A Message from Dr. Patrick A. Scott, Director of Music and Organist This coming Sunday marks an exciting day for me for a couple of reasons: (1) I’m happy to be able to play my first organ recital at Grace-St. Luke’s and (2) following the recital the Grace-St. Luke’s Choir & Clergy will offer a service of Choral Evensong. Evensong (sung Evening Prayer) is possibly my favorite service in the Episcopal Church. The music, the peacefulness, the thoughtfulness, the liturgy, all of it combines to create one of the jewels of the Anglican tradition. A mostly sung service, the choir will offer sung prayers, a Psalm sung to traditional Anglican chant, Herbert Sumsion’s setting of the Magnificat (Song of Mary) and the Nunc Dimittis (Song of Simeon), and the great anthem of Epiphany Light, “Holy is the true light” by William Harris. Won’t you join us for this exciting afternoon of great music! Pre-Evensong Recital: 5 PM Choral Evensong: 5:30 PM

Lauren Winner Comes to GSL (Feb. 9) Parish Hall Forum – Exploring The Imagery of Salt and Light in Scripture with The Rev. Lauren Winner: In Matthew 5:12-20, Jesus said that “You are the salt of the earth…You are the light of the world.” Join Episcopal priest, Duke Divinity School professor, and author Lauren Winner for a stirring exploration of these biblical images and their implication for living as followers of Jesus. On this same day, all are invited to attend a Memphis Lunch and Learn with Lauren Winner on "The Impact of Anna Julia Cooper and Frederick Douglass on the American Story” from noon to 1:30 p.m. in
Trezevant Hall. Register and sign up for lunch online tinyurl.com/GSLWinner2020 or contact Abby Huber (901-272-7425, ahuber@gracestlukes.org). The Rev. Lauren Winner will preach at the 8 and 10:30 a.m. services.

Scout Sunday (Feb. 9) The Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts of GSL designate a Scout Sunday each year to recognize the contributions of young people and adults to scouting. In 1920, scouting became a part of the community life of GraceSt. Luke’s Episcopal Church, continuing today with Boy Scout Troop 34, Cub Scout Pack 34, and the Girl Scout Daisy Troop 10283, which is a part of Girl Scouts Heart of the South. The 100-year old presence of Troop 34 is the longest continuously chartered troop in the Chickasaw Council. For more information, approach a scout or a scout leader today, or visit www.gracestlukes.org/scouting.
Organ Recital followed by Evensong (Feb. 9) All are invited to a 5 p.m. recital by Dr. Patrick A. Scott, GSL Director of Music and Organist, before 5:30 Choral Evensong with Holy Eucharist. The recital will include Johann Sebastian Bach’s Gigue Fugue, Paul Halley’s Outer Hebrides (Fantasia on three Celtic melodies), Gerre Hancock's Improvisation on St. Clement (The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended), and Max Reger’s Toccata & Fuga, from Op. 59. The Clergy and the Grace-St. Luke’s Choir will lead the 45-minute intentional time to come away from the busy-ness of life to meditate on scripture and to spend time in quiet prayer, while listening to and participating in music (hymns). During the retiring procession of the choir, worshippers wishing to stay for a 15-minute spoken Holy Eucharist will be invited to move closer to the altar and be seated in the choir or nave pews. Spread the word and bring a guest. To read more about evensong at GSL, visit www.gracestlukes.org/news/evensong-with-eucharist-gsl-winter-spring-2020.
Men's Six-Week Fellowship Thursdays through Feb. 13, 7-7:45 a.m. All men are invited to the final in a series of weekly evolving conversations about spiritual growth, faith and doubt, current events and concerns, intellectual stimulation, and thoughtful living in a fast world. This relaxed but lively fellowship gathers in the first floor Lounge at GSL Church. Breakfast snacks and coffee provided. For more information, contact Doug (Doug.Duncan at wolfrivercap.com) or Ollie+ (orencher@gracestlukes.org).

Women's Retreat (Feb. 21-22) This year, we are delighted that the Rev. Katherine Bush and Mrs. Shari Ray will bring the themes of their popular class “The Meaning of Life” from St. Mary’s Episcopal School to the GSL Women’s Retreat. You can look forward to great conversations about how we make meaning as we move through our daily work, our struggles, our relationships, and seek out more joy in our lives. We’ll read a little, write a little, talk a lot, and have a great time together. And of course, there will be plenty of time to rest, experience fellowship, and enjoy the beautiful grounds of St. Columba. The retreat will take place February 21 (approx. 5 p.m.) until February 23 (approx. 11 a.m.) at St. Columba Retreat Center just outside of Memphis. Cost is $150. Please register by February 18 at the following link: www.gracestlukes.org/events/womens-retreat.

Children & Youth
Project Purpose is thankful for the CrossMen! The practice of gratitude for those who serve around us at GSL has inspired several wonderful projects among our 4th and 5th grade Sunday School class, Project Purpose. Most recently, homemade sugar cookies were given to all the GSL CrossMen in appreciation for the hard work it takes to prepare those delicious Sunday breakfasts! During one Sunday class time, the children rolled out the dough, cut 100 cookies, and baked them. The following week, all the cookies were iced and packaged for pick up. For pictures and more, visit gracestlukes.org/news/project-purpose-is-thankful-for-thecrossmen. If you’re a Crossman, please stop by Abby’s office and pick up your Cross Man cookie!
