2013 Youth Ski and Snowboard Program

By Lawrence Tindall, CYSS Sports & Fitness Director and Ski & Snowboard “Wonderful Wednesday” Organizer for seven seasons The long-running annual Youth Ski & Snowboard program known as Wonderful Wednesday (WW) concluded another safe and successful season. The program is a cooperative effort between community volunteer ski instructors, Garmisch Family and MWR, Garmisch Elementary-Middle School and the Edelweiss Lodge and Resort. It has been ongoing since the 1970s.

The WW program presents all of the students with participation awards because it’s about what they learned during their 10 week sessions. To name just a few: team building, building self-esteem & confidence, communication, being outside of their comfort zone and learning a lifelong skill. Injuries are inherent to winter sports training because any time there’s a combination of youth, downhill speed and beginning skiers and snowboarders with snow and ice, the chances for injuries are high. If you really think about the amount of time the participants were on the slopes, averaging about 30 hours each, and then multiply that by number of participants, it equals 2,940 individual hours (or 176,400 minutes) of potential for an injury.

small compilation of what the youth learned and provided a great family experience.

This was also a very challenging season due to the large groups of beginning skiers and snowboarders, ranging from 5 - 14 years old. This year 116 young community members took to the slopes to learn or improve their skills. This amounted to a great task completed by community volunteers getting everyone skiing or snowboarding.

This year there were no injuries, a testament to both students and instructors. Child, Youth & School Services thanks our community volunteer instructors and staff for a very safe 2013 season.

The Running of the Gates, an annual tradition where the students get to demonstrate their newfound abilities for their parents, classmates and instructors, was not a required event. However, most of the students participated and displayed what they had learned through their 10 sessions of instruction. The finale was a
