A Summer of Praying, Learning, and Playing The Rev. Ollie V. Rencher, Rector

“If you believe and I believe and we together pray. The Holy Spirit must come down and set God’s people free; and set God’s people free, and set God’s people free. The Holy Spirit must come down and set God’s people free.” -Zimbabwean traditional, Wonder, Love, and Praise #806 At the last all-school chapel on May 16, we sang with gusto the above words of a well-known and favorite hymn of the school community. The image whereby “we together pray” is one that has stayed with me as I consider how we might spend summertime in life at GSL. Summertime affords time and space to choose many things. In this new season of parish life, I invite you and yours to consider radical commitments to weekly praying, learning, and playing through offerings scheduled by the clergy-staff team, vestry, and lay leaders at Grace-St. Luke’s. Just as God never takes a break from us, may we never take a break from God and what might be offered in the ways of worship, formation (learning), fellowship, and service in Jesus’ name. Summer Sundays include worship at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m., and the 5:30 p.m. service will feature guest instrumentalists; 8:45-9:25 a.m. breakfast; and weekly 9:30-10:15 a.m. intergenerational “Conversation with the Clergy” special topics and occasional guest speakers. During Vacation Bible School for children on Wednesday nights (June 5, 12, 26, July 10, 17), adult dinner and unique formation offerings are scheduled (5:30-7:45 p.m.). An open-to-all Contemplative Prayer Group will meet on Sundays, June 30, July 28, August 25, 9-9:30 a.m. in the Chapel. Our youth will serve the Memphis community July 14-19 through a partnership with Memphis Youth Mission and other activities will be announced by our new Director of Youth Formation, Amzie Williams. By popular demand,

Public Theology continues at Celtic Crossing on June 6, July 11, August 1, and September 5. Supper Club groups will gather for those who signed-up during the May registration period. Other occasional events will be announced to gather the parish community either at GSL or around Memphis at music venues, eateries, museums, and more. Indeed, praying, learning, and playing will be abundant at GSL during Sumer 2019 to enrich our lives and build community among us. Let us use summertime to invite others to share in the abundance of this vibrant parish and to keep GSL at the center of our lives and places of being. Praying, learning, and playing are bound to bless us even more. Our Parish Vision is to be a thriving community of hope, belonging, and healing through worship, parish life, and service, and who rejoices in the love of Jesus to transform the world. Godspeed and blessings as we try, –The Reverend Ollie V. Rencher, Rector

So far, 10-15 people of a wide age range have attended monthly first Thursday gatherings of laid-back, open conversations about a variety of clergy-facilitated topics. By popular demand and to allow others the chance to attend, events will continue during the summer months according to the following schedule. Past topics have included: What’s the Deal with Lent?; Sin: What exactly is sin? And why are Episcopalians so often afraid to talk about it?; and Practicing Resurrection: How To Live With Hope. Upcoming gatherings: June 6 Pentecost: Celebrating The Holy Spirit and Our Eternal Life (The Rev. Ollie V. Rencher) July 11 Evangelism: Why we are called to it, what it could look like, and how to not be afraid of it. (The Rev. Meredith Jane Day) Aug. 1 Holy Envy: Finding God in Other Faiths (The Rev. Outreach Ministry

In 1876 Porter-Leath opened its doors as an orphanage to serve the needs of abandoned children and those whose parents died from malaria. Over the years, foster care and social security replaced the need for orphanages to house children on a permanent basis, and the mission of Porter-Leath evolved to that of early childhood development, with focus on preschool readiness for kindergarten by providing a safe, nurturing environment for at-risk children.

Porter-Leath serves as the sole Early Head Start operator for Shelby County, and its programs are comprehensive. Their long-term goals are to break the cycles of poverty through proven early childhood education and by providing support to families in a number of ways: prenatal care, health care for infants and toddlers, educating mothers about child care and nurturing, and providing “wrap-around services” for children and families. Books from Birth is now funded and administered by Porter-Leath.

For the past nine years, Porter-Leath has been the recipient of a Grace-St. Luke’s Community Support Grant. For those wishing to volunteer their time at Porter-Leath, opportunities at several locations across the city include reading in classrooms, playing with blocks, or just spending one-on-one time with a child that needs extra help learning their letters, numbers, shapes, and colors. Parishioners can choose to volunteer individually or in a group Monday through Friday between 9 and 11 a.m.

MORE THAN A MEAL

Our Ministry of Hospitality and Dignity By Edith Heller, Outreach Committee

Jesus told us to serve Him by preaching the Gospel to others in our acts – by doing the work of feeding the poor, clothing, comforting, and encouraging all people. Imagine sitting down for dinner with Jesus! We do it every time we go to the Communion rail for bread and wine; we do it when we sit down with 100 MTAM guests each Sunday.

We see Jesus in the smiles, the stories, the laughter, the gratitude, and empty plates. Since 2001, MTAM has annually served nearly 5,000 people with 10,000 plates of food. It is a large, organized, lovely dinner party for Jesus with flowers and music, and a joyful way to serve the Lord in the Gospel imperative to feed the hungry.

What is a dinner without a fine chef ? We have seven. Our gratitude to Barb Boucher from Holy Communion, Susie Carlson from St. Luke’s Lutheran, Cyndi Detty of Annunciation Church, Porsha Goodman of Door of Hope, and Mike Davis, Arthur Nave, and Jerry Sanders from GSL. This year our Vestry, led

by Kirk Patton, will serve barbecue a couple of Sundays. Our chefs can create a hearty chicken casserole, spice up black-eyed peas with turkey bacon, disguise chopped kale in broccoli salad, grill beef patties, bake cookies, stir outstanding stews, and make fresh banana pudding.

During summer, we always need extra volunteers while our regulars and students are on vacations. Pick a couple of dates for your family to join us from 3:15 to 5 for the dinner party.

To volunteer, contact a team captain: 1st Sunday Jonathan Large, Jonathan.Large at musowls.org 2nd Sunday Mike Davis, mwdavis at gmail.com 3rd Sunday Ruthie Lentz, rlentz at comcast.net 4th Sunday Edith Heller, hrheller3 at comcast.net 5th Sunday Murray McKay, murraymckay at comcast.net

Last month, I asked a guest why he came to MTAM. Alonzo said, “I’m single and like eating with friends, like Jesus and the Last Supper. He had friends with his dinner.” Come join the dinner party. You might just meet Jesus.

Food Pantry Facts by Juan Fuentes

We are grateful for the generosity and many gifts of GSL parishioners. As I reported last month, our meat freezer stopped working and we lost a good amount of meat. To address that situation, we had to purchase a new freezer. We have received generous donations to cover the cost of this replacement. We now have a new and bigger meat freezer. May God bless us always! April, Number of Families served: 57 households, which included 80 adults, 70 children, and 8 seniors. Volunteer Hours for April: 23 hours, which included 10 hours distributing food, 3.5 hours Food Bank pick-up and shelving, 4.5 hours shopping and shelving, 5 hours cleaning and re-stocking, not including the hours spent by volunteer packers. The next Food Pantry Sunday will be June 30! We ask you to bring tuna, peanut butter, dried milk, toiletries, and hygiene products. Volunteers are always needed! To volunteer, call Juan Fuentes, 901-849-7033, or email juanjf7777 at aol.com. “When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed.” ― Maya Angelou

The Use of “Enriching Our Worship” during Eastertide. The General Convention of the Episcopal Church (1997) authorized Enriching Our Worship as one of the Supplemental Liturgical Materials to the Book of Common Prayer, in keeping with our Church’s continual seeking of an authorized language of Common Prayer capable of expressing what we believe about God, as well as reflecting on our own corporate and individual relationship to the Godhead. This supplement is not intended to supplant the Book of Common Prayer, but rather to provide additional resources to assist worshiping communities wishing to expand the language, images and metaphors used in worship. Enriching Our Worship liturgies will be used occasionally during certain seasons in life at GSL.
