September: A New Season in Life at GSL The Rev. Ollie V. Rencher, Rector

It’s hard to believe the summer months are behind us in parish life. Like many communities of faith that offer a robust variety of formation programs and special events, September at GSL marks the beginning of countless offerings for adults, youth, and children to further nurture spiritual journeys. It also increases chances to make connections with other parishioners.

On Sunday, September 8, all are invited to “Rally Day: Celebrate Life at GSL” as a way to learn more about our vestry commission areas (athletics, congregational development, fellowship, formation, outreach, pastoral care, stewardship, worship) and opportunities to offer time and talent to support their purposes. Together, each ministry area has a part in helping us to focus on our vision to be a thriving community of hope, belonging, and healing through worship, parish life, and service, and who rejoices in the love of Jesus to transform the world. In September and beyond, it is my prayer that we will offer ourselves, souls, and bodies, even more, into life at GSL to be strengthened for service to God and one another in Christ.

The newly released “Fall 2019 Formation and Worship Offerings” is the product of summertime work by the clergy-staff team to provide choices that might support members, Godspeed and blessings as we try, newcomers, and visitors on their journey with God. Based on feedback between Fall 2018 – The Reverend Ollie V. Rencher, Rector through Spring 2019 about what many adults would enjoy between fall, winter, and spring, the scheduled programs intend to offer variety, intellectual stimulation, growth, and even encourage deeper discipleship for participants. As well, the Journey to Adulthood, confirmation classes, EYC, Project Purpose, Catechesis of Midweek Worship Opportunity the Good Shepherd, and Infant and Toddler Center spaces and times for youth and children Wednesdays at Noon are ready for engagement! All of this, in concert 30-minute Holy Eucharist with Sunday and Wednesday services of Holy Communion, are available for access in this new in the Chapel season in life at GSL.

Grace-St. Luke's Episcopal Church Vision Statement Our Vision is to be a thriving community of hope, belonging, and healing through worship, parish life, and service, and who rejoices in the love of Jesus to transform the world.

September 11, 18, 25, and October 2 Becoming Beloved Community Facilitator: The Rev. Ollie V. Rencher Location: Trezevant Hall; Time: 6 – 7:30 p.m. As the Episcopal branch of the Jesus Movement, we (Episcopalians) dream and work to foster “beloved communities,” where all people may experience dignity and abundant life and see themselves and others as beloved children of God. In May 2017, the Office of the Presiding Bishop (The Most Rev. Michael B. Curry) collaborated with lay and ordained staff members and churchwide leaders to frame a path for Episcopalians to address racial injustice and grow as a community of reconcilers, justice-makers, and healers who share a passion for the dream of God. All individuals and congregations are encouraged to embrace the journey ahead as a long-term commitment as part of our spiritual formation. The Becoming Beloved Community (BBC) program provides resources for those seeking racial healing, reconciliation, and justice through interrelated commitments to: telling the truth (about our churches and race); proclaiming the dream (of beloved community); practicing the way (of love in the power of Jesus; and repairing the breach (in society and institutions). GSL Church and School adults and youth are invited to participate by registering for this four-week, curriculum-based class facilitated by the Rev. Ollie V. Rencher, Rector. (Sign up by following this link: https://tinyurl.com/GSLBecoming.)

What is the Dorothy Day House? The Dorothy Day House keeps homeless families together, creating a safe haven and a community for entire families. In typical shelters, homeless families are often separated. Men are sent to one shelter while women, girls and little boys are sent to another shelter. Parents often must place their teenage boys in foster care, or find someone willing to provide a home and care for them. This means that parents cannot stay with their older sons; fathers must leave their daughters and small sons; husbands are separated from wives. Often, rather than experience the trauma of separation, families choose to live in a vehicle or stay in uninhabitable places.

Food Pantry Sunday September 29

The whole family is welcomed at the Dorothy Day House, allowing for strengthening of family bonds. Because several families are housed at a time, the residents are able to offer mutual support and encouragement as they face and overcome the shared obstacles of poverty and homelessness. Families work together to clean and maintain the house and to cook meals. This home-like atmosphere provides a sense of security, especially for the children, fosters selfesteem and uplifts the human spirit. It creates one of the most vital ingredients for escaping poverty—hope. www.dorothydaymemphis.org

GSL Director of Music and Organist Appointed: Dr. Patrick A. Scott I am pleased to announce my appointment of Dr. Patrick A. Scott as the new lead parish musician at Grace-St. Luke’s following the June 2nd leave of former Organist– Choirmaster, Wesley Emerson, and current service of Interim Organist–Choirmaster, Debbie Smith. Director of Music and Organist, Patrick Scott will arrive in early October from the Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta, Georgia, where he has served as Organist and Associate Choirmaster since 2014. At the Cathedral, his duties consist of playing for worship services, leading the children’s chorister program, assisting with directing the Cathedral Choir and Cathedral Schola, and planning the concert series. Prior to the Cathedral, Patrick served as Music Associate and Organist at Myers Park United Methodist Church (Charlotte, NC), Organist at University Christian Church (Austin, TX), and Organist at First United Methodist Church (Tuscaloosa, AL). A native of Picayune, Mississippi, Patrick graduated with the degrees of Doctor of Musical Arts in Organ Performance and Master of Music in Organ Performance and Sacred Music from the University of Texas at Austin, and Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance from Birmingham-Southern College, and studied with organists, James Cook, Gerre Hancock, and Judith Hancock; extended education includes choral and organ studies in England and France. Master organ classes, recitals, hymn festivals, as well as performance awards and prizes in the art of organ improvisation, have been a considerable part of his formation and refinement as an exceptional organist, conductor, educator, and well-rounded church musician. As Director of Music and Organist, Patrick will be the principal organist and lead conductor of the Chancel Choir with primary responsibility for selecting the parish music repertoire in consultation with me, and in partnership with Assistant Organist and Choirmaster, Debbie Smith, who is the lead conductor of the Canterbury and St. Cecilia children’s choirs and assists with the Chancel Choir. He also will coordinate music and play for GSL School Chapel and offer hospitality to the Belvedere Chamber Music Festival. I wish to thank the Director of Music Search Advisory Team (Grant Adams, John Baur, Alice Crow, Natalie Davis, Patricia Gray, Jim Greer, Sidney Hickey, Linda Khumalo, Brenda Maguire, Lucius McGehee, Arthur Nave, Leslie Reddick, Dan Swanson), the Chancel Choir, the Wardens, and the Clergy for the many hours spent in sharing this recruitment process with me. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Patrick Scott to Grace-St. Luke’s Church and School, hold his transition from Atlanta to Memphis in your prayers, and prepare to greet him before or on Sunday, October 13. The Reverend Ollie V. Rencher, Rector

A Time of Transition In response to the questions raised about the August 22 news that the Rev. Amy George will transition from our clergy team either in or before 2020, the Vestry, Amy, and the Rector would like to share a little more with the Parish community. Fellow Parishioners, We share your sadness as we imagine a future without our cherished Associate Rector, the Rev. Amy George. Many of us on the Vestry experienced first-hand her steadying and comforting presence during the period between Rectors. Our call to the Rev. Ollie V. Rencher, though, came with the trust that he would bring a long-term vision to the Parish, and that he would discern with the Bishop and the Clergy to assemble the team of priests he needs to bring that vision to life. And the same for his development of the Staff. He has certainly lived up to that trust. We hope you’ll join us in supporting our Rector as he thoughtfully builds our Clergy-Staff team for the future. We look forward to broadening the discussion with you around this vision and our shared ministry in the weeks to come. - Your Vestry: Grant Adams, Jimpsie Ayres, Wight Boggs, Patrick Burnett (Jr. Warden), Nina Callan, Jim Greer, Linda Khumalo, Stinson Liles, Julia McDonald, Murray McKay, Kurt Patton (Sr. Warden), Charlie Pazar, Tom Stephenson, Simon Wadsworth, Gavin Wigginson My Beloved Grace-St. Luke’s, While my heart is deeply saddened as I plan for a future not among you as the Associate Rector, I must tell you how moved I am by the emotional response to the news. I have personally felt a deep connection to this Parish from the moment you welcomed me, and it has been overwhelming to have received the flood of heart-felt expressions of love, support and, yes, sadness. I hope you know that — while this was not in my plans— the process is what we priests sign up for. We know that our placements are discerned not only by us, but prayerfully by both Rectors and Bishops. I lend my support and prayers to Ollie as he builds upon his vision for the ministries in this place we all love so dearly. I hope you will continue to hold me in your prayers. Because I will definitely be holding you in mine. - The Rev. Amy George Dear Grace-St. Luke’s Parish Community, My calling, just a little over a year ago, to serve as your Rector was more meaningful than you can imagine. The Parish was and is thriving, yet your Vestry and the Rector Search Committee believed that our strong foundation positions us to go even deeper into our faith, enhance internal ministries, and serve the wider community in new ways. As we continue to stretch our faith together, there will be times of inspiration and joy, and times of discomfort and change. I share in your present sadness – and welcome the opportunity to spend as much time as needed with anyone who’d like to share it more personally with me. Perhaps the most meaningful aspect of my call to be your Rector, however, is the trust you have placed in me to steward a Parish I know so many of you value beyond words. As we experience the natural sadness of change, I hope we can – together – also draw on the excitement of possibility. Our vision is to be a thriving community of hope, belonging, and healing through worship, parish life, and service, and who rejoices in the love of Jesus to transform the world. I am committed to realizing this vision for our beloved Parish and would ask that we hold our community in prayer and grace along the way. - The Rev. Ollie V. Rencher If you have questions about this transition, please reach out directly to Kurt Patton or Patrick Burnett on behalf of the Vestry, or contact the church office to speak with Amy and/or Ollie. Meanwhile, please know that all of us will provide transition updates as more information becomes available. Thank you for your prayers, and we ask your patience, as we journey in faith together.
