Third Thursday is well-known for a great evening which includes a good meal, fellowship and fun with friends old and new and an excellent program. This month -- for the first time -- we have combined fun, fellowship and excellent speaker in the person of GSL's Matt Crow. Matt is famous for his ability to make the discussion of parish finances entertaining and he will surely bring his way with words and his wit to Third Thursday. His working title is "Two Episcopalians and a Greek Orthodox walk into a bookstore." Come hear how Matt teamed up with Christy Yarbro and John Vergos to (re)start Memphis's largest independent bookstore, Novel. Matt is planning to bring plenty of spreadsheets, poems, and dirty jokes to tell you a story that could only happen in Memphis. Who would want to miss this?! Will there still be dinner and fellowship? Absolutely. Come to the parish hall at 6 p.m. on the 17th. Reservations for dinner ($15) MUST be made by Tuesday, January 15. We cannot emphasize enough our need to know a correct number for the caterer. Call the office (901-272-7425) email lucy@gracestlukes.org or sign up online at www.gracestlukes. org/events/third-thursday. Betty Peyton and Julie Denman, Coordinators
2019 Grace St. Luke’s Women’s Retreat Saying Yes to Joy Friday Evening Feb. 22 – Sunday Morning Feb. 24 The annual Grace St. Luke's women’s retreat at St. Columba will be from dinner Friday evening, February 22, until noon Sunday, February 24. The Rev. Amy George, associate rector at Grace St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, will again be our wise and witty guide as we consider “joy.” Where is it? What is it? Who is it? This concept resonates deeply as we all yearn in different ways for the essence of “joy.” The women’s retreat provides the opportunity to join with a diverse group of women to deepen old friendships and develop new ones. The group enjoys the peace and beauty of St. Columba with rooms, meals and group activities taking place in the lodge. Participants have the opportunity to participate in group activities such as guided spiritual development opportunities, yoga, walks, games, sitting by the fire as well as plenty of time and space for naps, reading, meditation, socializing and handwork.

Church Athletics 2019 Spring Soccer GSL Church sponsors a Spring Soccer Program for JK–4th Grades. It’s a 6 game “mini-season” running March 29–May 18. The season is designed to continue soccer skill development during the spring. We strive to keep teams together from the previous fall and no assessments are needed. Due to the spring soccer participation numbers, we are not able to keep all previous fall teams exactly the same. So, for ONE year, we plan for teams (fall and spring) to remain the same. By design, a Parent Liaison helps coordinate and direct this program. Please email Christi at christi@gracestlukes.org, or call 901-825-7353 if interested in volunteering for this position. Spring Soccer Registration is January 1-31 and can be accessed through the GSL Church website at http://www.gracestlukes.org/ spring-soccer/ beginning Jan 1. Please refer to the website listed above for ALL information regarding Spring Soccer. Registration fills-up quickly, so please register sooner than later.

Outreach Ministry Celebrating 10 Years of Second Chances A Profile of GSL Grantee Midsouth Sober Living MidSouth Sober Living (MSL) received its first GSL Outreach grant in October 2018 and we are pleased to welcome them to our network of servant ministries. The organization was founded in 2008 when MSL opened its doors to those in early recovery with no safe place to go. MSL is the only sober living facility in Memphis that accepts residents without a job or other means to pay a weekly rental fee of $100. During their first 3 years MSL had one center that housed 12 men. In 2018 MSL provided safe affordable, and most importantly, alcohol-and drug-free housing to 153 men and 36 women who might otherwise end up on the streets. MSL facilities follow the 12 Step Program philosophy. This program provides the spiritual basis for MSL’s mission. One of MSL’s major initiatives is its Judicare facility, which increased the organization’s capacity to house up to 83 residents. Judicare is unique because it partners with Shelby County’s Drug Court, Veterans Court and Mental Health Court to help streamline the recovery process for Court participants. Judicare is an innovative model that could one day serve as the national standard for recovery in the criminal justice system, and it is the only one of its kind in the country. MSL and First Step Recovery Centers are currently looking for a facility to open a Judicare for women. MSL needs volunteers to donate food, clothing, help people find jobs and assist with resume writing. All of MSL’s facilities are in the Midtown area. For more information on how to support MSL contact Walter Williams at wwilliams@midsouthsoberliving.org. The GSL Outreach Liaison to MSL is Barbara King at mimikingx6@outlook.com.
Food Pantry Facts by Juan Fuentes
We are grateful to the GSL School 5th graders, Ms. Becky, Mr. Lamar, the parents, and all involved in their food drive. We have food that hopefully will last us for a couple of months. Thank you to all Food Pantry volunteers—Hunter, Rivers, Gayle, and Carol Ann—for helping with packing and shelving. Big kudos go to all the students who helped with the distribution and transportation of the food. Their enthusiasm and energy made it possible to finish in less than two hours. The 2nd graders took a tour of the Food Pantry and they are awesome. Thank you to their teachers: Ms. Amie, Ms. Kristen, and Ms. Sara. They made Christmas stockings that were distributed in the Food Pantry! Another big thank you goes out to the GSL School 1st graders who made "Blessing Bags" during their Christmas party. First grade parents pictured: Julie Markham, Brooke Shannon, Mandy Chauhan, Jenn Gibbs, Natalie Davis. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!
