SUMMER READING FUN FOR ALL AGES
Excitement and fun are in store for those who take part in the Garmisch Library Summer Reading Program. During the months of June and July, the library will host a variety of free activities for children of all ages to encourage and support a love of reading. Dash on over to the library for more details.
READ FOR THE WIN: OLYMPIC CHALLENGE GRADES K-5
JUNE 22 & 29 | JULY 6 & 13, 10:30 A.M.
On Your Mark, Get Set, READ! Our Summer Reading Program for children entering grades K-5 is designed to inspire readers to aim for peak performance and avoid “summer slide”, or diminished reading skills. We’ll have plenty of fun activities, crafts and storytimes that reflect our Olympics and sports theme. The program is simple: you read books and earn prizes! Registration is required and begins Monday, June 13. Children grades 5 and below must be accompanied by a caregiver.
READ TO ME: PRESCHOOL STORY TIME JUNE 23 & 30 | JULY 7 &14,10:30 A.M.
This program for pre-readers ages 5 and under features four weekly read aloud storytimes and activities. Children keep track of the time a parent, friend or older sibling reads to them. Get the whole family involved and read together this summer. Registration is required and begins Monday, June 13.

We’ll meet two times for a short discussion of a book and then watch the filmed version. Books will be available from the Library. Pick up the first book “Flipped” by Wendelin Van Draanen when you register by June 21. Keep track of all the time you read and you might just win a prize to boot!
BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP JULY 25, 7 P.M.
In keeping with our summer Olympic theme, July’s book club book will be “The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and their epic quest for gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics” by Daniel James Brown. The book tells the story of the University of Washington eight-oar crew and their pursuit of Olympic gold in 1936. Books and audiobooks are available from the library.

PARTNACH GORGE & ALPSPITZ WELLENBAD JUNE 4 One of the most beautiful natural sights in Garmisch-Partenkirchen is the Partnach Gorge. The Alpspitz Wellenbad is the town’s largest pool, and the best spa in the local area. This seven-hour tour includes the walking tour and entrance price to the spa. Price: Gorge and Wellenbad $30; Wellenbad $26; Gorge $10 (Children under 12 are half price).
SHAKESPEARE MARATHON: HAMLET JUNE 6 We will watch the excellent performance of the play with Mel Gibson, Glenn Close and Alan Bates. Death, madness, philosophy, evil, religion, renaissance perspective will all be discussed. Martin Luther, Rene Descartes, Sigmund Freud, Hannah Arendt and W.H. Auden will all be allowed their opinions. Intellectual roller coaster rides for all!

NEUSCHWANSTEIN CASTLE JUNE 18 This tour focuses as much on the famous composer as well as the shy king. In addition to Neuschwanstein and a short stop for lunch in the castle town of Fuessen, there will also be a short stop at the UNESCO designated World Heritage Site of the Wieskirche and also Ettal Monastery.
CONQUER THE ZUGSPITZ OVERNIGHT HIKE JUNE 18-19 The Zugspitze has two glaciers 3600 ft. cliffs on three sides, divides Germany and Austria and has the Partnach and Hoellental gorges. We will hike 6-8 hours through the Reintal valley and stay at the Reintalangerhuette. We will continue up steeper slopes to the Zugspitzplatt. From there, those who want
