“May the sound ring true in your heart for all of your days 75th Anniversary Bell - presented to Graded School by the students on October 17, 1995

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD This has been an exciting year for our community. Our board is committed to ensuring that Graded continues to thrive, both academically and financially. This includes remaining steadfast in our strategic priorities and moving forward with the Centennial Campaign, despite the circumstances of a challenging economy in Brazil. Over the last four years, our community has donated approximately R$25 million towards the Centennial Campaign. This is an incredible accomplishment. As a result, we have been able to launch the Graded Scholar Program with the first group of students entering this August, invest in our educators through the Excellence in Teaching Initiative, and plan for Phase 2 of the Graded Campus Project. We have also been able to grow our endowments significantly, so that Graded can offer the very best learning experiences for generations to come. Your support has made a profound impact, and I thank you. I would also like to thank Lee Fertig, outgoing Superintendent, for his vision that laid the foundation for the Centennial Campaign. The Board and I wish him the the very best as he joins the International School of Brussels as Head of School. We are very excited to welcome our new Superintendent Richard Boerner, from the American International School of Dhaka. His international reputation as a true leader, combined with 23 years of experience as Superintendent, Principal, and teacher at schools around the world and in the U.S. make him a perfect fit for Graded. We are confident he will embrace and advance the school’s mission and vision. Finally, I would like to thank my colleagues and fellow board members for their extraordinary commitment this year. Their dedication, hard work, and professionalism as volunteers has been incredible. Thank you outgoing board members: Renato Ochman who served for eight years, Monica Della Nina ‘83 who served eight years, Marvin Boakye who served for three years, and Consul General Dennis Hankins who served three years. I would like to welcome new 2015-2016 board members: J. Mathias von Bernuth and Rodolpho Protasio. Thank you again for your generous support. I look forward to a great year ahead. Abraços, Roberto Sallouti ‘90 President of the Board

MESSAGE FROM THE OUTGOING SUPERINTENDENT As Graded School approaches its 95th anniversary, it continues to reach new levels of excellence on all fronts. Our community’s ongoing commitment to the school’s mission and vision is inspiring and enables Graded to become even better each year. This year, nearly 400 parents, alumni, faculty, and staff donated R$4,259,691 towards the Graded Fund and Centennial Campaign. As a result, we were able to support over 40 mission-driven projects that enhanced student learning. In addition, we admitted five truly impressive students as part of our Graded Scholar Program and significantly invested in our Excellence in Teaching Initiative to ensure that we can recruit develop, and retain the very best teachers for years to come. We continue to plan for Phase 2 of the Graded Campus Project and hope to break ground by October 2015. In addition, our students continue to excel and receive a world-class education that prepares them to study at top U.S. and Brazilian universities. 70% of members of the class of 2015 were admitted to their first choice of school -- all ranked as ‘Most Competitive‘. In addition, our average MAP and SAT scores are higher than international, South American, and American school norms in all categories. I want to thank our committed teachers who provide the essential guidance, expertise, support, and passion that inspire our students every day. Please enjoy looking through the 2014-2015 Annual Report that gives an overview of financials, board and leadership team impact, college acceptances, and our giving program. You will see how your ongoing support really does make a difference in the lives of Graded students and enables us to inspire excellence, foster intercultural competence, and empower students to become engaged, ethical citizens. Finally, I would like to thank the Graded community for actively supporting me over the past six years. It has been a true honor to serve as your Superintendent. My family and I have been touched by this special community, and we will have “saudades” for you and the Graded Experience. I am thrilled to welcome incoming Superintendent, Richard Boerner, and wish him and you the best for many years to come. Abraços, Lee Fertig Outgoing Superintendent

MESSAGE FROM THE INCOMING SUPERINTENDENT I am honored and humbled to be joining you as Graded’s new Superintendent. After over two decades of working as an educator, what drew me to Graded was the strong sense of community that supports and sustains decades of academic excellence. I am thrilled to join a school that, since its founding in 1920, has promoted a culture of honoring its past, excelling in its present, and planning for its future. Graded’s long and proud history is well deserved and is supported by a visionary board, engaged and active leaders, and world-class educators. Throughout the world, Graded is known as one of the truly premier international schools. While our reputation is something to be undoubtedly proud of, we must challenge ourselves to grow beyond what we may consider capable, and aspire to reach even new levels of excellence. I am looking forward to leading this community in doing just that. As I begin my tenure, my family and I are excited to witness the Graded Experience in action. I look forward to listening and learning with parents and students alike. Undoubtedly, I am sure I will be standing alongside of you, watching them shine. Very best, Richard Boerner Incoming Superintendent

With new leadership gifts this past year, our combined endowments ended with the highest year-end balance in the school’s history at R$15,632,041.00. The Board approved to move forward with Phase 2 of the Campus Project, which includes new athletic fields, a running track, a redesigned main entrance adjacent to secure underground parking, and a renovated Student Center. OUR HISTORY

On the morning of October 17, 1920, Mrs. Ruth Kolb and Miss Bel Ribble took attendance of six students. Enrollment increased to 35 the next year. In 1921, the school was officially established as the São Paulo Graded School -SPGS. Shortly after World War I, the American Chamber of Commerce and American companies in São Paulo envisioned a school that would prepare children for colleges and universities in the United States. It started in a two-room schoolhouse on Avenida São João, in the heart of downtown São Paulo.

14

A larger building was quickly constructed with Chamber of Commerce funds on Mackenzie College land at Rua “Piauhy” 36.

A mere 12 years later, the Brazilian industrial boom of the 1950s created pressure for an even bigger school. Large fundraising campaigns were held for construction of a new campus.

It was followed by an additional site for elementary students at Rua Itambé.

Finally, in August 1961 Graded moved to Avenida Giovanni Gronchi which, at that time, was considered rural and “sitting on a hilltop with forests and pastures and rock quarries all around.”

As the school continued to grow, the American Chamber of Commerce began a campaign to construct an even larger building. Head of School, Maurice Vernon Powell, “Tio Powell”, moved the school to the corner of Rua Coronel Oscar Porto, close to Avenida Paulista.

In 1979, Joy Pickering implemented the Montessori Program in the newly built Lower school campus.

The Lower School campus was inaugurated in 1977. The Montessori program that thrives today would be implemented a few years later.

OUR HISTORY

International Baccalaureate (IB) courses were introduced in 1985. Un Kyung Park earned Graded’s first International Baccalaureate Diploma in 1988.

The Big Four Tournament kicked off in the 1980s -- Graded, Escola Americana do Brasília, Escola Americana do Rio de Janeiro and Chapel still compete every year.

In 1991, Graded invested in technology. These are Apple II-GS computers. With the help of Universidade de São Paulo (USP), the Internet arrived on campus three years later.

As São Paulo expanded, Morumbi and Graded grew quickly with it.

In 2004, the Lemann-Tully Arts Center was completed. In the 10 years since, Graded’s artists, performers and musicians have developed and shared their talents in countless ways.

The first Peer Group Connection (PGC) class was established in1994. It has now been an integral part of our high school community for 20 years.

In 2015, the Centennial Campaign was launched to invest in Graded’s future.

Giving that Inspires Excellence From innovative projects that push student learning to world class professional development for teachers, Graded consistently offers top-notch, exciting, and relevant programs for its community. Last year’s donors helped create and sustain projects that make Graded learning experiences the best they can be.

COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY TEACHERS COLLEGE PARTNERSHIP

As part of a transformative initiative sponsored by the Graded Fund, the Lower School faculty had the unique opportunity to be students again, as they took part in a specialized, intensive, five-day training facilitated by the Reading and Writing Project (TCRWP) from Columbia University Teachers College. Graded is the first school in Latin America to participate in TCRWP, and can now boast a premier program that cultivates excellence in writing across the grades and disciplines. The school can now look forward to increased collaboration between teachers and Support Services faculty for improved differentiation, and teaching assistants can take a more active role during instructional time. With a global, aligned approach, students will not only have more consistent experiences in writing instruction, but their learning will also deepen as they move up through the grades.

“Graded is the first school in Latin America to host the reading and writing project from Columbia University Teacher College. We can now boast a premiere program that cultivates excellence in writing across all grades and disciplines.” Aaron Van Borek Lower School Academic Coach

GRADED VOICES

This past year, about 90 students from choir, orchestra and band, combined their talents and recorded the Graded’s Music Department’s first CD ever. The recordings were made in the school’s premier acoustic facilities and in the best recording studio in São Paulo: NaCena. The CD was produced by an American producer Daniel Bondazcuk from Nashville and the songs included some of the most famous Brazilian and American composers and arrangers - Tom Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Gershwin, Nailor Proveta, Edson Alves. In December, the Graded Voices performed at Instituto Tomie Ohtake, for over 500 parents, alumni and students. The concert was also recorded and is available on DVD.

INNOVATE 2015

This year Graded hosted Innovate 2015, a global conference that marks the school’s commitment to re-imagine a school that best serves and inspires students for tomorrow. Thanks to support from the Graded Fund, Innovate 2015 attracted 1,000 students and leaders in education from around the world. Featured speakers included some of the brightest minds in education: Suzie Boss, Joey Lee, Scott McLeod, Ewan McIntosh and Mike Anderson. They covered topics that included Project-Based Learning, Digital Leadership, Design Thinking, and Gamification. In a special session Start-Up Stay-Up, 25 students spent three days learning and developing a social business. Graded teachers facilitated over 30 workshops, and opened their classrooms to offer an immersive learning experience. Through Innovate 2015, Graded showcased its world class teachers and inspired educators and students to reach new levels of excellence.

“Speaking at Innovate 2015 was an awesome experience - I got to interact with so many people from around the globe.” Gian Salles Grade 7 student

Giving that Inspires Intercultural Competence What makes Graded special is its commitment to educating students who are balanced, responsible, curious, and reflective risk takers. This year, donors helped support projects that fostered diversity, initiated conversations on integrity, success and promoted community service learning. Participation in activities like these fosters honesty and a personal commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others.

DISTINGUISHED SPEAKER SERIES: MATT HOLM This past year Graded hosted Matt Holm, co-author and graphic designer of the immensely popular graphic novels, “Babymouse” and “Squish” series. He presented to grades K5 8 on Storytelling Through Graphics, expanded collaborative storytelling and visual literacy skills. Students were also lucky enough to name the 20th book in the Babymouse series: “Babymouse Goes for the Gold”.

“I liked that he said he might write a new book using our ideas... and then he did!” Isabella Albanese, 5th grade student

MUN

This past school year, over 50 Graded students welcomed 35 students from the International School of Curitiba and the Nido de Aguilas School in Santiago, Chile for the second annual South America Junior Model United Nations (SAJMUN). Through this program and conference, students address global issues in a real-world setting through researching, public speaking, debating, and writing. This type of work strengthens critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities as well as fosters diplomatic skills.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: PAULO ITO

Students were inspired by Paulo Ito, world-renowned artist who tackles social and political issues through graffiti, during his one-week residency in February 2015. Students were thrilled to work closely with an influential artist who is known for his work that often goes viral online, shaping dialogue on key issues of the day. During his visit to Graded, he taught High School art classes, and guided students through the re-painting of the student center. His visit encouraged students and teachers alike to rethink the role of art, space and politics, and the powerful impact one person can have on the world.

“I had never had the chance to get to know or work with street art before. This new experience introduced some other, more current styles of art and I had fun being able to leave our paintings on the school walls. Paulo Ito’s visit raised my consciousness of the art we can see in the streets; not to mention that I feel proud whenever I spot one of his art works while passing by.” Seulbi Lee 9 grade student th

“Working with Paulo Ito was amazing experience for me as an IB Art student. My project is based on current social issues, so I immeadiately identified with him.” Marina Cortés Calle 12th grade student 35

Giving that Empowers engaged, ethical Citizens Graded students value diversity both on campus and outside the school’s walls. By engaging in numerous activities that promote awareness of other ways of life, students gain valuable real world experience. Donors were essential in providing support for the scholarship program as well as other projects that brought new ideas, thinkers and leaders to campus. This type of support ensures that Graded continues to be a community focused on being inclusive and open to different perspectives.

GRADED SCHOLAR SUPPORT: INCREASING ACCESS

Thanks to ongoing support from the Lemann Foundation and Graded Fund, Graded provided scholarship support for three students as well as launched an Outreach Program for ten students to identify talented Brazilians for the Graded Scholar Program. Scholarship support includes tuition, tutoring, counseling, testing, home Internet connection, and post-graduation support. The Graded Scholar Program provides extraordinary opportunities for the participating students and the entire community as it inspires excellence, and fosters diversity and balance in our community.

“The Graded Scholar Program will have a transformative impact on the school and hopefully the country.” Roberto Sallouti ‘90 President of the Board, Parent

Giving that Empowers engaged, ethical Citizens

In March 2015, Léo Oliveira created a video from his Skidmore dorm room to thank the Graded community for their ongoing support and share the impact of his Graded experience in his life today.

“Graded evidently provides a fantastic education, but more than that, and what I think is key about the scholarship program is that, for students like me, it offers vision. Graded expanded my horizons and it showed me that my true limits were far from the ones that I had set for myself.” Léo Oliveira ‘15 Skidmore College Class of 2019
