Army Community Service Again this year! ACS Operation Baby Shower To celebrate April being the Month of the Military Child, as well as Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Army Community Service Family Advocacy’ s New Parent Support Program invites you to our second Operation Baby Shower. This event combines fun with education and is tailored to expectant couples and families with children up to the age of three. Among fascinating presentations by experienced community speakers, participants will be eligible for exciting give-aways, including educational toys and books. Pre-registration is required. The event will be held at the Chapel’s conference room on April 14 from 10 a.m. - Noon. Free child care space is available at CDC. Please call 750.2684. We will have a pattern available, you may also bring an easy pattern with bodice and skirt that gives you opportunities to use different fabrics. You will learn how to make a mock-up in muslin to be certain the garment works and to avoid cutting up a precious piece of fabric. You will need: muslin (several yards), a combination of different

fabrics such as organdy with bark cloth, linen with denim, cotton with rayon, etc. (no wool, no velvet), matching threads, notions such as buttons, ribbons, rickrack, loopies, or cording. The red tulips are a lot of fun and easy to do. We will place them in a pillow or make a wall hanging (student’s choice). Leisure Travel Services Munich in the Third Reich Tour April 15 & 17 The Burke Center’s MVP tour with Paul Dutro. We start with a video presentation and a geographical and historical orientation in the PLTCE Auditorium (Building 253) on April 15 at 7 p.m. Two days later on Sunday April 17 we meet at the Garmisch Train Station just before 8 a.m. take a train to Munich, recreate the Bier Hall Putsch exactly as it happened in 1923, have lunch, visit the site of the Munich Accords (where Czechoslovakia ceased to be an independent unified country) and see some other places associated with the Nazi movement. The cost of this extravaganza is only $35! Limited to 35 participants. The last chance to pay is during the talk on Friday 15 April if it is not sold out already. Pre-payment is preferred. The next Third Reich Tour is June 1 - 2

Prague: Long Weekend in Bohemia April 22 - 25 May 20 - 22 Prague is often on the top of everyone’s list of places to visit in the old world. There will be an orientation tour of Prague – including how to get back to the hotel if your experience of the city is going to include any of the very late night spots! Saturday, join a daytime tour that includes a few more of touristic sights. For interested parties who want to see an opera, tickets can be arranged. Prague is a city “devoted to music” and there are at least three different MAJOR opera houses! Garmischerswe are extremely fortunate in being able to attend this most popular opera on Easter Sunday – La Boheme! Not to mention that we can see the other all-time favorite “Carmen” by Bizet on Saturday. Wagner’s monumental “Parsifal”- his most “Christian” opera - will be performed appropriately enough on Good Friday - (the third act of the opera actually takes place on Good Friday!) Additionally there are performances of Mozart’s Magic Flute and there is a ballet called Cinderella by Prokofiev!

Museums, shopping, churches, art, architecture, – it is all there in Prague. There will also be free time and a guided tour of the Franz Kafka museum. On the way we will stop in Plzen to sample some Plzener Urquel there at a terrific restaurant. We will leave from the Pete Burke Community Center at 9 a.m. Estimated arrival time back in Garmisch is about 8 p.m. on April 25. Cost is $370 for the April trip and $270 for the May trip. Minimum of 12 people are required maximum number is 14. Sign up now! Weekend Tour to Venice April 29 - May 1 We stay two nights in Vicenza, and head to Venice the next day. See some great art and architecture, pigeons in St. Mark’s Square, gondolas etc. Eat at some delicious Italian Restaurants. Return to Vicenza, the next day go on to Verona and tour the Romeo and Juliet city with the great Roman Arena – and a wonderful restaurant leaving Garmisch at 4:15 p.m. We arrive back in Garmisch at about 7 p.m. Cost is $290, Sign up Now! Next Venice weekend is June 10 - 12. Neuschwanstein Castle May 15 The most popular tourist attraction in Germany is Neuschwanstein Castle. As opposed to most of the tours that concentrate on the scandalous upbringing of Ludwig and his “tragedy,” Our tour with Paul Dutro is called Ludwig and Richard and focuses as much on the famous composer as well as the shy king. Essential to an understanding of the “Ludwig World” is an acquaintance with the world of nineteenth century German politics which will also be discussed! In addition to Neuschwanstein and a short stop for lunch in the castle town of Fuessen, there will also be a stop at the UNESCO designated World Heritage Site of the Wieskirche and also another at Ettal Monastery. Meet at the Burke Lodge at 8 a.m. and return by 6 p.m. Cost is $39. Don’t forget to bring along a passport (short crossing into Austria) some money for lunch and souvenirs. Ballet in Munich May 31 Munich happens to have one of the seven great opera houses in the world. Not to have seen it while you are here would be a big mistake! The dancers will be moving to pieces of music by Johan Sebastian Bach. Price is between 6 and 60 Euros. Cost is $12 for the bus ride to Munich leaves at 2:30 p.m.

UNESCO World Heritage Site Urbino May 27 - 30 You’ve probably never heard of Urbino! One big advantage to visiting Urbino is that mass tourism hasn’t arrived there yet and its delay has allowed Urbino to retain its charm as authentic Italy. What else makes Urbino the ultimate Renaissance jewel? Raphael was born there. So was Bramante--the guy who was mostly responsible for the construction of St. Peter’s Cathedral in Rome. Duke Federigo built a palace there. The Duchess presided over soirees that included the leading literary luminaries of the time. See the best mosaics in the world-Ravenna, another one of those places which is often overlooked by tourists. Then it is on to the UNESCO site of Urbino. We should be arriving just in time to grab an excellent dinner and take in the charm of the town. That evening we will have reservations for those who are interested in wonderful dining at the Tre Piante Restaurant. Explore the Ducal Palace the next day. You will be led through the many wonderful rooms in the palace, commonly regarded as one of the best structures from the Renaissance period. Then utilize free time to explore Urbino further on your own. On the way back to Garmisch we will gorge ourselves at a wonderful gourmet restaurant. We will leave at 4:15 p.m. Anticipated arrival time back in Garmisch is no later than 10 p.m. Cost is $475. A deposit of $150 will hold your place. Tour is limited to 16 people. Sign up by April 15.

For your child to participate in any USAG Grafenwoehr CYS Services program, he/she must be registered. We can help you accomplish this when you stop by a Parent Central office or visit us on the web. Please have all required documentation on hand, if you decide to visit one of our Parent Central locations. Appointments are available and recommended, but we do take walk-ins as well. USAG Grafenwoehr Parents can begin the registration process, pay their child care fees, re-register annually, and enroll in CYSS programs at our website. Parent Central Services will assign an initial username and password to you. After you sign in for the first time, you will be asked to personalize your account and you will have access to all our online services which include: bill payment, tax forms, receipts, class sign-ups and much more. Referral services are offered for Red Cross Babysitters, CYSSitters, German-American Sports Clubs and German Kindergarten. If you your child has been registered with CYS Services in another installation, you can ask that your child’s file to be transferred to CYS Services at USAG Grafenwoehr. USAG Grafenwoehr -- Child, Youth & School Services

Abigail Van Buren said, “If you want teens to keep their feet on the ground, put some responsibility on their shoulders.” USAG Grafenwoehr’s HIRED Apprenticeship Program has done just that, affording youth age 15-18 the opportunity to receive workforce experiences “on the job” in Department of Defense (DOD) and Family and Morale , Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) programs through a “mentor—mentee” relationship. This Child, Youth & School Services (CYSS) partnership initiative is designed to increase youth participation in workforce preparation and leadership activities. Since the introduction of HIRED in the summer of 2009, 59 youth have successfully completed apprenticeships in such areas as library science, public affairs, finance and child development. These apprentices commit to completing 180 workforce hours and approximately 9 hours of workshops within a 12 weeks term. They are also available when called upon to volunteer in their community. As the Work Force Preparation Specialist, I see these youth from the first interview to the end of term celebration, their growth and commitment to the program gives us great hope for the future. It is more than the cash award they receive at the completion of the term. The apprentices are more marketable. Numerous apprentices have gone on to obtain employment with AAFES and the Commissary. The Hired Program has also proved beneficial once they have graduated from high school. For example, former apprentice Brandon Pettitt, home schooled, graduated in 2010 and went on to pursue his post-secondary education. He applied for work study to help with his tuition and was selected to work in the universities library. Brandon’s work experience with the Rose Barracks Library through the HIRED Apprenticeship Program gave him the knowledge and understanding of library processes which put him and step above his peers.

Block Party Celebrates Military Children One of the special events during April is the CYSS Block Parties. The Block Parties will be held on Wednesday, April 20th, from 2:30 - 4:30 p.m. in three separate locations; Rose Barracks Little Mike Park, Grafenwoehr Parade Field, and the park in the Netzaberg housing area. “Children had a great time at the Block Party last year” said Amanda Guitreau, Lead Teacher at the Rose Barracks School Age Center. “The children are already talking about this year’s event.” In keeping with First Lady Michelle Obama’s Focus on Fitness Campaign, the Block Parties will feature fun fitness activities for children of all ages. Obstacle courses and treasure hunts are among some of the most popular activities. Prizes and medals will be provided to all participants.

Parent & Outreach Services Spring Activities

CYSS Parent & Outreach Services offers a variety of special activities and events for Families. For our spring schedule, we offer the Kids on Site program, AFC Special Openings, Parent’s Day and Night Out, Month of the Military Child Kinderfest and the Mom Prom. Kids on Site is a great program offered on both sides of the Garrison. Kids on Site is an alternative to center-based childcare, offering care at or near other FMWR facilities. On Main Post, the care is provided on site at the Physical Fitness Center, Building 170. In Rose Barracks the care is provided at Building 224, a quick 2 minute drive away from the Rose Barracks Fitness Center. Drop off the children and go work out! We offer free childcare during FRG meetings. We also offer Parent’ s Night Out on two Friday evenings each month, rotating between Rose Barracks and Netzaberg CYSS facilities. We also provide childcare on one Saturday each month. Some of the openings are restricted to Families with a deployed Soldier, so check with our Parent Central Services office for the current schedule of special openings. Kinderfest will be held this year on April 30 at the Memorial Fitness Center. It is the capstone event for the Month of the Military Child. CYSS will also host a “Mom Prom” in May; a great opportunity for son’s to take their Mom out for an evening of dining and dancing. Main Post and Netzaberg Child Development Centers The Main Post Child Development Center is offering a wide variety of exciting and entertaining activities during the spring and summer. During Month of the Military Child , we have a packed month of both fun and learning opportunities for your child with special visits from the Fire Department, Library, MPs Canine Unit, STRYKERS, Dental Clinic, Medics and the German Polizei. A Parent Appreciation BBQ, Multicultural Learning Events and Special Dress Up Days will also take place throughout the month. Don’t miss your opportunity to attend a Parent workshop entitled “Infant Baby Massage.” We are partnering with SKIES Unlimited to offer Child Gymnastics. This program is geared for Preschool and Pre Kindergarten with the target ages being 4-5 years old. Classes will be held once a week at the Main Post Field House. Children will start their morning as usual at Main Post CDC, and our staff will accompany the children to and from the Field House for their 45 minute class. Are you looking at options for your children for summer 2011? Interested in educational and social programs for the summer after the academic year ends on 14 June? Summer programming gets kicked off on Monday, June 20 at the Child Development Centers as the Department of Defense schools bring to close another successful year for children. We strive hard to offer developmentally appropriate activities and summer trips to help children remain on routine but at the same time learn about the culture in which they live in.

Child, Youth & School Services introduced “Part Time” fees into their programming this year. This allows you a total of 25 hours per week from 8 a.m. -1 p.m.. Monday through Friday at CDC. Youth Program Summer Highlights Did you know that the Youth Centers in the Grafenwoehr military community will be traveling to many exciting European destinations in the summer? In addition to the trips, youth will have the opportunity to go horse-back riding, skating, biking and hiking. Not interested yet? Check out our trip schedule! April 5 & 26, May 3 & 17, June 7 & 21 - 9-11 a.m. April 6 & 27, May 4 & 18, June 1 & 15 - 6 - 8 p.m. Learn the Art of French Beaded Flowers. The evolution of the beaded flower is not well documented, but seems to back to the 18th Century. The techniques were passed through families, each generation teaching the next. The French beaded flower technique is only one of several, and it is not exclusively French, but is believed to have been born in France and in Italy, enjoying great popularity throughout Europe for centuries. Each class will cost $25 or JOIN the Flower of the Month Club and pay a one-time fee of $25 and $5 -$8 per month for your kit.

1ST ICT Co Crowned Unit Level Basketball Champions by Mike Bradfish The 2010/11 unit level basketball season started way back in November and was capped off with the USAG Grafenwoehr unit level championship 22-24 February. There were seven teams that participated during the league and four of them battled it out for the right to be called champion. 1ST ICT CO came into the championship undefeated in the regular season and looked forward to continuing their winning ways. On the first night of competition there were 2 games 7ANCOA VS HHC 18 CSSB and 1ST ICT CO VS HHD 709TH MP BN. In the first game 7ANCOA found themselves down 22 – 27 at halftime but they regrouped and pulled out the win over HHC 18 CSSB 53-44. In the second game 1ST ICT CO was able to continue their winning ways easily beating HHD 709TH MP BN 66-49. Leading all scorers for the night was Sean Johnson from 1ST ICT CO with 20 points. There were 2 games on the second night. In the first game HHC 18 CSSB VS HHD 709TH MP BN the stakes were high since the loser would be sent home and the winner would get at least one more shot at the crown. At half time the score was tied at 25-25 and this game would go down to the wire eventually sending the game in to overtime. In the final seconds of the overtime period Johnathan Pedro would score the winning basket sealing the victory for 709TH 65-63. The second game of the night ended with another win for the 1ST ICT CO. Leading all scorers for a second night was Sean Johnson from 1ST ICT CO with 29 points. On the third and final night of the championships 7ANCOA and HHD 709TH MP BN would face off for the right to take on 1ST ICT CO for the championship. It would prove to be a long night for one of these two teams and 709TH would not be denied the opportunity they beat 7ANCOA 71-55 and moved on to meet the undefeated 1ST ICT CO in the championship game. After a slow start 1ST ICT would prove to be too much for 709TH to handle and they were beaten 86-50. With this win 1ST ICT CO continued their winning ways and stayed undefeated for the entire 2010/11 unit level season and the championships. Leading all scorers for a third night in a row was Sean Johnson from 1ST ICT CO with 35 points. 1ST ICT CO will move on to represent USAG Grafenwoehr at the Army Europe championship 11-13 March in Bamberg.

Grafenwoehr Weight Loss Challenge Want to lose weight the slow and TORTUROUS but rewarding way? That is what the Grafenwoehr weight loss challenge flyer touts. Fad diets are out and healthy eating and exercise are in! The first weight loss challenge kicked off in October with Sarah Brown leading 17 participants to lose over 97 lbs and 117 inches in 4 weeks. “The results were truly astounding. It’s amazing how much stronger a group can be than an individual” Brown said. The group came together for weekly weigh-ins and meetings to share recipes, fitness tips and support. Maria Young, the winner of the first challenge, lost 17 lbs and not only has gone on to lose 10 more lbs, but is also training for her first ½ marathon. The rules are simple: eat less and move more. Participants are given a set calorie count based on their height, weight, bodyfat and activity level. They are also encouraged to exercise, many of whom attend Sarah’s Sculpt & Burn class 3 times a week. Weekly weigh-ins and food journals are mandatory. The second challenge went through the month of December to equal success! Shawn Marsteller did not let Christmas, New Year’s, or a trip to the Canary Islands stop her from losing 13 lbs in 6 weeks to become the 2nd winner of the Grafenwoehr weight loss challenge. “I am so proud of not only the winners, but every participant in the program. They work hard and encourage each other. I’m honored to know each one of them and to be a part of their success” Brown said. Grieving the Loss of a Pregnancy or Infant by Nicole Ceterski, LCSW - ACS Hohenfels New Parent Support Program The loss of a child is one of the most painful events a person could experience, and one for which you can never fully prepare. Whether it is due to miscarriage, stillbirth, sudden and unexpected infant death, health problems, or an accident, each loss impacts the lives of the mother, father, family members and friends for weeks, months, and years. Unfortunately, the death of a fetus or child occurs more commonly than often acknowledged. According for the Centers for Disease Control, approximately 16 percent of all pregnancies end in miscarriage or stillbirth, and some sources suggest the occurrence is as high as 1 in 4. The rate of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome has decreased significantly in the past couple of decades, but each year in the United States an alarming 4,500 infants die suddenly from no apparent cause. Although a woman may physically recover from a miscarriage or stillbirth quickly, the psychological recovery from losing a child can take much longer. Men also experience strong emotions after the loss of a pregnancy or newborn. The 5 Stages of Grief model identifies five phases of the grieving process. They include 1) Denial – “This can’t really be happening to me”, usually lasting temporarily; 2) Anger – “Why me?” “This isn’t fair,” “Who’s to blame?” 3) Bargaining – “I’ll do anything to make it better” 4) Depression – “I miss my baby, why should I go on,” “I’m so sad, I don’t want to do anything” 5) Acceptance – “It’s going to be okay.” These stages of grief are not necessarily sequential, as some individuals will enter in and out of the stages throughout the healing process. Losing a child impacts the relationship between a mother and a father. Some couples find ways to grieve together and support one another, finding strength in their shared loss. Others find themselves experiencing

their grief differently, entering different stages at different times. For example, some mothers may wonder why their partners do not cry over the loss, while some fathers may feel that they need to remain strong for their loved ones. This can lead to tension and resentment in the relationship even though both parents may be experiencing intense grief. It is important for both mother and father to be able to find a safe place to be able to express their feelings honestly and openly, when they are ready. Talking with close friends, family, your partner, health care professionals, religious leaders, or support groups is often a step to begin the healing process. For individuals who have not experienced such a loss, it is often difficult to empathize with the intense emotions involved. While it is a common response to try to shy away from such topics, doing so can often make a grieving parent feel isolated. Sometimes it is best to follow the mother and father’s leads, acknowledging their loss and offering time to listen or a shoulder to cry on. Tour the largest, most expensive and final castle of Ludwig II. Outdoor Recreation Paintball Paintball is back! Field fee is $10, paintball marker rental is $10, paint is $55/case (2000 rounds), or $35/half-case (1000 rounds). If you bring your own paintball marker, it must be in compliance with German law. Dress in appropriate clothing, camouflage and BDU’s are prohibited. Beginners kayaking course, May 11-14 The first trip out on the water for the season is beginner kayakers. Learn the rivers in the area, paddling and basic skills. Outdoor Recreation has all the equipment you need, transportation and several experienced instructors. The location will be determined depending on water levels. Cost: $139, includes: Rental equipment, kayaking course and transportation not including the camping fees. Rafting and Canyoning, June 11 Head down to Lenggries, Germany for a weekend on the water. This time it is for one overnight and two days of adventure on the river and canyons. Also enjoy an extreme water park that is way too much fun to miss! This trip includes rafting and canyoning, but other activities like skydiving, paragliding, downhill mountain biking and much more are available at additional charges. Depart ODR, Building H15 at 4:30 a.m. on June 11. Deadline to register is May 27. Cost: $219, includes: Transportation and rafting and canyoning equipment. Need to bring:

High ropes course in Lenggries, June 25 The high ropes course is a fun and challenging experience for the whole family. Using harnesses, helmets, cables, ropes and wooden beams strung 20 to 50 feet high among trees or poles, teams will explore risk-taking, trust and coaching. Whether you’re climbing, encouraging others or on belay each moment is full of adventure and discovery. Other attractions include a 15 meter high, two person swing and zip lining. Cost: $45, includes: Transportation only. Course tickets range from 20-40 euro. Summer Equipment Rentals ODR has all of the outdoor equipment to meet your summertime needs. If you’re looking to do a camping trip, stop by to check out our tents, sleeping bags, stoves and coolers. We also rent canoes, kayaks and mountain bikes. Ask us about our party equipment. USAG Hohenfels Golf Tournaments USAG Hohenfels Sports & Fitness will conduct four golf tournaments during the 2011 season. The tournaments on May 6 and June 3 will be played at the Habsberg Golf Club. The Tournaments on August 12 and September 9 will be played at the Hilzhofen Golf Club. Teams will consist of four players and the registration fee will vary based on tournament location. Space will be limited.
