiting, patience, images of the sky in Advent scripture). This change of color in the paraments for the chancel and sanctuary and the presence of the Advent wreath with five symbolic candles are among a variety of changes that come with this new season. Sunday, November 29, The First Sunday of Advent. Tune in at 9:15 a.m. for a 30-minute virtual formation offering followed by 10:30 a.m. worship, Advent Wreath-Making Event, and 5:30 p.m. prerecorded concert. 9:15 a.m. Formation: An Advent Like No Other with The Rev. Ollie V. Rencher, Rector via Facebook , YouTube , & the GSL website . 10:30 a.m. Holy Eucharist, In Person or Livestream. 5:30 p.m. Advent Organ Concert. Tune in to Facebook or YouTube for an afternoon of organ music for Advent with Debbie Smith, Assistant Organist-Choirmaster, & Dr. Patrick A. Scott, Director of Music and Organist. For Children. All children are invited to the 20-minute virtual Prayer Table for conversation, songs, stories, and prayer via Zoom after the 10:30 service. Advent Season Devotional Resources for Individual and Households include Clergy Reflections with Music for Meditation. Learn more at www.gracestlukes.org/discover/spiritualguidance. Annual Meeting of the Parish (Virtual), Sunday, December 6, 9:15 a.m. All members and newcomers are asked to participate in this important virtual meeting. A small group will be gathered in Trezevant Hall to conduct the meeting and engage remote participation via the Zoom Meeting platform and the use of election voting software called ElectionBuddy. Paper ballots for return or hand-deliver to the church office by Friday, December 4, are being mailed to the homes of members who are noninternet users with a copy of the online “Nominees for Vestry Class of 2023 " guide and other materials. All meeting details including virtual access, agenda, vestry nominee biographical statements, and the voting process will be maintained online at www.gracestlukes.org/annualmeeting2020 and shared via eNews.
