Turning to God in Epiphanytide and Lent The Rev. Ollie V. Rencher, Rector

Each new season on the church year calendar is a chance for followers of Jesus to turn to God. I am forever inspired and reminded by many fellow pilgrims, such as our Presiding Bishop, The Most Reverend Michael Curry, about ways to approach life. Most important (and a relief!) is the reality that all we can do is try and give it our best efforts. Such is the case for the spiritual practice of “turning” to God - one of the seven practices associated with The Way of Love: Practices for a Jesus-Centered Life (The Episcopal Church 2018). Bishop Curry writes that “To be a Christian is to be a seeker. We seek love: to know God’s love, to love, and to be loved by others. It also means learning to love ourselves as a child of God. We seek freedom from the many forces that pull us from living as God created us to be: sin, fear, oppression, and division. God desires us to be dignified, whole, and free. We also seek abundant life. This is a life that is overflowing with joy, peace, generosity, and delight. It is a life where there is enough for all because we share with abandon. We seek a life of meaning, giving back to God and living for others and not just for ourselves. Ultimately, we seek Jesus.” Curry presses on with wisdom, “Jesus is the way of love and that has the power to change lives and change the world. How are we called to practice the Way of Love? Like a “Rule of Life” practiced by Christians for almost two thousand years, there are specific ways that help us live intentionally in our daily life, following our deepest values. Each is not an add-on to our day, but a way to recognize God working in us and through us. Like the disciples, we are called by Jesus to follow the Way of Love. With God’s help, we can turn from the powers of sin, hatred, fear, injustice, and oppression toward the way of truth, love, hope, justice, and freedom. In turning, we reorient our lives to Jesus Christ, falling in love again, again, and again. We state “I will, with God’s help”

as a response to the questions, “Do you turn to Jesus Christ and accept him as your Savior?” and “Will you persevere in resisting evil, and whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord?” in our Baptismal Covenant. This is what it means to turn to God: pause, listen, and choose to follow Jesus in your daily life.” While the remainder of Epiphanytide comes with a focus, prayers, scripture, and music on the showing forth, appearance, manifestation, and revelation of Jesus to all humanity, we will begin Lent on Ash Wednesday (February 26) as a season of what I like to call “increased reflection.” It is my prayer that the February’s opportunities of worship, formation, in-reach, outreach, and fellowship will further support our faith, and order our steps as each of us seeks to turn to God: pause, listen, and choose to follow Jesus in our daily lives. Godspeed and blessings as we try, – The Reverend Ollie V. Rencher, Rector

Grace-St. Luke’s Annual Women’s Retreat

This year, we are delighted that the Rev. Katherine Bush and Mrs. Shari Ray will bring the themes of their popular class, "The Meaning of Life," from St. Mary's Episcopal School to the GSL Women's Retreat. You can look forward to great conversations about how we make meaning as we move through our daily work, our struggles, our relationships, and seek out more joy in our lives. We'll read a little, write a little, talk a lot, and have a great time together. And of course, there will be plenty of time to rest, experience fellowship, and enjoy the beautiful grounds of St. Columba. The retreat will take place Feb. 21 (approx. 5 p.m.) until Feb. 23 (approx. 11 a.m.) at St. Columba Retreat Center just outside of Memphis. Cost is $150. Please register by Feb. 18 at the following link: www.gracestlukes.org/events/womens-retreat.

The Presentation of our Lord Jesus Christ in the Temple, February 2 On Feb. 2, the Church celebrates The Presentation of our Lord Jesus Christ in the Temple, which coincides this year with the Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany. Also known as Candlemas and the Feast of the Purification, it commemorates the presentation of Jesus and the purification of Mary in the Jerusalem Temple forty days after Jesus’ birth (requirements of Jewish law, Leviticus 12:2–8), The feast is celebrated about forty days after Christmas. According to the account of Luke 2:22–39, the presentation of Jesus was also the occasion of the meeting of Jesus with Simeon and Anna. Simeon’s prayer of blessing is the basis for the canticle Nunc dimittis (Book of Common Prayer, p. 120). The feast dates from fourth century Jerusalem, and before observation by Anglican/Episcopal tradition, it was introduced in Rome in the seventh century, where it included a procession with candles and the singing of the Nunc dimittis. The celebration came to include the lighting and blessing of candles which were carried in procession. - An Episcopal Dictionary of the Church, Don S. Armentrout, Church Publishing Inc.

Introducing Realm Connect for GSL

A MEMBER MINISTRY TOOL FOR THE WHOLE CONGREGATION What is Realm Connect?

Realm Connect is a ministry platform—a browser-based application for the whole church. That means it isn’t just a database. It is an interactive tool designed to integrate members, ministries, and groups. The member directory will be in Realm. You can update your own profile, keep in touch with others, stay involved in groups, manage pledges and giving, and more.

How will this help the congregation?

To start with… The member directory will be available anytime. Group and committee leaders can communicate with team members directly through Realm (either on the internet or in the app). Upload a picture! It’s easier to remember someone with a picture. Updating your profile means the church has your most current information. No more calling or emailing to get your address changed. And you get to decide what other members can see in the directory.

What else is coming?

More features will be available soon. Groups and events will become accessible in the coming months. Group boards will make it possible to communicate just within a small group or committee. Event registrations will move to Realm. And much more!

What about my privacy?

Realm is safe, private, and secure. Realm is only made up of people in our church, not a social network open to everyone. Realm keeps your data safe and gives you control over what information you share and who can see it.

How can I sign up?

An invitation will be sent to all members on February 14. Be sure to use the invitation link! If you don’t, you will need to contact the church later for a new invitation. Use a browser (not the app) to set up a new account. You may receive an email stating that your “security settings have been changed.” If you are already using Realm, nothing will be changed and you can simply ignore that message.

Is there an app?

Yes! In the app store, search for “Connect-Our Church Community” by ACS. The Realm Connect app is available for both iOS and Android. You can access Realm both on the internet and with the app.

Where is my giving information?

When Realm is first launched, you will see your contributions in the Giving tab.

Can I make my pledge in Realm?

Beginning in 2021 you can submit your pledge with the app. More details about contributions through Realm will be available at a later date.

Questions?

Contact a staff member if you need additional assistance.

Abby Huber (252-6336, ahuber@gracestlukes.org) General Assistance Chapman Morrow (252-6328, cmorrow@gracestlukes.org) Membership Lucy Owens (252-6333, lowens@gracestlukes.org) General Assistance Linda Stine (252-6324, lstine@gracestlukes.org) Contributions

Realm FAQ (questions so far)

DOES MY SPOUSE NEED A SEPARATE LOGIN?

DIRECTORY: Access our secure member directory anytime. (Realm replaces the previous Shelby WebView directory). GROUP COMMUNICATIONS: Groups, committees, and others will stay in touch through Realm. CONTRIBUTIONS: Your complete contributions and pledge information will be available in Realm.

WILL MY SPOUSE SEE MY CONTRIBUTIONS INFORMATION?

WHY DO I NEED A REALM ACCOUNT?

YES. Each member should have their own account so you are connected with your own groups and events and are able to update your individual profile.

IT DEPENDS… If you pledge together, both you and your spouse will see the same information. If you pledge separately, contributions information is only visible to the individual.

DO I NEED THE APP?

NO. The Realm app is very convenient, but you can always use Realm on the web.

Outreach Ministry Food Pantry Facts by Juan Fuentes We are grateful to GSL School second graders who made Christmas bags for the Food Pantry clients. Our appreciation to Ms. Sara Ralston for organizing it and to the parents for their support. This is our year-end report as we usually run about two months behind from the Messenger calendar. 2019 was a very busy year, probably our busiest since 2014. In 2019 we served 670 households: 1,001 adults, 1,142 children, and 173 seniors. Our volunteers performed 313 hours of work – picking up food, shopping, re-stocking, packing, cleaning and organizing – to keep the “the little food pantry with a BIG heart” ready to serve our clients. Our thanks to all the parishioners and friends who help us with food and financial donations. Mark your calendars! Food Pantry Sunday is March 29, the last Sunday of March. We ask you to bring tuna, peanut butter, dried milk, toiletries, hygiene products, and toilet paper. Welcome to our new volunteer, Jennie Van Deveer Volunteers are always needed! To volunteer, call Juan Fuentes at 901-849-7033 or email juanjf7777 at aol.com. “The war against hunger is truly mankind’s war of liberation.” – John F. Kennedy
