Many best sellers and award winning books of 2016 tell stories and honor achievements of African Americans. “Hidden Figures” by Margot Lee Shetterly, recently made into a motion picture, is about the black female mathematicians who worked at NASA as “human computers” helping to put a man on the moon. Paul Beatty became the first American novelist to win the Man Booker Prize with his novel “The Sellout.” “The Underground Railway” by Colson Whitehead took the National Book Award top honors. On the lighter side, comedian, blogger, activist and pop-culture critic Luvvie Ajayi of LuvvNation calls out bad behavior and challenges us to do better with humor and wit in her new book “I’m Judging You: the do-better manual.” Check out these and many more items this month from the library’s special display for African American History month.

MARCH 21, 7 P.M. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie Budding cartoonist Junior leaves his school on the Spokane Indian Reservation to attend an all-white school just outside the reservation where the only other Indian is the school mascot. Join the discussion of this deceptively simple 2007 National Book Award winner for young readers.
MARCH 27, 7 P.M. Meet the author of the series “The Hangman’s Daughter.” Oliver Poetzsch will be reading from the first book of his popular series that takes place in 1639 in the village of Schongau. He’ll also bring some of the potions referenced in the story, and as a special treat for the audience, he will be accompanied by musicians playing tunes of the time. If you haven’t read the book yet, there are several copies available through the library. Feel free to bring your own copy to have it signed in person. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear from a descendent of the Kuisls, one of Bavaria’s leading executioner families.

LEISURE TRAVEL NUREMBERG GETAWAY
FEBRUARY 3-5 | MARCH 17-19 Nuremberg is a perfect weekend away from Garmisch: fairly close, still in Bavaria, inexpensive by comparison with many other places and has many varied attractions. Kaiserburg, the main castle of the Holy Roman Empire, sits on top of the central hill within the city walls. Richard Wagner chose this city as the scene for his operatic drama “The Mastersingers of Nuremberg.” Adolf Hitler appreciated the historic credentials and made it the background for his largest propaganda rallies during the Third Reich. The allies appreciated the same historical value as the perfect venue to press charges against some of those same personages at the famous “Nuremberg Trials” following World War II. The Nuremberg Documentation Center is one of the most thorough museums on the history of the Nazis. From the development of arts and clothing to medicine and instruments, the German National Museum offers a wide variety of exhibits on the history of the German-speaking region. Hotel accommodations, breakfast and transportation included. Price: $250/adult; Single supplement $45/night; $125/child
WEEKEND IN PRAGUE* MARCH 3-5
Spared extensive bombing damage in WWII, Prague still has an authentically historic feel to its beautiful architecture. The capital of Bohemia has the famous Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, St. Vitus Cathedral in the Old Castle and a wonderful tradition of music by “Bohemians” of all stripes. Also included is a tour of the Franz Kafka Museum, as well as Alfons Mucha’s cycle of 20 Paintings known as “The Slav Epic.” Hotel accommodations, breakfast and transportation included. Price: $290/adult; Single supplement $45/night; $145/child
