2020: A New Year with Our New Day The Rev. Ollie V. Rencher, Rector

Just as each new day offers opportunities to begin again the earthly journey of life, each new calendar year does the same and more. The Year of Our Lord 2020 in life within and beyond Grace-St. Luke’s is rich, because so is each of us who makes up the body of Christ in this corner of the kingdom of God. Within and around us are blessings known and unknown, and the holy gifts of time, talent, and treasure to be offered to the glory of God, our New Day.

In 1978, John David of Wales wrote the words to “You Are the New Day” when life challenges were higher than normal, the world was in a state of unrest and far from peace, and he was placing hope within himself. Ultimately, he surrendered his hope into the Divine as the source of new beginnings and the New Day. It is my prayer that we will approach 2020 with God, our New Day, at the center of our being and doing, reflecting and listening often to the words of a fellow pilgrim on the journey of life. The King’s Singers have taken these words to new levels!

“You Are the New Day” I will love you more than me and more than yesterday if you can but prove to me you are the new day. | Send the sun in time for dawn, let the birds Reflecting on the years that are past, I am inspired all hail the morning. Love of life will urge me say, and humbled by God’s love, steadfastness, grace, and abundance that brings us to a new year with our you are the new day. | When I lay me down at night, knowing we must pay, thoughts occur that this night New Day. This turn invites all Christians to focus even more on the mission of the Church to restore might stay yesterday. |Thoughts that we as humans small could slow worlds and end it all lie around me all people to unity with God and each other in Christ. As well, this turn invites GSL to do all things where they fall, before the new day. | One more day when time is running out for ev’ryone, like a breath I necessary to support our parish vision is to be a thriving community of hope, belonging, and healing knew would come, I reach for a new day. | Hope is my philosophy, just needs days in which to be, love through worship, parish life, and service, and who rejoices in the love of Jesus to transform the world. of life means hope for me, born on a new day. – John David Our life in Christ and the season of Epiphany Godspeed and blessings as we try, especially call us to be individual beacons of light to the world in thought, word, and deed, ever mindful of the way of love. And as we continue to receive so – The Reverend Ollie V. Rencher, Rector much from our New Day, faith calls us to pray as if it all depends on God and to live as if it all depends on us. Our 2020 actions are bound to transform both us and the world. Grace-St. Luke's Episcopal Church Vision Statement Our Vision is to be a thriving community of hope, belonging, and healing through worship, parish life, and service, and who rejoices in the love of Jesus to transform the world.

2020 GSL Spring Soccer Online Registration January 1-31

January Schedule

www.gracestlukes.org/spring-soccer

GSL Church sponsors a Spring Soccer Program for JK–4th Grades. The season is March 27 – May 16. It is designed to continue soccer skill development during the spring. We strive to keep teams together from the previous fall season so no assessments are needed. Depending on participation numbers, previous fall teams might NOT be exactly the same, but for ONE YEAR we strive for all teams (fall and spring) to remain the same. Spring Soccer Registration is January 1-31 and can be accessed through the GSL Church website at www. gracestlukes.org/spring-soccer beginning January 1, 2020 Please refer to the website listed for ALL information regarding Spring Soccer. Registration fills-up quickly, so please register sooner than later. *Some challenges with our Spring Soccer Program: 1. We don't have weekly GSL field usage for practices, as it is utilized by the school for their baseball season; therefore, participants will travel a bit farther for practices. In previous years, we rented the former Memphis Catholic Middle and High School field for additional practice space, but we no longer have usage of this field due to the new Compass Midtown School campus. So, currently, we are renting Tobey Field for practices. 2. We have a vibrant Baseball/Softball/T-Ball Program and an Extended Basketball League (for 3rd & 4th grades) that overlaps with this season. This creates some challenges with scheduling all sports practices and games. The impact of these programs will be regularly re-evaluated and we’ll make any adjustments as needed.

Outreach Ministry Outreach Committee Announces 2019 Grant Awards Each year, the parish Outreach Committee awards grants to non-profit organizations to support the outreach charge to further the “… Gospel imperative to feed the hungry, clothe and shelter the needy, care for the sick and visit the imprisoned, as well as the Christian call to be an instrument of healing in our broken world.” The GSL Outreach Committee met on October 11 to review applications and recommend to the Vestry the funding of nineteen grants totaling $51,000 to the following GSL Servant Ministry Partners.

General Operating Grant, $3,000 Kindred Place Child Advocacy Center MIFA Friends for Life Samaritan Counseling Center Gilda's Club

Neighborhood Christian Center Church Health A Step Ahead Foundation Mid-South Sober Living Thistle & Bee Multi-National Ministries Porter Leath Dorothy Day House

General Operating Grant, $2,000 Living Grace Special Projects Grant, $2,000 Camp Able St. George's

One of the criteria the Outreach Committee uses to evaluate funding requests is whether the organization provides opportunities for parishioners to volunteer service. Contacts for each are listed on the Outreach Volunteer page of the GSL website (www.gracestlukes. org/volunteer) and in the committee’s new servant ministry resource booklet. Servant Ministry Partners are agencies and programs supported by GSL through which we serve our neighbors, beyond and within its doors. Support is derived from funds the Vestry provides for Outreach, donations designated for Outreach ministries and clergy discretionary funds to further the mission of these agencies and programs.

Food Pantry Facts by Juan Fuentes The GSL School students collected food for the Food Pantry and the Food Bank. The Food Pantry received a large amount of food that will last us for about two to three months. Thank you to all the students, parents, and Ms. Becky who always look for ways of helping “the little food pantry with a BIG heart.” Thank you to the volunteers who helped organize, boxed, and brought the food to the Food Pantry: Elise Stratton, Georgia LeJuwaan, Hunter Rittenberry, Maureen Kennedy, and Nora Conaway. We got everything done in little over two hours. Through November 30, 2019, we have served 613 households and 2,000 people, including 1,030 children, and approximately 257 volunteer hours. Our gratitude to all the volunteers who make the Food Pantry run smoothly to serve the community. We are now serving two agencies that issue their own vouchers, Hope House and Door of Hope. Our thanks to all the parishioners and friends who help us with food and financial donations. Mark your calendars! Food Pantry Sunday is March 29, the last Sunday of March. We ask you to bring tuna, peanut butter, dried milk, toiletries, hygiene products, and toilet paper. Volunteers are always needed! To volunteer, call Juan Fuentes at 901-849-7033 or email juanjf7777 at aol.com. “Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.” Proverbs 19:17

Calvary’s Room in the Inn Clothes Closet

Calvary Episcopal Church hosts Room in the Inn on Sunday nights (November-January) and serves over 200 breakfasts to homeless and poor neighbors on Sunday mornings. The community outreach program at Calvary needs donations: Men’s jeans, socks (even single socks), underwear, shoes or sneakers (size 9 or larger for men), sweaters, T-shirts, coats, slacks, warm jackets, rain gear, warm hats and gloves, blankets, sleeping bags, and toiletries. A collection box will be located at the GSL LeMaster entrance lobby for donations to be delivered to Calvary. Thank you! Juan Fuentes, GSL Outreach Team member

Grace-St. Luke’s Volunteers—Dr. David Hickey

This is the first in a series of Messenger articles highlighting GSL parishioners serving our community as volunteers with nonprofit organizations. If you know of a parishioner whose volunteer work should be featured in a future article, please email James Drummond at drummondjamesf at gmail.com.

A parishioner at GSL for almost 50 years, David is a volunteer physician at Church Health, the faith-based provider of medical care to Memphis’ uninsured working population. David first got acquainted with Church Health when he was with Conrad Pearson Clinic and the providers there did pro bono consults and surgery for Church Health patients. Following David’s retirement in 2012, Dr. Scott Morris the founder and CEO of Church Health urged him to join Church Health’s corps of on-site volunteer physicians. David agreed and has found that working every Friday at Church Health is one of the most rewarding aspects of his retirement. Along with his wife Sidney, David is a native of Chattanooga. He came to Memphis to attend medical school at the University of Tennessee. Sidney, who for many years has helped plan weddings at GSL, moved to Memphis following their marriage. Sidney graduated from Sienna College after stints at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and LSU. David and Sidney have two children, daughter Kacey and son Jon-Paul, both currently living in Memphis, and they have been blessed with three grandchildren. Kacey attends GSL and is active in our choir. David says that the most rewarding aspect of his volunteer activity at Church Health is mentoring the “scholars” who assist him in organizing his Friday clinics at the Church Health facility at Crosstown Concourse. Church Health scholars are recent college graduates who plan to attend medical school or obtain an advanced degree in the medical field. They also shadow David as he diagnoses and treats patients. When necessary, David refers Church Health patients for surgery to his former colleagues at Conrad Pearson as well as to other volunteer physicians the community. David’s professional relationships developed through 45 years of practicing in Memphis are an asset for Church Health. David also enjoys being actively involved with Church Health’s Family Medicine residency program started several years ago in partnership with Baptist Hospital. Counseling the residents allows David to contribute to the training of the next generation of doctors. Please join the GSL Outreach Committee in celebrating David’s commitment to serving the Memphis community as a volunteer physician. Church Health, a long-time recipient of GSL Outreach grants, welcomes volunteers in the clinic as well as in other departments. For more information contact Sharon Jones at joness@churchhealth.org.

POSTMASTER: Please do not hold. Dated Material. Thank You for Investing in Life at Grace-St. Luke’s 2020 Stewardship Campaign Many thanks to all who’ve made financial pledges to support life at Grace-St. Luke’s in 2020. For those who haven’t, there’s still time! Each pledge (an estimate of what you plan to give monthly or weekly) helps the team of finance committee, vestry, and rector to budget for our essential ministries and outstanding programs. As a faith community, all operations and ministries are funded by financial commitments from each household, and every pledge amount matters. Your pledge gift becomes cans on the shelves of our Food Pantry that has fed 600 households this year and meals for the approximately 100 weekly guests of More Than A Meal. Your pledge gift helps to fund significant property maintenance and utilities expenses, increasing healthcare costs for the staff and clergy, and supplies necessary for weekly worship services. A total of 287 pledges and alms (non-pledged giving) have supported the 2019 budget, and we are encouraged by pledges arriving almost daily toward the 100% participation goal for 2020. If you’ve not already done so, please prayerfully consider how you might invest in life at Grace-St. Luke’s and make a pledge for 2020 by returning a Pledge Form to the church office, placing it in the alms basin (offering plate), or pledging online at www. gracestlukes.org/pledge. In faith and gratitude for life at Grace-St. Luke’s, Allison and Steven King, 2020 Stewardship Chairs
