Blackhawk Brigade returns to Grafenwoehr Story by
Gerald Morgenstern Grafenwoehr. The Blackhawks have returned from their deployment to afghanistan. In a festive ceremony, the unit colors of the 172d Infantry Brigade were uncased on the parade field in front of the water Tower. The joy about the return of the approximately 4,000 Soldiers was accompanied by the mourning over the 10 fallen comrades. In June 2011, the unit colors were cased and now they are waving again in the Upper Palatinate sky. Flying the flags at half-mast symbolized the mourning of the fallen Soldiers. Civilian and military guests attended the ceremony. The festive uncasing of the colors marked the official return of the brigade from its deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom 11-12. Lt. General Mark P. Hertling, the commanding general of the US Army in Europe extended a “welcome home“ to the Blackhawk Soldiers stationed in Grafenwoehr, Schweinfurt and Bamberg and thanked them for their courage while deployed. The “Blackhawk Task Force“ was deployed to the Paktika and Nangahar provinces of Afghanistan for almost a year, explained Col. Edward T. Bohnemann, the commander of the 172d Infantry Brigade. “The Soldiers of the Black Falcons have fought a hard fight against the insurgents in the east of Afghanistan

Garrison protects nature and cultural assets Story by
Gerald Morgenstern GrAFenwöhr/VilsecK. “You can’t put the wheel of history into reverse but history must be preserved. The us Army is committed to preserving nature and cultural assets,“ said col. James e. saenz. The commander of the us Army Garrison Grafenwoehr presented a project of the environmental office at the former village of hopfenohe. Saenz welcomed the descendants of former Hopfenohe residents, mayors of the surrounding communities as well as representatives of the Federal Forest, the German Army and other government agencies at the site of the former village of Hopfenohe, directly located next to the European watershed. Manfred Rieck, the chief of the environmental office, explained that independent of local and legal regulations, the US Army has voluntarily comitted itself to protect nature and cultural assets. The Hopfenohe project was financed with $ 40.000 out of the environmental budget. Project officer Dr. Peter Fleischmann explained the expansion of the orchard which turned into an exciting journey into history. Nature conservation projects must abide by laws and regulations while allowing for realistic, military training scenarios. Starting in 2001, many kinds of fruit trees in the training area have been mapped. Since Hopfenohe is a place that can easily be reached, it was decided to start a fruit tree project in the former village. When digging the holes for the trees, old walls were found. When comparing old zoning maps, it was determined that they belong to house number 7, the guesthouse „Zum Schweden“ (At the Swede). Fleischmann explained the history of the house which can be traced back to 1762. The last owner was the Kohl family, whose descendants 6

attended the Hopfenohe ceremony. Josef Kohl’s father and the and the mother of Veronika Gredler and Heinrich Fick were born in the Kohl residence in Hopfenohe.Together, the cousins and the guests ventured on the history trail. One of the walls of “the Swede” was excavated and secured. During the process, the environmental office worked closely together with the German authorities, including the Federal Forest Office and the Office for Monument Protection. Signs in German and English inform about the history of the village and the house and provide information about the various kinds of fruit trees. Together, Veronika Gredler and Col. Saenz cut the ribbon to officially open the project site which is a part of the “Man - Culture - Nature“ initiative. In 2005, the US Amy already invested a large amount of money into the preservation of the church ruins, which

The fish farmers‘ village celebrates again 15th Kornthan Carp Parish Fair on October 13 and 14 Story by
Pia stevens All is still quiet in the small village of Kornthan near wiesau (tirschenreuth county). but that will soon be over when the fish farmers invite the public to their famous carp Parish Fair on October 13 and 14. For an entire weekend, the entire village will then turn into a huge fest ground to celebrate the fish and the long tradition of fish farming. Kornthan‘s unique feature is the large village pond. No other village in Old Bavaria has had such a large tradition of hundreds of years of fish farming. In the Middle Ages, the monks of the Cistercian monastery in Waldsassen built the large pond. The local farmers quickly noticed that growing carp is a very lucrative business and started building ponds themselves. At the beginning of the 16th century, they were finally able to buy the large pond and have jointly operated it ever since. The Kornthan citizens are proud of their rich history and rightfully so. They have been celebrating it now for 15 years with the so-called Kornthan Carp Parish Fair. Every year, up to 10,000 visitors crowd around the pond on a weekend in October and enjoy the special parish fair atmosphere with booths, stands and events – and. of course, with a large variety of fish specialties. This year, it takes place on October 13 and 14. Visitors can experience and enjoy the wide variety of carp, trout and other fish in the courtyards of the fish farmers Stock and Maierhöfer, in two fest tents and a fest hall as 12

well as at countless booths. Have you ever tried a carp goulash or a fish burger? Or how about a carp salad or carp fries? Of course, other regional specialties will also be available such as home-made cake or Zoigl. The fish harvesting at 2 p.m. is the highlight for the kids on both days. Equipped with rubber boots and nets, the young fishermen may catch their prey themselves. At the Grislhof farm of the Maierhöfer family, a pond will be drowned the same way it is done for the adult fishermen and the kids can give their best to catch the fish in the low water with their nets. But a lot more is offered at the Carp Parish Fair. Whether it is rides with a carriage or a motor boat, exhibitions of historic fishing equipment, or a helicopter ride. You will not be bored at Kornthan. In addition to the Carp Parish Fair, Tirschenreuth County will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a county fair this year. Many clubs, associ-
ations and government agencies will present themselves with a colorful variety of events. On Saturday, visitors can admire the large county fireworks display. Kornthan Carp Parish Fest and County Fair on October 13 and 14, 2012

The 29-year-old has been attracted to art and painting since her childhood. First attempts included the copying of comic figures. During the past four years, however, painting became more and more important to her. Wild wolves were created and
even the most famous vampire of all times – Count Dracula. On average, Marion needs about 15 hours for one of her paintings. If it is one of her dark pencil paintings, however, the work can take longer. Important are attention to detail and a quiet hand. “After finishing high school,I studied industrial engineering but my real passion since my childhood has been painting.I find the inspiration for my pieces of art through experiences I‘ve made and my emotions, my love for nature, especially for wolves, and my great love for music. When painting, songs by Bon Jovi, 30 Seconds to Mars,Matchbox Twenty,Elvis Pres-
ley, Michael Jackson,or Kevin Tarte cannot be missing. When listening to certain passages, pictures form in my head and are only waiting to be put on paper. The most important thing is that something unique, something extraordinary is being created – as long as it is not a still life,“ says Schmid. “Call of Freedom,“ “Heaven“ and “Hell, “Desire“ and “Ghost of the Night“ are some titles of her many
