News for our Parish Community

February 20, 2020

A Message from the Rev. Meredith Jane Day, Curate What a busy, full, and wonderful February we’ve experienced so far at Grace-St. Luke’s parish! Over the past month, I’ve been honored to be involved in the hosting of author Lauren Winner, co-teach a Wednesday evening class on Desmond Tutu’s “God Has A Dream,” as well as serve as Spiritual Director for our Happening Diocesan High School Retreat, which included 17 youth and adult leaders from GSL. I’m looking forward to closing out the month with our annual Women’s Retreat, Shrove Tuesday Festival, and a holy Ash Wednesday. May God continue to bless us this week as we prepare to quiet our hearts and expand our minds in the impending season of Lent.

This Week and Beyond

Parish Hall Forum (Feb. 23) “Giving Up the Alleluias:” Moving from Rejoicing at the Light to Contemplating How We Become the Light with Dr. Dan Pigg – During the Sundays after the Epiphany, we have been exploring various facets of Jesus’ early ministry, in particular moments related to the call of Jesus. In Lent, through our internal reflections, our study, engagement with scripture in various environments, and participation in additional opportunities to worship, we learn and experience how we can become that light to the world. Lent is our call to ministry, and that begins by going inside so what we may re-emerge to be the people God has called us to be. The Parish Hall Forum is Sunday at 9:15 a.m. in Trezevant Hall.

Take Note

How will this help the congregation? To start with… The member directory will be available anytime. Group and committee leaders can communicate with team members directly through Realm (either on the internet or in the app). Upload a picture! It’s easier to remember someone with a picture. Updating your profile means the church has your most current information. No more calling or emailing to get your address changed. And you get to decide what other members can see in the directory. For more info, visit www.gracestlukes.org/realm.

Lenten Resources (available for pickup in public spaces) Signs of Life Reader: This reader serves as an introduction to Signs of Life, inviting individuals or groups to explore Light, Water, Food, Shelter, and Community through homilies, meditations, and reflection questions. It is our hope that this reader will be a resource for your spiritual life and prepare you for participation in Signs of Life. For more info, visit www.signsoflife.org.

2020 Lenten Meditations from Episcopal Relief and Development: This booklet invites daily reflection on the spiritual, physical and emotional lives of children—and our role in nurturing their growth. Produced by Episcopal Relief & Development in partnership with authors of Grow Christians. For more info, visit www.episcopalrelief.org/church-inaction/church-campaigns/lent.

GSL Ministry Areas Offering Something For Everyone. In addition to worship, the Vestry and the Clergy-Staff Team invite all able-bodied individuals to identify at least one way to get involved in the sustainability of Grace-St. Luke’s, and have released “Parish Life Ministry Areas” online (www.gracestlukes.org/news/parishlifeministryareas) and for pickup in the public spaces. For more about ways to invest in life at GSL, contact Stewardship Associate Chapman Morrow (901-252-6328, cmorrow@gracestlukes.org).
