Practicing Resurrection The Rev. Ollie V. Rencher, Rector

Eastertide (The Great Vigil of Easter, April 20 – The Vigil of Pentecost, June 8) invites followers of Jesus to live joyfully our belief that God makes the impossible possible. The Risen Lord is a testament to the reality that death is not the final answer. Eternal life is made possible by the God who creates, redeems, and sanctifies, and has the power to raise the dead. It strikes me that the world in which we live and move and have our being is one that desperately could benefit from how we might live, love, and serve others in thanksgiving for the Resurrection. As an Easter people, we are baptized to practice resurrection with and through our lives. The worship, formation program, events, and outreach offerings of Grace-St. Luke’s are designed to inform and support our efforts to practice resurrection. Life at GSL for the month of May is full of opportunities to engage. The Winter-Spring 2019 Calendar of worship, programs, and events is loaded for our benefit, and so that we might invite guests to participate in any and all that we offer on Sundays and other days. All are invited to join and reflect with others on resurrection through formation offerings, such as “Practicing Resurrection: How To Live With Hope” hosted by me at Public Theology (May 2), “Hope in Scripture” with Dr. Mitzi

Minor (May 12, 19), and “A Story of Hope and Healing in Mississippi” with Bishop Duncan M. Gray III (May 26). Our common life always is better when the faithful gather for worship, learning, service, and fellowship, whenever such opportunities are presented. Our Vision is to be a thriving community of hope, belonging, and healing through worship, parish life, and service, and who rejoices in the love of Jesus to transform the world. I am grateful for the ministry privilege to practice resurrection with you, and look forward to an exciting future together as we set our Easter hearts, minds, and actions on our vision for life at GSL. Godspeed and blessings as we try, – The Reverend Ollie V. Rencher, Rector

Praise God for Waffle Shop Waitstaff As the workers gathered on Friday after the last Waffle Shop and sang the Doxology, the words had a special meaning. “Praise God from whom all blessings flow.” Many blessings to all GSL people who so graciously stepped up to help us. We had at least eight people a week throughout Lent. It was a wonderful experience to be able to serve so many. Thank you all for your service and until next year, the aprons are washed and ready and we are already craving Fish Pudding. Choral Evensong

scripture and to spend time in quiet prayer, while listening to and participating in music. The music selected for choir and congregation seeks to bring worshippers into deeper understanding of the mysteries of faith.

All parishioners and friends are invited to GSL at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 12, to experience one of the richest services of our Anglican/Episcopal heritage: Choral Evensong.

On Sunday, May 12, at 5:30 p.m., a service of evensong will be presented jointly by the Canterbury Choir of Grace-St. Luke’s and the Boys and Girls Choir of Calvary Episcopal Church. (Please note: On Sunday, May 5, at 5 p.m. Evensong will take place at Calvary Episcopal, 102 N. Second Street.)

Evensong is The Book of Common Prayer’s service of Evening Prayer (from the Daily Office) led by a choir with assistance from other lay ministers and a member of the clergy. The 30 to 45 minute service is an intentional time to come away from the busy-ness of life to meditate on

If you plan to attend, spread the word, and bring others. If evensong will be a new experience, you are in for a treat and might find this article interesting, “The Atheist’s Favorite Service: The Wonder of Choral Evensong.” [www. englandcast.com/2015/10/evensong]

Belvedere Chamber Music Festival The thirteenth annual Belvedere Chamber Music Festival (www.belvederefestival.org) will be presented at Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on June 19-22. Performers are members of the Luna Nova Ensemble (www.lunanova.org) and guest artists from around the country. We have been very fortunate over the years to have host families house our out of town participants. We need a few more host families for this year’s festival. Students will be in Memphis June 19-22 and ensemble members from June 16-22. All of their meals and transportation will be taken care of and they will be involved with Festival activities during the day. Please contact Patricia Gray at pgray at pgray.net or call 901-493-0958 if you are able to help with this. The concerts will include works by Bach, Debussy, Prokofiev, Previn, Bernstein and others. Evening concerts start at 7:30 and afternoon concerts are Friday and Saturday at 3:00. All concerts are free and open to the public. Complete programs will be available at www.belvederefestival.org/ concerts.html by June 1. Once again Luna Nova and the Beethoven Club sponsored a student composition contest for academic composers under the age of 30. Winners will come to Memphis for the Festival and have their compositions performed by the Luna Nova Ensemble. This year there were 59 entrants from 5 countries. This years winners are: Mike Zhou (New England Conservatory of Music) Emily Joy Sullivan (SUNY Fredonia) Paul Novak (Rice University) We are delighted to be featured on WKNO-FM 91.1 Live Lunch on Wednesday, June 19, from 12-1 p.m.

Parish Staff News from The Rector I am pleased to share an update about the youth formation staff at Grace-St. Luke’s. Following the interim arrangement (August 2018 – May 2019) of our part-time Youth Formation Associates, Addison Combs and Jess Steenbergen, and Youth Formation Intern, Zeke Smith, a full-time Director of Youth Formation has been called to the GSL parish community.

Amzie J. Williams

Mr. Amzie J. Williams will begin ministry as Director of Youth Formation at the end of May. Currently, Amzie serves Episcopal Youth Community (EYC) Coordinator at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Oxford, Mississippi, Intern and Musician for Canterbury: The Episcopal Church at Ole Miss (ECOM), and on the Division of Youth (DOY) Leadership Council for the Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi. His youth ministry leadership in Mississippi includes Happening Reunion Co-Director and Camp Bratton-Green Winter Solstice Staff. In May, he will graduate with Bachelor of Arts degrees in Psychology and Public Policy & Leadership from the University of Mississippi. To life at GSL, he will bring numerous gifts and talents, enthusiasm, and professionalism to further develop our youth program, and call on adults to serve as class teachers and mentors. Addison Combs will offer support as his part-time Youth Formation Intern.

Upon the acceptance of my offer, Amzie responded, “I am honored and pleased to accept, and eager to meet and join the vibrant Grace-St. Luke’s community. Having greatly enjoyed growing up, being formed, and working within my current diocese, it will be an exciting venture to become part of a new community of faith by leading the youth of GSL in their own formation through program offerings that are educational, fun, creative, deep, adventurous, musical, and in service to others.” Amzie has received solid recommendations from seasoned clergy and lay persons with whom he has worked in various youth engagement and administrative roles in the Diocese of Mississippi. At the of May, Amzie will begin serving in a part-time capacity primarily to overlap with Addison, Jess, and Zeke; connect with parish and school youth and their families during the remainder of Spring 2019; and begin program planning for Summer-Fall 2019 & Winter-Spring-Summer 2020. I wish to thank members of my recruitment advisory circle for their service and time with him: Grant Adams, Patrick Burnett, Patty Liles, Andy Nix, and Virginia Rowland. They along with Nina Callan and Lauri Prather will serve as the Welcome and Transition Team for the arrival and introduction of Director of Youth Formation, Amzie Williams, to Grace-St. Luke’s and Memphis. ============= The Reverend Ollie V. PHF: Hope in Scripture: Practice Resurrection with Dr. Mitzi Minor. Memphis Theological Seminary

Professor, Dr. Mitzi Minor will help us to explore even more deeply the gift of hope in the resurrection of Jesus. Christians often speak of believing in resurrection without unpacking what it is and what it did for followers of Jesus. It was a “game changer” for the world. How did it open their eyes? What did it do for their lives? How might we practice resurrection today?

Outreach Ministry Samaritan Counseling Centers of the Mid-South Samaritan Counseling Centers of the Mid-South offer a ministry of healing to those seeking a balance of emotional, relational, and spiritual health. Responding to the psychological and educational needs of individuals, families, couples, and groups by providing an environment of compassion and confidentiality in which feelings are honored, values and beliefs are upheld, and resources are available to ensure that financial limitations never preclude care. Our wellness-oriented philosophy emphasizes achieving a balance of emotional, relational, and spiritual health. SCC’s mission has always stressed the importance of care and access for the “The least of these.” These services are delivered through a dedicated staff of clinical professionals who respond to the psychological and spiritual needs of individuals, families, couples, and groups by providing counseling, psychological assessment and crisis intervention services in an environment of compassion and confidentiality where the feelings and beliefs of those we serve are honored and their values are upheld. All who enter our doors are welcomed and affirmed. Each year, SCC has continued to see an increase in the number of clients we serve. One of the primary sources of this increase is the decreasing options for quality therapeutic services in the MidSouth area as well as our Sliding Scale and Low-Fee Assistance program. In addition, SCC continues to become more widely known in the Mid-South via social media and word of mouth as a source of high-quality and compassionate care, which is respectful of all individuals' beliefs, values and issues. For the past 7 years, SCC has been the recipient of Grace-St. Luke’s Community Support Grant. Grace-St. Luke’s support has been instrumental in our ability to serve those with limited resources. Grace St. Luke’s Support Grant was used almost entirely to help fund our Sliding Scale/Low-Fee Assistance for individuals who do not have the resources to receive compassionate, high-quality and professional therapeutic services. Also, SCC appreciates any type of visible support or promotion that Grace-St. Luke’s could provide such as an info table after any given Sunday service, a “Minute for Mission” about SCC, brochure holders, referrals by clergy, staff, and parishioners, etc. SCC staff is also available for Wednesday, Thursday, or Sunday classes or programs covering a wide variety of topics. Further, as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, SCC has always operated with a bare bones budget. As we changed our business model, our budget and bottom line improved but we still operate frugally so that our resources can be directed towards those most in need of

receiving our services. Each of our locations/sites is provided by our supporting congregations. However, we supply, decorate, and manage each site. We always have a need for updated office equipment (copiers, computers, etc.), office supplies, therapist office/site furniture (chairs, sofas, desks, decorations, painting and spruce-up), etc. Donations of these items has always been a way to better manage our financial resources. In addition, SCC greatly benefits from the volunteer efforts of our supporting congregations in our fundraising efforts to help support our ministry. Samaritan Counseling Centers of the Mid-South remain greatly appreciative for Grace-St. Luke’s long–time generous support and strong commitment to our ministry and mission. Our ability to achieve our goal of providing quality and compassionate care is possible only through your generous support. Peace and Blessings, Earle Donelson, Ph.D. Clinical Lead, Samaritan Counseling Centers

Food Pantry Facts by Juan Fuentes

Our thanks to the GSL School 5th graders for making Easter packets for the Food Pantry clients. After many years of service, our meat freezer stopped working and, unfortunately, we lost a good amount of meat. This freezer served us well, as it did the Crossmen who donated it to us. We have purchased a new freezer in the hopes that it will serve us for a long time. As always, we are blessed with generous parishioners, friends, and dedicated volunteers. March, Number of Families served: 35 households, which included 46 adults, 47 children, and no seniors. Volunteer Hours for March: 24.5 hours, which included 8 hours distributing food, 4.5 hours Food Bank pick-up and shelving, 4 hours shopping and shelving, 8 hours cleaning and re-stocking, not including the hours spent by volunteer packers. The next Food Pantry Sunday will be June 30! Volunteers are always needed! To volunteer, call Juan Fuentes, 901-849-7033, or email juanjf7777 at aol.com. “The measure of the greatness of a society is found in the way it treats those most in need, those who have nothing apart from their poverty!” ― Pope Francis

The Use of “Enriching Our Worship” during Eastertide. The General Convention of the Episcopal Church (1997) authorized Enriching Our Worship as one of the Supplemental Liturgical Materials to the Book of Common Prayer, in keeping with our Church’s continual seeking of an authorized language of Common Prayer capable of expressing what we believe about God, as well as reflecting on our own corporate and individual relationship to the Godhead. This supplement is not intended to supplant the Book of Common Prayer, but rather to provide additional resources to assist worshiping communities wishing to expand the language, images and metaphors used in worship. Enriching Our Worship liturgies will be used occasionally during certain seasons in life at GSL.
