abstract
The city is read in dimensions of space and time as a sequence of events, as a series of performances that compose the urban experience. Complicated in relation to its original model and contradictory, it operates under local and international conditions at the same time. The concept of the administrative, religious, economic and social center is no longer perceived as a spatial unity within the urban fabric. Modern needs are decentralizing the once fortified hill with the result that human activities are dispersed and expanded to a wider field. In the context of today’s global reality, the present lecture explores the conditions and mechanisms of the establishment of modern urban life. One of the topics to be discussed is whether and to what extent the particular conditions of the environment (climate, river, topography, green spaces, etc.) in which a society is born and develops, affect its characteristics, as well as all kinds of relationships that appear in it. At the same time, the object of study is the expression of the particular characteristics of a set in space. It reflects the specific needs of a society, the role and responsibility of the individual as a whole, the common set of ideologies and philosophies for life, the social structure and the social and economic relations that develop in its context. It is argued, that is, that the different aspects of a society are formed within the space in which it operates and are reflected in the particular space it produces. This relationship will be explored through the examination of three apparently similar cities, which, as will be revealed, the heterogeneous priorities of managing their natural and urban wealth, made them differ significantly.
