Embracing and Celebrating Belovedness The Rev. Ollie V. Rencher, Rector

The gift of every day presents an opportunity to consider what it means to be God’s beloved child and to see the image of God in every human being. Just as God said to Jesus on the occasion of his baptism, “You are my beloved; with you I am well pleased,” God continually speaks to us, “You are my beloved.” Being God’s beloved daughters and sons means that we are enough, solely because we are images of God—outward and visible signs of the mystery, love, and hope of God. How can we embrace and celebrate our belovedness? God has blessed this broken world with us and others who might care for it and all who inhabit it, and who might partner with God to bring about healing and wholeness. Despite what today’s society and norms suggest, our faith teaches that spiritual and religious living, slowing down just enough, create a purposeful path for followers of Jesus to live more fully into who we are called to be. Accordingly, life at Grace-St. Luke’s seeks to assist us on the way. Our weekly and seasonal worship, learning, fellowship, and service opportunities are offered that we intentionally and radically might engage God, deepen connections, and invite non-parishioners to join us on The Jesus Movement of The Episcopal Church: “Following Jesus into loving, liberating and life-giving relationship with God, with each other and with the earth.” It is early enough in the 2019th year of our Lord to consider how we might approach life. While naturally some things will change and some will remain the same, the God within and around our bodies invites us to voyage into our belovedness: being, becoming, living. In his book, Life of the Beloved, Henri Nouwen (1932-1996) reflects powerfully on the matter. The following is a blend of his words and mine, as we embrace and celebrate belovedness and encourage others. Being. Being the beloved means that “every time we listen with great attentiveness to the voice that calls us the Beloved, we will discover within ourselves a desire to hear that voice longer and more deeply. It is like discovering a well in the desert. Once we have touched wet ground, we want to dig deeper…All we need is a desire to find the water and drink from it.” Becoming. Becoming is the journey of understanding that we are chosen, blessed, broken, and given to the world, all by the love and glory of God. It is about engaging the world and life with purpose, God’s holy purpose to reconcile the world, the mission of the Church: to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ. Living. As those who are chosen, blessed, broken, and given, we are called to live our lives with deep inner joy and peace. It is the life of the Beloved, lived in a world constantly trying to convince us that the burden is on us to prove that we are worthy of being loved…the unfathomable mystery of God is that God is a Lover who wants to be loved. The one who created us is waiting for our response to the

love that gave us our being. God not only says: “You are my Beloved.” God also asks: “Do you love me?” and offers us countless chances to say “Yes” to our inner truth. Blessings and peace as we try, Ollie+ The Rev. Ollie V. Rencher, Rector

2019 Grace St. Luke’s Women’s Retreat Saying Yes to Joy Friday Evening Feb. 22 – Sunday Morning Feb. 24 The annual Grace St. Luke's women’s retreat at St. Columba will be from dinner Friday evening, February 22, until noon Sunday, February 24. The Rev. Amy George, associate rector at Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, will again be our wise and witty guide as we consider “joy.” Where is it? What is it? Who is it? This concept resonates deeply as we all yearn in different ways for the essence of “joy.” You can register online at www.gracestlukes.org/events/womens-retreat/. If you would rather, you may also download a registration form and mail your registration by following the above link.

Daytime Book Group February 14 Our next discussion is February 14 with The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katarina Bivald. THIRD THURSDAY is February 21 The weather may be cold but the hospitality will be warm in Trezevant Hall as we gather on the 21st for fellowship hour with snacks and beverages, followed by a catered dinner and speakers. We begin at 6 p.m. and end by 8. Reservations are required ($15 per person) and should be made by the morning of Tuesday, February 19. For reservations, call or email Lucy (901-272-6333, lucy@gracestlukes.org) or pay online at www.gracestlukes.org/ events/third-thursday. Margery and Roger Wolcott will share their journey from the investment world of San Francisco to an Episcopal community ministry, Constance Abbey, near St. Mary's Cathedral. Worshippers at St. Mary's early weekday Eucharist began walking the neighborhood, getting to know their neighbors and their needs. Soon the Wolcotts moved into the neighborhood and opened their doors. They have built a community and not an agency. Come and learn more. –Betty Peyton and Julie Denman, Coordinators

Food Pantry Facts by Juan Fuentes

This is the year-end report for the Food Pantry, and we are thankful for the generosity of GSL parishioners and other groups in the community that collect food for the “little food pantry with a BIG heart.” The help of the GSL School 1st, 2nd, and 5th graders, teachers, and parents are always a blessing. The 1st graders made “blessing bags,” the 2nd graders made stockings for the clients, and the 5th graders collected the yearly food drive to help the GSL Food Pantry and the Mid-South Food Bank and the 5th graders also help with distribution at the Pantry in December and January. Thank you to all our volunteers who pack, distribute food, and help with Food Bank pick-ups! YOU make it possible—love and gratitude! We are grateful for all this help that allows us to continue helping those in need in the community. December, Number of Families served: 42 households, which included 52 adults, 63 children, and 12 seniors.

The Memphis Child Advocacy Center is a place where victims can become children again. The compassionate professionals at the Memphis CAC help families after reported child sexual and other severe abuse. Kids and non-offending parents and caregivers meet with investigators, prosecutors, therapists, and advocates at one childfriendly central location.

Volunteer Hours for December: 21.5 hours, which included 8 hours distributing food, 4.5 hours Food Bank pick-up and shelving, 3.5 hours shopping and shelving, 5.5 hours cleaning and re-stocking, not including the hours spent by volunteer packers.

The Shelby County Child Protection Investigation Team, headquartered at the Memphis CAC, includes 15 agencies involved in the investigation, prosecution, and intervention of child sexual and severe abuse. Memphis CAC employees include forensic interviewers, therapists, and advocates. The CAC's kidfriendly setting serves an average of 1,000 kids annually.

Mark your calendars! The last Sunday of the month, February 24, is Food Pantry Sunday! We ask that you bring dried milk, tooth paste, soap, deodorant, toilet paper, and hygiene products.

The Memphis Child Advocacy Center's Works of Heart valentine art show and auction will be on Saturday, February 9. Art lovers will gather at the Memphis College of Art to bid on over 100 heart-themed works by leading regional artists.Contributors

include artists like Carroll Todd, Nancy Cheairs, Dolph Smith, Maritza Davila, NJ Woods, Leandra Urrutia, Suzanne Landers, Brooke Sarden, Quantavious “Toonky” Worship, and Bill Huettel.

Year End Report: In 2018 we served 616 households, which included 1054 children, 827 adults, and 169 seniors.

Welcome our New Volunteers: Paula Boggs, Tori Rowe, Georgia Lejuwaan, Maureen Kennedy, and Patty Crawford. Thank you! Volunteers are always needed! To volunteer, call Juan Fuentes, 901-849-7033, or email juanjf7777@aol.com. “Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others.” – Booker T. Washington
