ARMY LIBRARY WORLD WAR I PROJECT

2017 marks the centennial of the United States of America entering WWI. To commemorate this momentous occasion, the Army MWR Library has teamed up with partners to create the Remember WWI project. The project will run now through December 2018. The core of the project is located at www.rememberww1.com and features an online book club, short videos, lectures and information about the war, social customs and occurrences at the time. Visit the library or website for more information about how you can join this ongoing observance of the 100th anniversary of WWI.

WORLD WAR I DAYS OF TRIVIA

Daily over the month of August Consider yourself a history buff? Test your WWI knowledge at the library with our daily “walk-in” trivia.

ROUTE 1 READS

Travel 2,369 miles on Route 1, from Ft. Kent, Maine to Key West, Florida covering 15 states & the District of Columbia, without taking a single footstep. Explore the locale along Route 1 at home or on the road through selected books available at the library.

PAPERBACK CALL OUT

Are foreign language paperbacks cluttering up your book shelves? Donate them to the Library! They will be passed on to the European Rotational Forces including U.S., NATO & partner-nation forces who rotate through Grafenwoehr. The “Free Library” has a wealth of English titles, but little in other languages. Help these soldiers and clear your clutter.

MUNICH: THE DARK TOUR AUGUST 25 & 27

PRAGUE*

AUGUST 4-6 Spared extensive bombing damage in WWII, Prague still has an authentic feel to its wonderful architecture. The capital of Bohemia has the famous Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, the beautiful St. Vitus Cathedral in the Old Castle, the Franz Kafka Museum and a wonderful tradition of music-making by “Bohemians” of all stripes. Transportation, accommodation and breakfast included. Price for 2 nights: $290/person, $45/single supplement per night, $145/child

TRIP TO PASSAU AUGUST 19

Passau is the town where three rivers come together and is served by the shipping traffic that plies the Danube. There is a “seaport” feel to things and is a fantastic one-day getaway! First, experience a cathedral concert featuring the world’s largest church organ. After lunch, climb to the fortress to see the permanent exhibitions “Salt” and “Life in the Middle Ages.” Finish the trip on one of the cruise ships down the river before returning. Transportation and church entrance included. Price: $45/person, $22/child under 12

DSN 440-2638 | CIV 08821-750-2638

This is the most ambitious introduction to the dark period of Munich’s history offered by any tour company! The tour starts with a 2½ hour video and lecture about the rise of the Third Reich under Adolf Hitler in the city of Munich. On the following Sunday, take the train to Munich and walk the route of the “Bier Hall Putsch” and see sites associated with this darkest period of Munich’s history. Price: $45/adult

THE GORGE AND POOL TOUR AUGUST 26

One of the most beautiful natural sights in GarmischPartenkirchen is the Partnach Gorge. It is beautiful in every season and serves as our “mini Grand Canyon” without quite the influx of visitors! The Alpspitze Wellenbad is the town’s largest pool, and the best spa in the local area. There are three saunas, a steam bath, Jacuzzis, warm pools, cold pools, diving pools, an Olympic pool, salt pools, salt treatments, eating and drinking areas, a bar, numerous lounging areas, a “textile free area” and just about everything you might want to experience during the most relaxing day of your life. This 7 hour tour includes the walking tour and entrance to the pool and the gorge. Price: Gorge and Pool $30/ person; Pool alone $26/person; Gorge alone $10/person; Children under 12 are ½ price
