Penn National Resource Centers FLAS Fellowships Information Session January 24th, 2014


What is FLAS? • Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships • Funded by the U.S. Dept. of Education & administered by the U of Penn Title VI National Resource Centers • Fellowships for Academic Year, and Summer • Goal: To assist in foreign language, area and international studies training;


Student Eligibility • U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States • UGrad: Declared majors, intermediate/advanced lang. • For AY: Fulltime (4/3 CUs), one language course, one area/int-l course per semester, or dissertation. • No pass/fail courses or incompletes • For Summer: Intensive domestic/intern-l program (6 weeks, 120-140 hours) • Fill out pre- and post-award reports & proficiency assessments; surveyed every two years for a total of eight years.


FLAS Languages @ PENN • Africa: – Amharic, Chichewa, Igbo, Maninke, Swahili, Tigrinya, Twi, Wolof, Yoruba, and Zulu • East Asia: – Chinese, Japanese, and Korean • Middle East: – Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish • South Asia: – Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Pashto, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu

Graduates: $18,000 Tuition, $15,000 Stipend UGraduates: $10,000 Tuition, $5,000 Stipend Adjustment with Financial Aid package. Eligibility: (1)Fulltime in language & area Studies coursework; (2) Fulltime dissertation abroad; (3) Fulltime in language and areas studies coursework, abroad. • Dissertators: @ Penn, take full course load; prior approval of the Department of Education; affiliation with a university or research organization for overseas • Courses: 3 CUs, 4 CUs, one language and one area studies courses


Summer FLAS • Grad. & Ugrad: $5,000 Tuition, $2,500 Stipend • Equivalent of a year's worth of college-level language study. • Domestic programs: of intensive language study at the beginning (graduates only), intermediate or advanced levels • Overseas programs: of intensive language study at the intermediate or advanced level; • Overseas programs of intensive study at the beginning level not available in United States (graduate only)

Online Application Form Transcripts of the most recent academic work, Penn or else. A curriculum vitĂŚ (CV). A one-page essay on why you need FLAS (singlespaced). Two letters of recommendations from faculty members on how a FLAS would contribute to your current program of study.

Is there a limit on the number of FLAS fellowships I can receive? 5. Can I apply to more than one National Resource Center? 6. Is a FLAS fellow allowed to work during the award period? 7. Can I use my FLAS at a different U.S. institution? 8. Can I request a Pass/Fail grade for my courses?
