HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

“Honoring our heritage. Building our future.” Visit our special display at the library celebrating Hispanic and Latino American culture, heritage and contributions. Read a book or watch a film this month to expand your knowledge about Hispanics and Latinos who have enriched our nation’s history. Take our simple quiz about famous American personalities and you can enter the drawing to win a prize!

BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP SEPTEMBER 26, 7 P.M.

September’s book is “Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand” by Helen Simonson. Meet Major Pettigrew: wry, courtly, opinionated and completely endearing. He leads a quiet life, valuing the proper things that Englishmen have lived by for generations, until his brother’s death sparks an unexpected friendship with the Pakistani shopkeeper from the village. Books and audiobooks are available from the library.

DEFEND THE FIRST AMENDMENT... READ A BANNED OR CHALLENGED BOOK

Catcher in the Rye...To Kill a Mockingbird...The Great Gatsby... What’s your favorite book? Chances are good that someone has challenged it or tried to ban it. Every year, there are hundreds of attempts by individuals or groups to remove books from schools and libraries. The freedom to read is essential to our democracy, and reading is among our greatest freedoms. The books featured on our September display have all been targeted for removal in libraries or schools for various reasons. You’ll be surprised at many of the titles. Celebrate YOUR freedom to read and your right to choose your book during Banned Books Week.

Day one, we hike through the Reintal Valley and stay at the Reintalangerhuette, one of the most famous and colorful huts in the Alps.
