BRAIN CANDY

BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP

After all the holiday feasting, the start of the New Year is a great time to give your mind something fresh to chew on. Our January display will whet your appetite for finding out more about the most mysterious organ of all – the human brain. Psychologists analyze it, scientists investigate it, neurosurgeons operate on it, behaviorists seek to understand it, and we all need and use it every day. Sample some books on the latest research, trends and theories of the human mind or test your wits with some fun brain teasers. Each week we’ll have a new puzzle to challenge your mental powers. Complete the puzzle for a chance to win a great prize!

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

PRESCHOOL & TODDLER STORY TIME

Martin Luther King, Jr. was an influential leader of the civil rights movement during the 1960s. He was instrumental in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He was an advocate of non-violent protest and became the youngest man to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Martin Luther King Day also promotes equal rights for all Americans, regardless of their background. The library recognizes the accomplishments of this important civil rights leader during the month of January with a special display. Visit the library to learn more about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy.

MUNICH: THE DARK TOUR

JANUARY 8 (PART ONE) JANUARY 10 (PART TWO)

This is the most ambitious and extraordinary introduction to the dark period of Munich’s history offered by any tour company! The complete tour starts on Friday evening in the assembly room of Building 253 with a two and half hour video and lecture about the rise of the Third Reich under Adolf Hitler in the city of Munich. On the following Sunday we take the train to Munich and walk the route of the “Bier Hall Putsch” and see nearly everything associated with this darkest period of Munich’s history. Price: $45 per adult. Not appropriate for children under the age of 15.

PARTNACH GORGE & POOL TRIP JANUARY 9

One of the most beautiful natural sights in Garmisch Partenkirchen is the Partnach Gorge. It is beautiful in every season and serves as our “Mini Grand Canyon” without quite the influx of visitors! The Alpspitz Wellenbad is the town’s largest pool and the best spa in the local area. There are three saunas, a steam bath, jacuzzis, warm pools, cold pools, diving pools, an Olympic pool, salt pools, salt treatments, eating and drinking areas, a bar, numerous lounging areas and just about everything you might want to experience during the most relaxing day of your life. (Parts of the spa area are “textile free”). This 7 hour tour on a Saturday afternoon includes the walking tour and entrance to the gorge, pool and sauna areas of the SPA. It is also possible to do only the walk through the gorge or only the pool, but buying the combination results in $4 saved! Price: $24 Wellenbad; $10 Gorge; $28 Gorge and Wellenbad.

PRAGUE

JANUARY 15-18 Spared extensive bombing damage in WWII, Prague still has an authentic feel to its wonderful architecture. The capital of Bohemia has the famous Charles Bridge, and Old Town Square, the beautiful St. Vitus Cathedral and the Old Castle and a wonderful tradition of music-making by “Bohemians” of all stripes. We usually attend an opera in one of Prague’s three opera houses where the performances are inexpensive and subtitled in English. This time the opera is Salome - the shocker by Richard Strauss! Paul gives an excellent tour of the Franz Kafka Museum and the Alfons Mucha “Slav Epic” when there is sufficient time. And there is a reputation for the quality of Czech beer as well! On the return trip there is a brief stop for lunch in Pilsen, the city that provides the name for “pils” style beers. Price: $390 per adult, $195 per child (5-12).
